Charlie Morris is a mainstay of the Tampa Bay blues scene in Florida. These recordings were made over the years with a range of local artists as well as visitors from outside Florida. The sessions were live and there are very few additional ‘splices’ across this generously filled CD, many of the tunes being pretty lengthy jams. Charlie wrote most of the material here, some in conjunction with the featured artists, plays guitar on all the tracks with a revolving cast of support musicians and also handles most of the vocals. Lucky Peterson is featured on two tracks, the first of which has Betty Fox singing strongly on the punning title “Lucky Money”, Lucky and Charlie exchanging guitar solos enthusiastically; “One Word: Funky!” finds Lucky shifting to organ for an instrumental which also gives solo space to the rhythm section on these tunes, Benny Sudano on bass and Dave Reinhardt on drums. Damon Fowler plays lap steel on the moody “13 Little Bluesmen”, a slow tune in which the bluesmen gradually drop out, rather like the old nursery rhyme, and puts some attractive country licks into “Sitting By The Roadside”, both tunes having Tim Heding on organ, Mike Chavers on bass and Tom Bell on drums. Another local guitarist Jimmy Griswold locks horns with Charlie on “Yakety Clams”, a sort of deep-fried Florida version of “Yakety Yak”, Dave again pounding the skins with Andrew Lack on bass and Kevin Wilder on organ.
Bill Wharton aka ‘The Sauce Boss’ is renowned for cooking gumbo while he plays but here it is just the music on three cuts: with Dave Reinhardt again on drums and Rob McDowell on bass “Make Her Little Heart Sing” brings Sandy Atkinson to the mike on a country-tinged shuffle, “Sauce Train” belts along at high speed while an extended “Fly Gumbo” does rather outstay its welcome with George Harris on spoken vocals. George also appears on two other lengthy jams, sharing guitar duties with Charlie and a rhythm section of Tom Bell on drums and Steve Vitale on bass: the rather suggestive “Kick It, Lick It Or Leave It Alone” has a lot of guitar and “What Your Mama Done Did” adds Lori Cherry’s vocal to an upbeat shuffle with some nice uncredited organ work. Organ features also on two tracks with Shawn Brown, a well-known blues, jazz and gospel performer in the Tampa Bay area. Yet another rhythm section is in operation here with Jeff Avrin on bass and Eric Elsner on drums: the short and pacy “Buckle Up Baby” has Charlie’s jangling country guitar set against Shawn’s organ while “Tell Me The Truth” adds Josh Nelms on lead guitar, Alan Craig and Betty Fox give a hand on backing vocals and Shawn shows his gospel side. TC Carr’s harmonica features on two tracks, Mike Chavers on bass, Tom Bell on drums and Charlie, as ever, on guitar and vocals: the rocking “My Baby Don’t Cook” is a tongue-in-cheek tribute to the girl who doesn’t spend time in the kitchen because she is too busy loving her man; “The Last 12” is a gentle instrumental with excellent harp, both these tracks figuring among the stronger cuts on the album. The final track “Da-Nah” finds all the guitarists from the many sessions playing a classic Albert King riff – see if you have been listening attentively and can spot who is who! Overall this album has some good moments although some of the longer tracks border on the overindulgent, as is sometimes the case with jams. On the positive side the album shows that there is a wealth of talent in the Tampa Bay area.

Brad, a Long Island native, is a singer, songwriter, and guitarist with impressive credentials. He has
played with Bo Diddley, Hubert Sumlin, Odetta, Chuck Berry, and Jimmy Rogers, not to mention appearing on two of Pinetop Perkins’ Grammy-nominated albums. He has put out five albums of his own with his Vestapolitans since 2008 and the latest, That’s What They Say, is the best of the bunch. Vickers was joined on this project by a core crew of Margey Peters on vocals, bass, and fiddle, Bill Rankin on drums, and Dave Gross on the double bass, banjo, mandolin, percussion and piano. There were a lot more people involved in the studio, as you will soon see. The album starts out with Tampa Red’s “Seminole Blues” and the trio of Vickers, Peters, and Rankin give this song a lovely acoustic treatment with jangly bottleneck guitar and a backbeat drums. Then the band launches into the traditional “Don’t You Love Your Daddy No More,” which was taught to Brad by Leadbelly. Matt Cowan and Jim Davis brought their sax and clarinet in on this one, which give it a cool New Orleans ragtime feel. Brad takes the lead vocals on both of these, and his voice is mellow with a laidback drawl. After these openers, the remaining songs (a baker’s dozen!) are originals that were written by Vickers and Peters. These two have mature song-writing skills, and they penned clever lyrics to go along with the fantastic music that is heard throughout.
It sound like they had a lot of fun putting together That’s What They Say. There is a bit of Chuck Berry in “Another Lonesome Road” which is a neat duet with Brad and Margey on vocals, and a little yakety sax from Jim Davis. They also has a blast with “Mama’s Cookin’,” and Peters’ litany of international treats will get your mouth watering as she is accompanied by Davis and Matt Cowan on sax and Little Mikey on backing vocals. Both of these tunes are timeless, and sound like they could have been recorded any time in the past sixty years.
The band also cut an awesome ragtime track, “21st Century Rag,” which provides Margey and Charles Burnham the opportunity to bring out their fiddles. Like the title suggests, this song recounts how the things we have become used to are falling by the wayside. This is a funny contrast as this song has a definite old-time feel to it with its richly acoustic tone, including nice round double bass from Dave Gross.
One of the standout tracks is the a capella song, “Fightin’,” and you will find that it is certainly the most serious of the bunch. The lyrics are a wonderful blend of gospel harmonies from Vickers, Peters, and Mikey Junior, and they are a poignant conviction of the terrible things that people do and the way we treat each other nowadays.
Brad Vickers and the Vestapolitans have a winner with That’s What They Say, thanks to solid songwriting and their excellent performance in the studio. If you are a fan of roots or Americana music it would be in your best interests to check it out for yourself and pick up a copy if it strikes your fancy. If you want to see their live show you are in luck if you are on the east coast of the United States.

Steve Hill (aka Steve Territo) has been playing music since he was eight years old. In 1965 he switched from playing the accordion (like many an Italian kid did in those days) to guitar and harmonica. Then in the early 1970's he came to the realization that the only style of music he was interested in performing in a band setting was blues and soul influenced rock and roll. Moving to the Dallas/Fort Worth area of Texas from his hometown of Chicago, Illinois, in 1974, Hill (now also singing), formed and played in a variety of bands. From 1982 untill 1988 he headed The J.B. Strut Band which played around a seven state area as well as throughout Texas and released an album of several blues covers and seven original songs, four written by Hill and three by Hill in combination with other band members. "J.B. Strut," as the band was known locally, also opened shows for Johnny Winter, Omar and the Howlers, the Tailgators, Little Joe Blue, Big Twist and the Mellow Fellows, and others. After disbanding the group late in 1988 due to personnel changes and that old band nemesis, "artistic differences," Hill took a seven year sabbatical from playing live, preferring instead to concentrate on songwriting. By 1995, he once again started playing locally, first in a five piece band, then in The Steve Hill Trio. Today, Hill has been fortunate enough to be able to continue playing the music he wants to play with some of the best blues/rock players in the DFW area including Cadillac Johnson, Aram Doroff, Bobby Counts, Dirk Cordes, Steve Springer, Jas Stephens, Linda Waring, Michael J. Dohoney and others.

Real Name: Cecil James McNeely
Profile: Born April 29, 1927 in Watts, California.
Died September 16, 2018 at the Riverside University Health System Center.
An influential tenor saxophonist, Big Jay McNeely formed a band with Sonny Criss (alto sax) and Hampton Hawes (piano) while he was still in high school in the mid-1940s. In 1948 he began recording for Savoy Records, scoring a #1 R&B hit with "Deacon's Hop" in 1949. He pioneered a raucous, honking style of playing, and his acrobatic stage antics were well known. While performing, he would often leave the stage and play from the audience or on top of the bar. In the 1950s he performed with vocal groups, then retired from the music business in the early 1960s. In 1983 he began performing again.Brother of Bob McNeely.
Big Jay McNeely (Cecil James McNeely, Watts, Los Angeles, California, U.S., April 29, 1927 - September 16, 2018) was an American rhythm and blues tenor saxophonist. McNeely was inspired by Illinois Jacquet and Lester Young. He teamed up with his older brother Robert McNeely, who played baritone saxophone, and made his first recordings with drummer Johnny Otis, who ran the Barrelhouse Club that stood only a few blocks from McNeely's home. Shortly after he performed on Otis's "Barrel House Stomp", Ralph Bass, A&R man for Savoy Records, promptly signed him to a recording contract. Bass's boss, Herman Lubinsky, suggested the stage name Big Jay McNeely because Cecil McNeely did not sound commercial. McNeely's first hit was "The Deacon's Hop," an instrumental which topped the Billboard R&B chart in early 1949. The single was his most successful of his three chart entries. Thanks to his flamboyant playing, called "honking," McNeely remained popular through the 1950s and into the early 1960s, recording for the Exclusive, Aladdin, Imperial, Federal, Vee-Jay, and Swingin' labels. But despite a hit R&B ballad, "There Is Something on Your Mind," (1959) featuring Little Sonny Warner on vocals, and a 1963 album for Warner Bros. Records, McNeely's music career began to cool off. He quit the music industry in 1971 to become a postman. However, thanks to an R&B revival in the early 1980s, McNeely left the post office and returned to touring and recording full time, usually overseas. His original tenor sax is enshrined in the Experience Music Project in Seattle, and he was inducted into The Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame.
In 1989, Big Jay McNeely was performing at the Quasimodo Club in West Berlin the night the Berlin Wall came down, "and Cold War legend has it that Big Jay McNeely blew down the Berlin Wall in 1989 with his earth-shaking sonic sax torrents outside the Quasimodo Club in West Germany". Big Jay McNeely regularly performs at the International Boogie Woogie Festival in The Netherlands, and recorded an album with Martijn Schok, the festival's promoter, in 2009. The album is entitled Party Time, and one track from the album, "Get On Up and Boogie" (Parts 1, 2, and 3)", is featured on the vintage music compilation This is Vintage Now (2011).
The honkers were known for their raucous stage antics and expressive, exhibitionist style of playing. They overblew their saxophones and often hit on the same note over and over, much like a black Southern preacher, until their audiences were mesmerized. The style began with Illinois Jacquet's lively solo on Lionel Hampton's smash 1942 hit "Flying Home." Jacquet refined the honking technique in 1944 on the first Jazz at the Philharmonic concert in Los Angeles. Among the other saxophonists who started having honking hits in the late 1940s were Hal Singer (with the number one R&B hit "Cornbread", Lynn Hope, Joe Houston, Wild Bill Moore, Freddie Mitchell, and many more.
McNeely was credited with being the most flamboyant performer. He wore bright banana- and lime-colored suits, played under blacklights that made his horn glow in the dark, used strobe lights as early as 1952 to create an "old-time-movie" effect, and sometimes walked off the stage and out the door, usually with the club patrons following along behind. At one point, in San Diego, police arrested him on the sidewalk and hauled him off to jail, while his band kept playing on the bandstand, waiting for him to return. The honking style was fading somewhat by the early 1950s, but the honkers themselves suddenly found themselves providing rousing solos for doo wop groups.
McNeely died in September 2018.

Lafayette Leake - Big Piano Man

Bitrate:320K/s
Year:1983

Label:Blue Phoenix

Art:Front + Back

Tracks Listing:
 1. Disgusted - 4:35
 2. Memories Of Jimmy - 4:07
 3. Fog In London - 3:48
 4. If You're Not Mine - 3:22
 5. Let It All Hang Out - 3:41
 6. Midnight Blues - 7:15
 7. Lonely Piano - 5:06
 8. Left In Misery - 4:47
 9. Big Piano Man - 2:40

Born in 1917 in Winona MS, Lafayette was playing piano around the Chicago club scene in the late 40s, when he was introduced to bass-player Willie Dixon. When Willie was hired by Leonard Chess as producer, arranger and bass-man for his new studio, Lafayette was invited to sit in on many sessions.
This led to recording credits with Muddy Waters, Wolf, Rice ‘Sonny Boy II’ Miller, Little Walter, and even Chuck Berry. When Willie fell out with the Chess Brothers in 1956, Lafayette joined him at Lou Toscano’s Cobra Records, where he played with emerging West-side talents like
Otis Rush and Magic Sam. Lafayette was Willie’s right-hand-man on stage as well as in the studio house-band, and in the 60s he was one of the Chicago All-Stars that featured at many Blues Festivals, at home and overseas. During the 70s, Lafayette stepped back from the spotlight a little, playing mainly in Chicago clubs, but his reputation and talent meant he was always a welcome guest on special occasions, like Chuck Berry’s 1986 Chicago Blues Festival show, and with Willie Dixon at the White House in 1989. Sadly, that was one of Lafayette’s last appearances, as diabetes caught
up with him in 1990.~  allaboutbluesmusic.com

South of Savoy brings to you fresh sounds from the world of roots rock'n roll, blues and soul! Rooting to the swamps, forests and lakes of Estonia and Finland, South of Savoy gives a new touch to the American southern rock. From hip twisting rock'n'roll to soul-stirring blues and soul - this 5-piece band, led by a powerful female vocalist, plays a full programme of their original music and adds their favourite tunes from both the golden era of our last century and today's contemporary blues world. Operating out of Tallinn since 2022, the 5-piece band is a dynamic collaboration with raw energy and an improvisational spirit, defining South of Savoy’s sound. Their live recording approach shines through, delivering a powerful mix of energy, danger, and a gritty blues interpretation led by vocalist Krista Tiitinen. Since 2023, South of Savoy has been the house band for the legendary blues jams at Philly Joe’s Jazz Club in Tallinn, where they've dived into a treasure trove of modern blues songs, reinventing them with their own raw, signature style. "We wanted to create a blues program that truly represented us," says drummer Jeremia Kangas. "We found our initial inspiration in modern blues women like Debbie Davies, Bonnie Raitt, Koko Taylor, Samantha Fish and Susan Tedeschi. These artists’ songwriting fuelled and motivated us in the early days of the band." During the bands 3-year journey they have performed in Reykjavik during Icelandic Airwaves (2024), have done a 5-concert tour in Finland (including Pakkasukko Blues & Jazz Festival main stage), performed at Estonia's Augustibluus Festival main stage (2024) and have received radio coverage and interviews in five different countries, including album of the week in Estonia's national Radio 2. “They benefit from great and nimble interweaving guitar players, a charismatic singer, and a greasy, funky repertoire that fits right in with this bar's 'bearded, tattooed biker gang guzzling beer while playing table tennis' ambiance. South of Savoy's debut album was released in March 2025” - Justin Petrone

Big Mike and The R&B Kings are a Chicago funk, blues, and soul band from New Orleans. They take their biggest inspirations from the likes of Big James & The Chicago Playboys, The Kinsey Report, Albert King, Albert Collins, Buddy Guy, and so many more. Making up the band currently is Big Mike on lead vocals and bass, Alex Krahe on guitar, Tajh Derosier on sax and vocals, Oberon Jackson Jr on drums, and Will Rast on the organ. The band has frequent shows at venues such as the Cubby Bear, Bluebird Lanes, Kingston Mines, and others that are almost always packed. Big Mike says that his debut album, This Song’s For You, is an “eclectic album that encompasses Chicago Rhythm and Blues with elements of soul, and funk, and some rooted reggae. The album takes you on a journey of emotions. It is for everyone and anyone looking to feel something when listening. From love songs to heartbreak to just good old sing-a-long and dance-a-long songs, and great guitar solos. His album has it all.”
“Last Night” is such a great opener because of the immense amount of energy that the listener gets in just the first 30 seconds of the song. There are definitely strong vocal influences of all the great jazz and soul musicians like Stevie Wonder, Buddy Guy, BB King, and many others. “Played a Fool” has a nice 3 beat swing tempo with these soulful rock influences. There are so much strength and passion behind his voice, not only in this song but throughout the entire album.
“Save Some Funk” for Sunday is extremely edgy and energetic and really warrants getting up on your feet and dancing till it’s over! This song also shows just how great of a storyteller Big Mike is in his performances because he really does have a way with words. I appreciated the variety in his themes throughout this album because it kept this album refreshed and alive. The track, “From Time to Time,” had some more rock and funk influences that shone through in the instrumentation and style of the song. As his point of view goes from complacent to almost angry and fed up, the instrumentation mimics that same energy and fire in his voice.
“Dead Man” was a great change of pace and such a soft and emotional song which made it my absolute favorite of the album! Even though the form doesn’t stray from that of the other songs, this song still manages to stand out because of its topic and superb execution by the entire band. There is so much pain and soul poured into the instrumentation that you can feel it from the minute the song starts to its very last note. The tension swells within the instrumental break and leads us back to that softer feeling that we experience in the intro. Just when I thought I couldn’t love this song anymore, the instrumental break and solo completed blew me away!!!
“Blue Print (Beautiful)” had a Reggae spin with some elements of funk with the synth accompaniment. In the chorus of the song, there were some really well-executed scats that brought back those strong jazz influences the band embraces. The song was a great turn-around of emotion from the previous song. It felt so carefree and dreamlike, and I was so appreciative of how active his vocal range was because it created a stronger dynamic for the song. “This Song’s for You” had a nice mix of those high energy vibes with those softer elements of swing and accompaniment. The harmonies placed on the accented phrase “this song’s for you” was a subtle, yet smart stylistic choice.  The song seemed so damn simple yet so beautifully done!!! His conviction and deliverance of his performance makes him and his band shine through and stand above the rest.
“Home” is the first song that is not from Mike’s point of view, but from a woman. The chorus was infectious and instrumentation was executed flawlessly. The lyric “before she ran away she says to me…just tryin’ to find home…” is probably one of my favorite lines in the whole album because it encompasses so much, but is so simply said.
"Big Boy” and “Mr. Big Funky” follow soon after and liven up the sound again. Both of these songs, along with Someone Else Was Steppin In are great examples of why every one of their shows ends up being standing room only because you just want to get on your feel and party with them on stage!
“Hero” was another one of my favorites because it did such a phenomenal job of making the listener think the song had one message and was going one way and then completely change the point of view to something so unexpected. He starts the song as the hero and we take that ride with him and find out together that he’s no longer the hero of this story. After the instrument breakdown, the beginning part of the song comes back around to finish it off.
“Are You Serious?” brings their album to a close. This was the only instrumental track on the whole EP and I loved that this was such a soft and soulful end to “This Song’s For You.” It brought all the styles of R&B, funk, some rock, and so many others.
This band, in general, is extremely diverse and exceptionally talented at what they do. Overall, the soul and deliverance in this voice is nothing short of entrancing. He knows how to capture his audience while giving the instrumentals to shine through. Big Mike and the R&B Kings really pulled out all the stops on this album and it definitely shows! There are big things in sight for this band and I can’t WAIT for what’s next!  ~  By Maria Arroyo

Chris Barnes has appeared on many TV shows in the States, including Saturday Night Live and Seinfeld, where his stock-in-trade is taking a humorous look at life using the blues as the musical medium. This album is therefore perfect for him as he tackles a series of songs associated with the Hokum style of the 20’s and 30’s. Chris puts his distinctive style to songs about booze, gambling and loose women and you can almost hear Chris winking as he sings the lines. Of course, merely taking a few old songs would be OK but here Chris has the benefit of a first-class band, many of whom play in regular TV slots: Jimmy Vivino is on guitar, Will Lee on bass, Shawn Pelton on drums, Bette Sussman on piano and Steve Guyger on harmonica. Horns are added to some tracks by Steve Bernstein (trumpet), Charlie Pillow (sax and clarinet) and Clark Gayton (trombone). Will produced the album which was recorded in 48 hours with everyone in the same studio. The songs are all drawn from the repertoire of the Hokum Boys, Tampa Red, Big Bill Broonzy and Georgia Tom, the CD package giving details of where the originals can be found. We open with two well-known songs: “It Hurts Me Too” is stripped back with Jimmy’s slide and Steve’s harp while “Let Me Play With Your Poodle” has the horns added and Chris’ vocal really brings out the double entendre nature of the song. “I’m Gonna Get High” has Jimmy playing what sounds like banjo and Bette playing a storm on the piano and Chris updates the lyrics a little to include a reference to ‘tweets’ and exclaims ‘Don’t blame me, I voted for her’. “It’s Tight Like That” sounds very modern with slide and harp on another risqué song but the less familiar “I Had To Give Up Gym” is very twenties with the muted trombone giving a wah-wah sound behind Jimmy’s plucked banjo. The tune of “Things About Coming My Way” sounds very similar to “It Hurts Me Too” and is one of the few songs here that takes a serious look at life, Chris sounding appropriately relieved that the tide seems to have turned for him. Back to the funny stuff with “You Can’t Get Enough Of That Stuff” which takes us right back to the days of Prohibition, understandably poking fun at the law which many flouted anyway, hence the title. The second half of the album has fewer familiar songs but just as strong a performance level. Instrumental highlights include Steve’s harp lead on “Hokum Blues” and Jimmy’s down-home slide on “Somebody’s Been Using That Thing” which has a relaxed feel with a full band and more amusing lyrics. “Keep Your Mind On It” has a latin feel with great drum work from Shawn and Spanish guitar from Jimmy while “Let Me Pat That Thing” features the clarinet and piano on a series of dubious tales. The uptempo “Caught Him Doing It” finds people continually getting caught in compromising situations, Jimmy taking a very rock and roll solo though the sleevenotes identify the song as dating from 1939. “Gin Mill Blues” returns to the booze theme and the album closes with Tampa Red’s “Christmas & New Year Blues”. The band does a terrific job in recreating this old-time music and Chris gives the lyrics a ‘nod and a wink’ approach as well as adding a few sly references to contemporary issues. Overall a fun listen.

Joseph Maher was born and raised in Washington, D.C., and initially inspired by both his father's record collection and attending blues concerts in his hometown, Maher had learned to play the drums by his early teenage years. After graduation Maher assembled a three piece blues/jazz ensemble, before touring as part of Tom Principato's backing band. He later put together a five piece band known as Big Joe & the Dynaflows, who specialised in dance-oriented jump blues.
Big Joe & the Dynaflows debut album, Good Rockin' Daddy was released by Ichiban Records in 1990. Then followed a string of releases on various record labels up to All Night Long (2000). These included, Mojo, a stripped down affair which featured Jeff Sarli on bass guitar. In December 1994, The Washington Post noted that "listening to the opening (and title) track for a few seconds is all it takes to confirm that this session's atmosphere and pacing has more to do with Percy Mayfield's laconic balladry, than Big Joe Turner's barroom barking". His 1998 release, I'm Still Swingin', was given a Washington Area Music Award for Best Blues Recording. Maher has also performed with his own Big Three Trio and the Big Four Combo, which have included John Cocuzzi.
Maher later worked as the musical director in Alexandria, Virginia, in the Mick Fleetwood owned nightclub, Fleetwood's. Several occasions followed where Fleetwood booked Big Joe and the Dynaflows as his back-up band at the club. Maher has also worked extensively on other musician's recordings, including Bob Margolin's The Old School, Tom Principato's In Orbit (1991), Mark Wenner's Nothin' But, plus Ann Rabson's Music Makin' Mama (1997).
In 2005 and 2009, Maher was awarded the title of Male Blues Vocalist of the Year at the Washington Area Music Awards.
In 2000, his band was involved in the recording of I Warned You Baby, a compilation made for use by the Carolina shag scene.
In mid 2012, Maher jointly toured with Anson Funderburgh.

Blues Boy Willie's debut album, Strange Things Happening, is an excellent collection of classic Southern soul and electric blues, given a modern edge. While the production may be a little too slick for fans of classic '60s grit, there's no doubting that Willie's heart is in the right place, and he keeps things engaging even when the material gets a little predictable.

Caterpillar Maze had a slightly protracted birth for Steve Grieve and The Mourners. The fact it has been delivered lovingly into this world is something we should all be very grateful for. From track 1 all the way to the final strains of song 12, the sheer excellence of the music continues unabated. Steve Grieve coaxes the tastiest , most exemplary six string embellishments you could wish for , whilst Dan Myles seasoned vocals are the perfect vehicle for the mainly co-written tunes and he has just the right amount of throaty rasp too. Albums like these are what makes music the addictive injection it is, and more so when they arrive unexpectedly & wallop you like a ten ton tablet. There are shards of Steely Dan , a whiff of Little Feat but predominantly I hear Saratoga’s Animal Liberation Orchestra if we must conjure up likenesses. More importantly I hear supremely solid song-craft & the work of stellar musicians who combine like sugar & spice. Sweet…..most definitely. Sour…never for a second.”
– Duncan Smith Top Shelf Music 89.7FM
Like our beautiful old bus, this record has travelled a long and at times arduous road. Much of it was written sitting around kitchen tables, sandwiched between reunions, rehearsals and gigs, driving from Sydney to Canberra, the South Coast to Bellingen and Byron Bay, amid much chaos, improbable hilarity and the odd respectable ale or two.
The Mourners remains an enigmatic, sometimes frustrating, yet strangely compelling collaboration which allows us to get together once in an intense while and really play, to put on funny clothes, turn up the volume, bounce off some walls together, and against all the odds bang out some new tunes. If you derive at least as much pleasure and satisfaction from this music as we did in making it, our job will have been not only brilliantly conceived but also well executed – this, our emergent chrysalis, our collective escape from the Caterpillar Maze.

Micki Free - Dreamcatcher(EP)

 5. We Are One - 3:18
 6. Dreamcatcher Live - 3:41

Micki Free is a Grammy winner and recipient of a Native American Hall of Fame Lifetime Achievement Award. His 2024 EP release, Dreamcatcher, is an excellent mostly-blues album, with a bit of musical variety and variations among the songs, making for a fun listen that’ll soon become a welcome addition to your music collection or playlist. Micki’s band is comprised of Cindy Blackman Santana (drums), Benny Rietveld (bass), and Ray Green (vocals). Dreamcatcher also features guest appearances from Rhonda Smith (Prince, Jeff Beck) on bass and Mark “Muggie Doo” Leach (Buddy Miles) on Hammond organ and piano. The album kicks off strong with my personal favorite in the collection, the rollicking blues number “When The Devil’s At Your Door.” It’s followed by the funky blues – or perhaps it’s bluesy funk – “My Sweet Honey.” The instrumental “Dreamcatcher,” next up, has kind of an adult contemporary vibe, a bit reminiscent of ’70s mellow blues-based rock ‘n roll, and features the notable inclusion of some Native American flute musical runs (played by Micki, per the liner notes). It’s followed by “Night Crawler,” a heavy, moderately psychedelic, throwback blues rocker with a rattling, omnipresent background buzzing wall of sound.“We Are One,” the last studio recording on the EP, has kind of an acoustic vibe, with the guitar strumming giving it an almost folky blues flavor, though the electric guitar line that dances through the song add a classic rock ‘n roll energy to the song, too. It’s a very cool arrangement! Finally, the sixth song is labeled a “bonus track.” It’s “Dreamcatcher Live,” a live version of the instrumental number “Dreamcatcher.” Surprisingly, it’s much shorter than the studio version of the song, and I think it levels up the song by imbuing it with an energy that’s hard to duplicate outside a live setting. In all, Dreamcatcher is a very cool EP, one I simply couldn’t resist sharing with you via review. Definitely worth checking out!

Blues Boy Willie - Be-Who ?

 5. Let Me Funk With You - 4:11
 6. Can We Talk Before We Separate - 6:15
 7. Highway Blues - 4:48
 8. Be-Who - 5:07

Surprise hit album featuring the jukebox smash "Be Who?", a funny dialogue over laidback blues between Willie, his then wife Miss Lee and producer/friend Gary B.B. Coleman. Willie says he's gonna leave and he's only paying support on five of their seven children because the two "bug-eyed" ones aren't his. She informs him, however, the "bug-eyed" ones are the only ones who are his. They have a fight and when they make up Willie's wife accidentally calls him "B.B" and you can guess what happens next. Anyway, this isn't the best track here. Fine slow blues cuts like "Stealin' Your Love Tonight" and "Can We Talk Before We Separate?" showcase Willie's deep, rich vocals benefited by Coleman's sympathetic production. The album spent 21 weeks on Billboard's Top R & B Albums Chart, peaking at #57.

Blues music has long thirsted after the pleasures and pains of love at the heart of its emotional essence. Sometimes, though, love and the blues create a thirst for more – like the heady musical cocktail of ‘Seven Deadly Gins,’ the sparkling new album served up by the Colorado band Reckless and Blue. The group’s searing blues style has made them winners of the Colorado Blues Society’s 2026 Blues Challenge, headed for January’s International Blues Challenge. The seasoned veterans of Reckless and Blue were pulled together by George Williams in 2017, when he returned to the Denver area after three decades of travel, and sharpening his talents as a classical guitar student, band member, singer, and songwriter. ‘Seven Deadly Gins is a follow up to the band’s debut album, Can’t Give Me The Blues, released in 2021. The Reckless quintet regulars include Williams on guitar and vocals, Allen Anderson on keyboards, Tom Dillard on bass, Steve Gaskin on drums, and sultry vocalist Shaunda Fry, notable as a latecomer to the group two years ago, who didn’t begin her singing career until she turned 50. The ten songs here were written or co-written by Williams, who shares the vocals with Fry, often trading verses in the same song, adding a passionate he-said, she-said lovers’ interaction (https://recklessandblue.net/)

 9. Waitin' On You - 3:01
10. So Bad - 4:26

"First appearances, you see just another guy in a two tone shirt with no bowling insignias. But then you cue the CD…..Wow! This Massachusetts based artist kicks it in gear immediately with a self title piece called “They call me Nomad”. Doing vocal, guitar and harmonica, it is best to get out of the way cause this guy means business. Stellar back up primarily by Geoff Lutley on bass and Tracy Sherman on drums. Other artists include Peter King and Jerry Ellis on bass, Dale Monette, and Billy Klock on drums, Doug Jones and Dan Lundy on Saxophones, Fred McIntosh Hammond B-3 and Sandra Wright and Susan Duncan providing vocals. “I go to work” pleads with a spouse or future ex’spouse, to lighten up! I carry the burden, employment. Leave me be! “Coming Home to You” departs from the electric and takes you on a bottle neck acoustic journey. No this man’s just happy to be thinkin’ about his woman. “Razor’s Edge” brings back the full band with an electric slide guitar. The tune talks about the paths one takes and how sometime it pushes back! “Kickstand” adds to the heat with a up tempo instrumental tune featuring fine guitar with the of some nicely placed saxophone. “Green Eyes” comes creepin’ in like some ole Howlin’ Wolf tune. Nice work between the guitar and harp parts gives it a urban-ghetto kinda feel. A tipping of the hat to the Delta with the Skip James’s tune “Special Rider”. Very cleanly played, nicely resonating the voice and the strings together. I was ready to order another drink after this tune. “Your special rider is dead!” Now that is the blues! Yeah!
“Meet in the Bottom”, John Lee Hooker standard that’s been covered by the world and then some. Mark Nomad’s version has a decided South Side of Chicago/Hound Dog Taylor feel. Little bit of slide… little bit of fuzz tone.. pretty rockin! “Waitin’ on You” is a Nomad composition reflecting a little Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee. A few more “whoops” thrown into the mix and we’d be off chasing hounds and raccoons! Mark finishes this effort with “So Bad“, an electric slide number that pleads the case of love not returned. Very melodic slide, with shades of Derek and Elvin Bishop detected" ~  Jim/

Stefan Hauk (30) is one of Australia's brightest young Blues Rock artists. Playing guitar since the age of 4 and gigging since the age of 11, music has always been at the centre of his life.
His music can be described as dynamic, powerful and influenced by the greats of blues, soul and classic rock. His inspired guitar playing delivers shades of Gary Moore, SRV, Jimi Hendrix, Paul Kossoff and Derek Trucks and his soulful voice takes inspiration from the likes of Paul Rodgers, Chris Stapleton and Peter Gabriel.
After spending his formative years playing rock covers in bar bands in September 2017, at 21 years of age Stefan released his debut self-produced album Long Road. After spending a few years finding his way in the industry, in August 2020 Stefan released a single Truth featuring the legendary Ian Paice of Deep Purple on drums and Lachy Doley on organ.
Over the last three years Stefan has been on a roll; completing multiple national Australian tours. In 2023 he released his second studio album Heavy Handed, and a viral concert video on YouTube Homecoming - Live At The Gov. And in 2024 he performed at two major Australian festivals (Echuca Winter Blues & Mitchell Creek Rock & Blues), as well as playing his debut international shows in Italy.
Stefan’s 2025 has been his biggest year yet, he performed his most extensive Aussie tour to date, along with shows at major festivals: Blues On Broadbeach in Australia, Augustibluus in Estonia and Steinegg Live in Italy.
To close out an epic year, Stefan's third studio album “Before The Dawn” will be released on the 19th of December 2025. Stefan will be performing the new album in it's entirety on his Before The Dawn Tour, beginning at the legendary Woodford Folk Festival.

Ross Harding - The Blood & The Blues

Bitrate:320K/s
Year:2025
Time:36:20
Size:83,7 MB
Label:Self-Released
Styles:Rock/Blues

Tracks Listing:
 1. A Thousand Snakes - 4:12
 2. The Blood & The Blues - 5:32
 3. Me & Lucifer - 3:38
 4. Revelator Blues - 3:09
 5. No Rest For The Wicked - 4:22
 6. Dark City Blues - 6:18
 7. Black Rose - 4:43
 8. A Thousand Snakes - 4:23

It starts with A Thousand Snakes (Deluxe Version), which sets the tone well for the rest of the album. His voice reaching out of the darkness, telling us he’s been to hell and back, with a tone, richness and roughness you want from a tormented buesman. An acoustic start with some rich electric notes raising up from the abyss, intoxicating and magical. Black Rose is up next, and this branches out from regular blues and brings some Jimmy Page inspired acoustic guitar picking into the picture. Following this is Dark City Blues which pulls out some pain dripping notes from his electric guitar. It reminds me in tone and feel of Eric Clapton’s Edge Of Darkness TV theme. It certainly paints a picture of empty city streets in the middle of the night.Me And Lucifer hits next, this being one of the two singles. A rockabilly slide fest with more admissions of nefarious practices, talking of which, No Rest For The Wicked follows hot on it’s heels, with an electric riff which wouldn’t have sounded out of place on ZZ Top’s Tres Hombres, or even Jethro Tull’s Aqualung, and contains some dexterous guitar work, which just sends tingles up my spine. Then we have Revelator Blues, the song which seduced me some months ago, and it’s not lost any of it’s allure. I love acoustic blues, I love slide blues, with a kick drum to keep the beat. This song delivers all with such attitude, you’ve got no choice but to stomp your foot and nod your head. The title tracks follows next , an electric work out of gargantuan proportions. Quite unrelenting in it’s aural assault. It picks you up, drops you down and picks you up again, leaving your brain crying out for more as it finishes. And more there is with the last track, a non deluxe version of A Thousand Snakes, more electric and less acoustic but no less enthralling. The thing which sets Ross Harding apart from his contemporaries, is the primal and primitive feel of his songs, his voice and his playing. He really does sound like he is playing and singing to save his soul.

Debbie Bond and The Trudats - That Thing Called Love

Tracks Listing:
 1. You're the Kind of Trouble - 4:15
 2. Steady Rolling Man - 3:45
 3. Feed My Soul - 5:46
 4. I Like It Like That - 4:45
 5. Still Missing You - 3:58
 6. Tarragona Blues - 3:19
 7. Falling - 4:05
 8. That Thing Called Love - 4:57
 9. Tarragona Blues (Extended Mix) - 4:38

This is an album full of the energy gained from recording live in an Army Surplus tent in the hills of West Nashville. Made into a special album of Debbie’s Alabama inspired blues with inspiration from across the blues spectrum with some mixing and mastering in the studio; this was not as originally planned but really works. There is a cleanness of sound that has been blended using vocals, keys, guitar, harp and rhythm section that just have that magic to mix and pour out tunes that please and get those feet tapping with a collection of seven originals and two covers that fit like a glove in the sound being created on That Thing Called Love. Opening with You’re The Kind of Trouble the tone is set with the vocals that reflect in its melodic throatiness the 30 years of performing music live and in the studio on this her third album that just gets into your musical soul and continues to deliver music that just does not disappoint. The other cover is their version of Wendell Holmes Feed My Soul this is seductive and gets the hairs on the back of your neck raised and the shiver cascades down your spine; added to the mix is a sultry sax this is a track that stays with you long after the music fades.Capturing the tempo and feel of a 1920’s country fair with the dance beat of Steady Rolling Man. This is a track where the interaction of Saxophone and Piano create the mood with a ragtime beat and reflects the touring life of musicians and the speakeasy environment of times gone by. The title track is at the heart of the album and stands out from the beginning with deep soulful instrumental of muted drums, searing sax and moody bass, the guitar and Debbie’s vocals power through the track that has a dark underbelly and is different from the rest of the pack and does pack a musical punch! Want some jazzed up blues with a flamenco aire then Tarragona Blues will fit the order as the mood is captured with a click of the drums and the beat of the bossa nova entwined this is a number to get audiences out of their seats and onto the dance floor and for good measure there is an extended version bringing the album to its close. This is an album that is never hard-hitting but full of style and textures, Debbie’s vocals and guitar work ensure that and she has surrounded herself with musicians who know the sound she is creating, blues that has soul and at times a pop feel and often a dance beat but as the song says I Like It Like That(https://www.debbiebond.com/gigs.html).
