Catawompus have been around for a few years now without really taking off. The band, which was founded in Indiana in 1994 and finally moved to the country stronghold of Nashville in 1997, initially turned down a few offers from major record companies so as not to have to change their style and finally ended up with the German label Halycon Records in 2001 with their debut “Well It’s About Time”. It’s Spelled C.A.T.A.W.O.M.P.U.S is the second official album, which mainly contains tracks from their 2003 EP “The Woodpile”. On the album, the five Americans play retro rock that is a joy to listen to. The repertoire ranges from the relaxed opener Alabama Daredevil to Grateful Dead-like numbers like She's The Kind Of Woman to Broken, which is reminiscent of the Black Crowes. And those are just the first three songs on the album. The fact that there is also a touch of southern rock here is no longer overlooked, especially in the polyphonic guitar parts. But quieter tones are also struck here and there. With the romantic Hard, the sad Belle Donne and the acoustic number Goodbeys, reminiscent of Bon Jovie, there are three pure ballads on the album. The first time you listen to it, the organic production is particularly noticeable. Instead of simply going for the fattest sound possible, as is the case with most current releases, Catawompus sound pleasant, intrusive and natural. The strongest moments on this album are when Catawompus simply rock freely and fortunately that happens almost throughout the entire album. Anyone who likes good rock music from the 70s or would enjoy a slightly quieter version of the Black Crowes should give this album a chance. Retro can be so much fun...
