Grammy-winning, guitar-slinging blues rocker Warren Haynes is back, and he’s brought the spirit of his heroes along for the ride. Million Voices Whisper, Haynes’ first solo album in almost a decade, captures both his blues rock roots and his drive to explore fresh sounds with an all-star cast of guests. A legendary blues rock act, Haynes is celebrated for his iconic work with Gov’t Mule and the Allman Brothers Band, in addition to his equally commendable solo output. With a decades-long career, Haynes’ music combines emotional depth, brilliant songwriting and genre-crossing artistry, solidifying his place as a leading force in American rock and blues. With a superb band—John Medeski on keys, Terence Higgins on drums, and Kevin Scott on bass—Haynes crafts an 11-track set that balances blues, rock and funk with the warmth of soul. Haynes is also joined by Derek Trucks, Lukas Nelson, and Jamey Johnson on several tracks, adding a familiar depth and strength to the music. The record opens with “These Changes”. Co-written with Derek Trucks, it’s a breezy, gentle track that harkens back to the duo’s tenure with the Allman Brothers, complete with great organ work and a simply gorgeous lead guitar duel. The horn-fueled “Go Down Swinging” is a soul-oriented piece that is sure to keep things interesting, while the slow-burning “This Life As We Know It” impresses for its joyous catchiness and sunny feel-good vibes. Featuring Lukas Nelson and Jamey Johnson, “Day Of Reckoning” is a country-tinged blues rocker with an extraordinarily catchy chorus and more superb guitar work. It’s the album’s finest moment and certainly one of the best in Haynes’ solo career. Once again featuring Trucks, there’s also an emotionally charged ballad on offer with “Real, Real Love,” which Haynes finished in tribute to his former bandmate and close friend Gregg Allman. It’s a truly beautiful and heartfelt piece whose emotional weight is certain to touch any listener who still has a soul.
Finally, the funky, groove-heavy numbers “Terrified” and “Hall Of Future Saints”, with their tasteful dynamics and blazing guitar work, conclude the record on the strongest of notes. The album has Haynes at his finest, blending a rich array of styles from country-tinged blues rock to poignant ballads, with touches of funk, soul and R&B. Much of the record’s strength lies in its versatility, with each track offering something unique yet unmistakably Haynes. On top of that, the guitarist remains a stellar songwriter, which results in compositions that are textured and elaborate as they are moving. In short, Million Voices Whisper is an essential addition to Warren Haynes’ storied catalog, and proves once again that his voice in blues rock remains as vital and heartfelt as ever.

Samuel Moore (born July 17, 1939), who performs and records as Ironing Board Sam, is an American electric blues keyboardist, singer and songwriter, who has released a small number of singles and albums. His musical career, despite several low points, has spanned over fifty years, and he released a new album in 2012. "I'll tell you one thing, it's the blues," he stated. "That's why I look like a blues man now."
One commentator, describing Ironing Board Sam's 1996 album, Human Touch, noted that he "has a surprisingly smooth and effective croon and his piano playing, while subdued, is still remarkable." Moore was born in Rock Hill, South Carolina, United States. He was the son of a sharecropper and his mother died when he was around three years old. In his teens, Moore learned to play the pump organ from his stepmother and would cut lawns to make extra money, often leaving enough time to play his customers’ pianos. While concentrating initially on boogie-woogie and gospel music, he learned the electronic organ before graduating to playing the blues in Miami, Florida. After relocating to Memphis, Tennessee, in 1959, he formed a band and got his stage name from his practice of strapping his legless keyboard to an ironing board for performances. He disliked his stage name, but he later turned it to an advantage by giving away ironing boards at some of his concerts. In 1962, he was backed by a band containing the young Jimi Hendrix. He moved around the United States trying to get a recording contract, eventually issuing a handful of singles for Atlantic, Styletone and Holiday Inn in the late 1960s and early 1970s. In the 1960s, he ended up in Nashville, playing in Club Del Morocco. His trio was playing in the upstairs level of the club while Jimi Hendrix was playing below. Ironing Board Sam recalls, “When Jimi got done with his gig, he'd come up and play with me. Other musicians would come in to hear what we were doing. We'd be playing all night.” He also performed on Night Train in the mid-1960s.The show ran from 1963 to 1966 and defined “Nashville’s golden age of rhythm & blues.”For fans of the music program, Ironing Board Sam was a “superstar.” In the weeks leading up to a 1988 Night Train reunion, fellow musician Frank Howard described Ironing Board Sam’s Nashville legacy to The Tennessean, stating, “Ironing Board Sam lives in New Orleans, but everybody in this town is crazy about him.”
His performing technique was unusual, and he developed an eccentric persona in several directions. He invented a "button keyboard", which had a regular keyboard arrangement underneath which were fitted guitar strings. Rudimentary electronics gave him a three-pronged sound, which he used primarily when billed as the "Eighth Wonder of the World" while performing as a duo with the drummer Kerry Brown. In 1978, his intention to perform in a hot air balloon was cancelled because of adverse weather. At the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival a year later he played in a 1,500-gallon tank filled with water. By 1982, when he had moved back to New Orleans, he had developed the idea of performing as a "human jukebox", playing only when people inserted coins into his jukebox-styled costume. He worked in the Latin Quarter and got some club work after an appearance on the television program Real People. In the late 1980s he was accompanied by a toy monkey, known as Little George, that was rigged to play in synchronization with a drum machine. His more recent live sets have featured a mix of blues and jazz.In 1990, Ironing Board Sam toured Europe. His debut album, Human Touch, was released in 1996.He joined the Music Maker Relief Foundation in 2010 and moved to Chapel Hill, North Carolina. He was provided with new musical equipment, recorded a new album and played at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival in April 2012.In late 2012 and 2013, Ironing Board Sam played a series of concerts across North Carolina. He performed at the Steel City Blues Festival in March 2014.He returned to the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival in April 2014.In 2015, Ironing Board Sam starred in a series of advertisements for Faultless Starch. In July 2015, Ironing Board Sam was on the same bill as Boo Hanks and Lightnin' Wells at a concert in the Sarah P. Duke Gardens, Duke University, Durham, North Carolina.

11. Damn That Rock & Roll - 6:07
12. When I'm Gone (Tribal) - 3:32
13. The Whiskey Song - 2:15

Together since 1981, Southern New England’s Idlewilde knows its way around the blues. Though I’m aware they’re a group of top-shelf musicians with good day jobs, if I hadn’t known otherwise before being handed this CD, I’d’ve pegged these guys as full-time blues cats. 90 Proof is a fun, diverse collection of rock and blues songs that, after just a few listens, quickly became an old friend (as a blues album should). Featuring Dale Binsberger (bass, vocals), Jon Gould (lead guitar, vocals), Ryan Snyder (drums, vocals), Phil Spillane (guitar, harmonica, vocals), and Denny Hartzell (“all things keys”), Idlewilde delivers grit and growl that lets you know these guys are blues veterans.
I’m a big fan of the bit-by-bit album opening, and Idlewilde leads with instrumental “Bodeca,” whose sparse intro gives way to blistering guitars, a pulsing, catchy rhythm, and playful blues organ. “Red Clay” is strung-out, soulful, growling-vocalled, classic blues. It’s followed by mid-tempo yet raucous “When I’m Gone.” “Trouble,” which features a truly gravelly growl and harmonica opening, settles into a groove that recalls a bit of “Cheap Sunglasses”-era ZZ Top. And in that vein, the album continues, a club-rocking mix of blues and blues rock that I’m sure translates well to live performance and produces a rousingly fun night for local clubgoers and is well-represented throughout this disc.
There are a few other songs well worth mentioning in this collection. Musicians, for example, are likely to most appreciate the energetic “Telecaster,” an ode to a bluesman’s beloved axe.Perhaps the most soulful blues song on the disc is “A Darker Shade of Blue.” You may find yourself listening to that one with your eyes closed and your head swaying. My favorite song on the album is probably “Damn That Rock & Roll” because it’s just so blue. Great organ opening combined with soulful harmonica, a blue beat, and anguished, all building to climax ever-so-slowly. It’s a smoky barroom-flavored, cascading, classic soulful blues number. And the second of the two “bonus tracks” that close the disc, “The Whiskey Song,” is an old Irish drinking tune that sounds like it was a lot of fun to record.Idlewilde is, indeed, a longtime favorite “’round these parts,” and with 90 Proof delivers a solid album showcasing plenty of blues-based variety for broad appeal. I’d also consider it proof these guys must put on an energetic, fun live show, one I look forward to catching when the opportunity arises.

14. Florida's Song - 3:06

Sweet Voice, the emotionally expressive debut recording by Charles Atkins, is infused with strains of infectious jump blues, soul blues, raw blues shouting and echoes of gospel. And, while he’s not an established artist outside his home state of Florida, Atkins has long been a cultural and educat1ional force — and a blues hero — in Tallahassee.Often referred to as "Sir Charles," Atkins is a blues pianist and educator who received his training at the Florida School for the Blind in St. Augustine, where — like fellow FSB alumnus Ray Charles — he focused on keyboards and vocals. After graduation, Atkins went on to work professionally with Sam & Dave, the Ink Spots and Benny Latimore. Atkins also established the Blues Lab program at Florida State University, a musical outreach and education program which has become a model for similar programs throughout the U.S. The Los Angeles Juvenile Probation System sites have been awarded municipal grants specifically for Blues Lab programming. Most of the songs on Sweet Voice were written by Atkins, and much of the material recalls or honors Atkins’ late wife Mary, who passed away a few weeks before the recording sessions were set to begin. Atkins seems to be singing to her even when he’s not singing about her, as on the title track, "Sweet Voice." Here and there his lyric readings speak so plainly to how much Atkins misses her that it would seem to be painful to hear, but he infuses even the sad tunes with hopeful asides and an uplifting attitude. There are even a few sassy, feel-good numbers in the traditional blues vein, like the celebratory "It’s Me" and the feisty, humorous "Go Get Laid." The tracks sound as though they were recorded live in a performance hall or nightclub, with a live, set-down-the-microphone-and-record-the-proceedings feeling that perfectly suits the spontaneous, informal blues-gospel temper of Atkins’ material. The smoky, sultry horn arrangements and evocative saxophone solos by Bill Samuel are right on time, and guitarists Warren King and Ace Moreland (who was involved in the recording, mixing and mastering of the album) both add to the strength of the backing band.Atkins has a hearty, resonant delivery that’s full of soul — sometimes sweet and plaintive, sometimes gritty and brimming over with shouting gospel and blues tones, and his emotionally exposed, warm-hearted singing and song-writing are lovingly documented here. — B.J.  7. I Should Have Raged - 6:10
 8. Old Crimes and Dead Detectives - 3:35

Edinburgh, Scotland’s The Robin Robertson Blues Band isn’t always what you would call a blues band, but what they are is a band with a powerhouse vocalist in Annette Chapman, Robin’s spot-on guitar, great songs and a first-rate band. Six originals plus two cover songs.Robin’s blazing guitar kicks off “No Good Man” and appears throughout. Annette’s vocal is a bit reminiscent of Maggie Bell’s with the rough edges rounded off. Slide guitar plays well against Colin Hutcheon’s meaty organ on “Angry Bones”. Once again, another hearty vocal from Annette. She conjures up an extra cocky vocal performance on Kathryn Jewel Thorne and Vasti Jackson’s “I’m Bad”. Slithering slide guitar and energetic piano this time.An infectious guitar riff leads off “Hands Up”, that also features a distinctive bass line courtesy of Brian Branford and organ. “I Don’t Need My Gun When I’m Having Fun, So Put Your Hands Up”. “Nocturne” by Spike Hughes is an atmospheric instrumental with soaring and dreamy guitar tone ala Robin Trower. Other than the vocal songs, this song really stands out for me.A way funky bass line permeates “Same Old War, Better Equipment”. Electric piano and electric slide guitar. Obviously, an anti-war sentiment. The album title comes from this song. The slow piano tempered “I Should Have Raged” has a lyric that directs its’ anger at a man leaving. A very emotionally charged vocal this one. Another distinctive bass line on “Old Crimes And Dead Detectives”. A smooth and sassy vocal. The piano goes up and down in the mix to good effect.A well crafted blend of blues, R&B and roots music to provide a thoroughly enjoyable musical experience. Annette’s commanding vocal goodness is the icing on the cake of this top notch band. It is all here-Great lyrics, great production and sympathetic musicianship.

Harlem Lake - The Mirrored Mask

Label:Jazzhaus Records
Styles:Electric Blues/Blues Rock/Americana

Tracks Listing:
 1. Carry On - 3:08
 2. Fooled Again - 3:09
 3. To Tell You I'm Sorry - 5:00
 4. Beggars Can't Choose - 2:56

 7. Prelude to The Mirrored Mask - 1:47
 8. The Mirrored Mask - 4:43
 9. Temptation - 2:39
10. Jack In The Box - 2:50

‘The Mirrored Mask’ is an energetic work, which opens with two excellent singles: Carry On and Fooled Again, while Carry On impresses with powerful vocals by frontwoman Janne Timmer, heavy guitar and Hammond work and fine brass sounds, Fooled Again shows a funkier side of the band, with guitarist Sonny van den Berg showing how versatile he is. The album contains a wide range of styles and moods, from danceable numbers like Beggars Can’t Choice to moving ballads like To Tell You I’m Sorry and The Thought Of You. The latter is characterized by its soft instrumentation and melancholic lyrics, which are reminiscent of folk-Americana greats like Kacey Musgraves and Katie Pruitt. With a song like Crying In A Desert, Harlem Lake then surprises the listeners with a unique atmospheric road song in the style of J.J. Cale, complete with an impressive guitar solo. Janne Timmer shows in all ten songs that she is a very versatile and powerful singer, who also comes into her own in quiet ballads. My (and undoubtedly the) highlight of the album is the title song The Mirrored Mask, preceded by the Prelude of this work, which shows the full range of Harlem Lake's musical capabilities. To conclude the album, the band presents two more highlights, Temptation and Jack In The Box (which you might also know from the live album 'Volition Live' from 2023), with which the album is expertly rounded off with blues, jazz and Americana flair. Harlem Lake, consisting of Janne Timmer (vocals), Dave Warmerdam (keyboards, guitar), Sonny Ray van den Berg (guitar), Kjelt Ostendorf (bass) and Benjamin Torbijn (drums), created 'The Mirrored Mask' as an album that impressively shows their musical maturity and passion for songwriting. From powerful rock songs to intimate ballads, the album offers a versatile listening experience that will captivate both fans and newcomers. Known for their dynamic live performances as winners of the European Blues Challenge 2022, the band will present the songs from the new album during an extensive tour through Europe, mainly in Germany and the Netherlands, but also in Poland. Incidentally, Sonny Ray van den Berg will not participate in this tour, as the band management recently announced that he will no longer perform with the band for the time being. He will be replaced by Wick Hayen.

He’s a singer, harmonica player and songwriter who wails like Robert Plant and plays harmonica like only blues cats can” .
With the essence of blues and folk sensibilities and drawing from the many branches that have stemmed from these roots music foundations, Will focuses strongly on sound, silence, dynamics, expression and improvisation.

The third album from Misty Blues in just over a year and the second Tribute to Odetta album, there seems to be no end to the productive creativity of Misty Blues. With the positive reception of the very successful “Tell Me Who You Are” the members of Misty Blues, lead singer Gina Coleman in particular, saw even more reason to keep the work of The Queen of American Folk alive. The album that was co-produced by Coleman has already been released on Guitar One Records. Odetta Holmes was one of the great singers in the American folk scene during the 50s and 60s, she was a great influence on later artists such as Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Mavis Staples and Janis Joplin. Her status and her oeuvre are therefore not to be underestimated and yet it all seemed to disappear somewhat from the collective memory, that fact and a meeting with Odetta in the mid-90s ignited the fire in Gina Coleman to start this project. “I’m Too Old For Games” picks up the thread of the warm soulful blues that they left off with on the predecessor. The album once again clearly shows what a powerhouse of a singer Coleman is. In just under an hour she takes the rest of the excellently rehearsed band in tow. “Special Delivery Blues” is one of the absolute highlights and here the pleasure is clearly audible. The musicians know how to give each other the right space so that in every song you can enjoy a solo without it sounding like showing off, it is always in the service of the music. Close your eyes and imagine yourself in a dark nightclub for eleven songs, tucked away in a basement somewhere in New Orleans, where you leave the outside world behind for a moment and enjoy all the beauty this band has to offer.

As I often tell my readers, great blues/rock music can be found in nearly every country in the world. At Bluesrockers, we have reviewed artists from Australia, Tasmania, Germany, Belgium, the United States, Denmark, Norway, The Netherlands, England, Spain, Sweden, with others to come from places like Finland and Canada.
Thanks to the internet, artists that formerly would have not come to the world's attention now have an avenue by which to be heard. One of our primary goals at Bluesrockers is hopefully to bring some of this great music to your attention. Today's stop brings us to Bavaria and a most interesting and entertaining band Boogie Stuff. The band is a 3 piece, power trio, blues/rock/boogie band, fronted by Horst Tolks, who is rapidly becoming one of my favorite guitarists. Tolks is more than capably backed by Andy Broetzner on bass guitar and Pete Bruestle on drums. The CD includes mostly covers together with a couple of Tolks origins. The music is high energy and reminds me in ways of ZZ Top. It continues to impress me just how many European bands have been influenced by the Little Ole Band from Texas. Highlights from this CD include an excellent cover of the Andy Timmons song "Guess Who's Back In Town", the hard rocking "Quit While You're Behind", and the electric boogie bomb "The Stealer". The two best tracks, however, are the two original compositions: the instrumental "6400" and the powerhouse "Can't You Hear Me Cryin" which is my personal favorite. Two original tracks this good definitely make you look forward to future recordings from this band. (Bluesrockers)

Lloyd Spiegel (born 1979) is an Australian guitarist and singer, who plays traditional and self-penned blues. He began performing in the 1990s and as at January 2017 had produced eight albums and collaborated on numerous other recordings.
Spiegel took an interest in the blues when he was six years old and found an album by Sonny Terry Brownie McGhee in his father's record collection. His father took him to shows by Dutch Tilders and Geoff Achison and in about two years was playing in blues club bands. He was invited to the US by Brownie McGhee at age 16. Spiegel won his first talent competition at the age of 10 and was playing regular gigs in Melbourne, Australia. At the age of 13 he formed his own band, Midnight Special, which he fronted from 1993 to 1998, and at 15 he recorded and produced his first CD. He has worked as a solo performer since 1996 performing at festivals and theatre venues all around the world, including extensive tours throughout Canada, the USA, Japan, New Zealand and the Netherlands. Since 2012, Spiegel is often accompanied by drummer Tim Burnham during his Australian tours. Burnham also appears on several of his albums. In 2019, Trombonist and vocalist Lisa Baird joined the show as a permanent member, having performed as a guest artist on Spiegel’s recordings and shows for a number of years. Since 2002, Spiegel has been the face of major Australian guitar brand Cole Clark Guitars. He has been a contributor in every aspect of the company’s research and development and has four signature model guitars with the company.

Two Aces And A Jack (feat Big Jack Reynolds and The Griswolds) - Hot As You Got

Bitrate:320K/s
Year:1987
Time:41:03
Size:96,5 MB
Label:Blue Suit Records
Styles:Blues/Chicago Blues
Art:Front

Tracks Listing:
 1. I Love The Woman - 4:11
 2. The Thrill Is Gone - 3:50
 3. Down In Virginia - 2:45
 4. A.D.C. Blues - 2:43
 5. Daddy Daddy - 4:22
 6. Got My Mojo Working - 3:08
 7. That's All Right - 3:33
 8. It's Only Nine O'Clock - 6:07
 9. Little Dog - 2:17
10. Mean And Evil - 4:58
11. She Must Be A Millionaire - 3:04

The two aces are Jack and Roman Griswold, guitar and vocals, or just vocals, who for whatever reason, perhaps just because of the record company's sloppiness, are sometimes known as the Griswalds on other productions, and Big Jack Reynolds, harp, vocals and guitar. The three are based in Toledo, which is a little south of Detroit and a little further east of Chicago - which I admittedly had to look up first. But that at least documents not only their decades-long geographical location, but also describes their musical location quite well. The Griswolds and Reynolds are innovation junkies' nightmare. If anything has changed in their blues after 1960, it is a house rockin' influence, perhaps from J. B. Hutto or Hound Dog Taylor, while the soulful Westside style of Chicago is completely left out.
Apart from that, absolutely nothing great, outstanding or unheard of happens here. This is just absolutely unpretentious, good old Chicago blues being brought to the hungry crowd. Roman's broad grin in the booklet, which is actually worth buying the album alone and could make a dentist a fortune from, actually illustrates the music congenially. Balancing perfectly between a charming invitation and a nasty horror film, it says 'yes, sure, everything here is crooked and twisted and patchy and rickety, but no matter who you are or what you look like, we'll throw the party for you'. Incidentally, although the Griswolds probably played in Reynolds' band for a while, our three heroes don't meet here at all. It's a split album, on which the Griswolds play the first six songs with their own band and Reynolds plays the last five with another. Not that the music is so different that it's particularly noticeable when listening to it superficially. Anyone who thinks that's a flaw doesn't understand blues. And of course it's no disadvantage that this late 80s production could have sounded like this in 1967 or 2011. There are probably a few hundred albums that are recommended for Chicago blues newbies to start with. 'Two Aces And A Jack' is certainly not one of them. But if you're already infected and can't get enough of the sound, these three are the right choice. The Griswold brothers have released a few other albums, of which 'All The Way Down' is the only one I know, expanded to include sax and lightened to include bass, and is recommendable in the same way.

Patiently, discreetly, almost without promotion, the companion of Breton blues asserts himself year after year as a must on the French blues scene. Little media presence, Ronan is in his workshop, his studio, his home rather than on the radios: when he appears on stage, the general public, most often, still ignores him - but one concert is enough to make him obvious, a memory that will not fade. All the French-speaking festivals, from Cognac to Buis, ask for him; Left Lane Cruiser, James Leg, Scott H. Biram ask for his opening acts and his calm friendship backstage. Same refined simplicity, same taste for discreet quality in his cigarbox guitars, of which he is one of the pioneers in France, well before the current fashion - and especially in his music, a one-man-band blues work, guitar, restrained percussion, a little harmonica, deep voice scraping in the throat without losing its depth, where each element blends without hiatus, like the adjusted pieces of a master cabinetmaker. Ronan takes the time to install his blues, note by note, word by word, with warmth, with humility, in confidence with the audience. His pieces stretch out tirelessly, exploring the riff, the sound, sculpting them as if with a chisel and a plane; his hill country inspired by McDowell, Burnside & Kimbrough takes on the appearance of swamp blues. Their slow, Mississippian flow becomes irresistible, cracking the dikes, carrying feet and heads.

Young American Double Action Revolver is a three-piece band from Chicago with a different approach to the blues. Instead of adapting Windy City stylings, they look to the South for their inspiration. They’re a Hill Country ensemble who get their influences from Junior Kimbrough and R. L. Burnside rather than Muddy Waters and B.B. King.
Lead singer, guitarist and rack harmonica player John Liggett and bass player/backup vocalist Brian Mickey toured the Midwest for several years in the band Voodoo Pilot. When that group disbanded, they enlisted Mark Mickey on bass. The music they produce is stripped down, much more suited to a juke joint in the Mississippi Delta than it is in the formal surroundings of a blues bar on Chicago’s North Side while still retaining some of the feel of a power blues trio.
Like many Delta recordings, this one was recorded live in only six hours without benefit of overdubs or control room gimmickry. All of the material is original. The resulting product is stripped down trance music.Brian uses an open-tuned slide on dobro for “What A Night” as he recounts the life of a touring musician, compete with images of blood on the hay at a gig and hotel visits from the maid. He adds chorded harmonica accents atop a solid, straight-ahead rhythm pattern and heavy drum beat. He takes harp lead to introduce “My Lucky Day.” His technique is very basic, much closer to Bob Dylan or Neil Young than any of the greats, as the song speaks of the horror of surviving a shooting in which the bullets passed between his legs. The singer seeks the warmth of a distant love in the uptempo shuffle “Been So Long” before “Bar Stool Blues” serves up praise for a favorite tavern. “Let Me Do That For Ya” drones about willingness to do just about anything for the object of one’s affections, while the rocker “Love Don’t Make No Sense” repeats the title as verse throughout without any explanation. The band slows down for “It’s The Thought That Counts,” which also leaves the theme to the listener’s imagination. A military drum beat introduces “Down The Road,” which vaguely refers to lightening one’s load. “Don’t Be Down,” an eight-minute boogie spirit-lifter, and “You Won’t Believe Me,” a song of desire, conclude the disc.
Available through iTunes, Amazon, CDBaby and Spotify, Young American Double Action Revolver is pretty basic throughout. If you’re looking for something sophisticated, look elsewhere. But if you have a taste for Hill Country stylings and are seeking something different, it might be right up your alley.

“Blonde Blues”: “BLONDE” is the singer Cindy Adams. In terms of strength she is compared to Grace Slick, the singer of the American rock band “Jefferson Airplane”, who was known in the 60s for the big hit “White Rabbit” and in terms of passion and emotions with Stevie Nicks, the charismatic singer of the English blues formation “Fleetwood Mac”. Cindy is, because of her gospel background, a good songwriter. Her lyrics always tell a story in every song. “BLUES” is, because of the right mix of traditional and new musicians, one of the best groups from the North Carolina area. The other permanent band members are Ross Osteen (guitar, vocals) and Rick Siller (keyboards). “BLONDE BLUES” wants to push the boundaries of the blues and is not afraid of something new. The group started as a foursome: Cindy Adams (vocals), Michael Creech (guitar, vocals), Michael Martin (bass, vocals) and Marty McCall (drums) and mainly played covers. The atmosphere was good, Cindy also worked on her own songs and two live albums were recorded. However, due to circumstances, Michael Creech and Marty McCall had to be replaced. Rick Siller, with a broad blues and jazz background, became the new keyboard player. He had the same vision as Cindy and Michael Martin and also wanted to release his own unique material. With Ross Osteen as guitarist and vocals and Spencer Wynn as drummer, the first studio album was recorded. The album “Envision Nu Blues” with a mix of old and new rock blues was recorded in one day. The song “Satisfied” was filmed and appeared on YouTube. The band in its current line-up with 26-year-old Jeff Lott (drums) and 27-year-old Jeremy Smith (guitar, vocals) are bursting with new energy and are a source of inspiration for contemporary music. For Cindy this is the direction she wants to take further. In their album “Envision Nu Blues” “Blonde Blues” is searching for the new boundaries of the blues. For the group the title is also ‘mainstream’ and “Nu Blues” means by definition “think, conceive ‘new’ blues”. The album contains eleven songs, of which 4 are covers. Two Buddy Guy covers, one by Al Kooper and one by Doyle Bramhall II. Well-known names: Georges ”Buddy” Guy (1936-) - American blues-rock guitarist, Al Kooper (1944-) - American songwriter and Doyle Bramhall II (1968-) - singer / guitarist who toured with Roger Waters (“Pink Floyd”) and Eric Clapton. Which of the old blues legends is preferred is clear from the covers. The opener is the first Buddy Guy cover. “Best Damn Fool” is a quiet song with nicely measured guitar solos and Cindy’s powerful vocals. The other Buddy Guy cover “Hammer & Nail” is also initially a quiet song, with more input from Rick Siller on keyboards. More funky rhythm changes, jazzy keyboard work and extra pedal work from Ross Osteen bring the song into a higher gear. “Say One Thing” is the cover of Doyle Bramhall II. Ross Osteen does the vocals and the arrangements are funky and innovative. The fourth cover is from Al Kooper “I Luv U More Than U’ll Ever Know”. It is a slow song, jazzy, with sparkling piano riffs and a lot of attention for Cindy’s vocal input. Most of the other songs are from Ross Osteen and Cindy Adams. Cindy’s songs bring recognizable everyday stories. “Satisfied” is a song in which Cindy talks about the man she let go, because he was the wrong man. Why can't we be satisfied, even though we know injustice is done... ”Gingerbread Man” is another song by Cindy about growing old. It is the frightening story about the older man and woman, about the inconveniences and shortages. The songs by Ross Osteen like ”New Blues” and ”Hang On” are ‘Nu Blues’. They are songs with a lot of room for personal input and improvisations. The lyrics are important, but rather melancholic and hopeful if we give each other time and space for changes and forgiveness. The other songs are co-written by Rick Siller, the keyboard man. ”Shakin’ Off The Blues” is an old-fashioned rocking blues with a funky piano line. The message is clear “Now, one of these days, I’ll be shakin’ off all the blues someday…” ”Rain” is more of a pop song about sadness at the loss of your loved one. We end with ”If I Told You”, a ballad by Ross Osteen. With the album “Envision Nu Blues” by the group “Blonde Blues” a step into the future is taken. The group clearly wants to make a mix of old and new, with a lot of input from singer Cindy Adams as songwriter. “Envision No Blues” is not a very optimistic, but realistic album, typical for the blues. Blues is about feelings, situations and relationships. “Blonde Blues” has understood this well and they want to bring this to us, in a new contemporary and innovative way. “Blonde Blues” colors the blues in a touch of blond and blue.
