‘The Mirrored Mask’ is an energetic work, which opens with two excellent singles: Carry On and Fooled Again, while Carry On impresses with powerful vocals by frontwoman Janne Timmer, heavy guitar and Hammond work and fine brass sounds, Fooled Again shows a funkier side of the band, with guitarist Sonny van den Berg showing how versatile he is. The album contains a wide range of styles and moods, from danceable numbers like Beggars Can’t Choice to moving ballads like To Tell You I’m Sorry and The Thought Of You. The latter is characterized by its soft instrumentation and melancholic lyrics, which are reminiscent of folk-Americana greats like Kacey Musgraves and Katie Pruitt. With a song like Crying In A Desert, Harlem Lake then surprises the listeners with a unique atmospheric road song in the style of J.J. Cale, complete with an impressive guitar solo. Janne Timmer shows in all ten songs that she is a very versatile and powerful singer, who also comes into her own in quiet ballads. My (and undoubtedly the) highlight of the album is the title song The Mirrored Mask, preceded by the Prelude of this work, which shows the full range of Harlem Lake's musical capabilities. To conclude the album, the band presents two more highlights, Temptation and Jack In The Box (which you might also know from the live album 'Volition Live' from 2023), with which the album is expertly rounded off with blues, jazz and Americana flair. Harlem Lake, consisting of Janne Timmer (vocals), Dave Warmerdam (keyboards, guitar), Sonny Ray van den Berg (guitar), Kjelt Ostendorf (bass) and Benjamin Torbijn (drums), created 'The Mirrored Mask' as an album that impressively shows their musical maturity and passion for songwriting. From powerful rock songs to intimate ballads, the album offers a versatile listening experience that will captivate both fans and newcomers. Known for their dynamic live performances as winners of the European Blues Challenge 2022, the band will present the songs from the new album during an extensive tour through Europe, mainly in Germany and the Netherlands, but also in Poland. Incidentally, Sonny Ray van den Berg will not participate in this tour, as the band management recently announced that he will no longer perform with the band for the time being. He will be replaced by Wick Hayen.
