The third album from Misty Blues in just over a year and the second Tribute to Odetta album, there seems to be no end to the productive creativity of Misty Blues. With the positive reception of the very successful “Tell Me Who You Are” the members of Misty Blues, lead singer Gina Coleman in particular, saw even more reason to keep the work of The Queen of American Folk alive. The album that was co-produced by Coleman has already been released on Guitar One Records. Odetta Holmes was one of the great singers in the American folk scene during the 50s and 60s, she was a great influence on later artists such as Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Mavis Staples and Janis Joplin. Her status and her oeuvre are therefore not to be underestimated and yet it all seemed to disappear somewhat from the collective memory, that fact and a meeting with Odetta in the mid-90s ignited the fire in Gina Coleman to start this project. “I’m Too Old For Games” picks up the thread of the warm soulful blues that they left off with on the predecessor. The album once again clearly shows what a powerhouse of a singer Coleman is. In just under an hour she takes the rest of the excellently rehearsed band in tow. “Special Delivery Blues” is one of the absolute highlights and here the pleasure is clearly audible. The musicians know how to give each other the right space so that in every song you can enjoy a solo without it sounding like showing off, it is always in the service of the music. Close your eyes and imagine yourself in a dark nightclub for eleven songs, tucked away in a basement somewhere in New Orleans, where you leave the outside world behind for a moment and enjoy all the beauty this band has to offer.
