An old soul hailing from Macon Georgia USA, Hughes Taylor was immediately drawn to the blues when he first picked up the guitar. Today an accomplished guitar player with a voice that is bigger than he is, Hughes has developed his signature style: a fiery brand of blues-rock whose lineage stretches back to Stevie Ray Vaughan and Cream.
On his Facebook he is introduced as follows: “HUGHES TAYLOR puts his own spin on modern blues with echoes of Hendrix, SRV, Stax and Southern rock…”. Hughes is a talented songwriter, singer and guitarist from Macon (GA). He knew from the age of 13 that he wanted to be a musician. In 2016 he made his debut with ‘Hear My Melody’. After graduating in 2017, just before marrying the love of his life, Evy, he released ‘Restless’ (2018) and in 2018 he released ‘Good Blues, Fast’ with the Hughes Taylor Band. In 2020 Taylor toured the UK with the Heather Findlay Band. Hughes’ music is a mix of blues, blues/rock and Southern rock. ‘Modern Nostalgia’ (2021) was Hughes Taylor’s fourth studio album and for some, his best to date. It was recorded at the legendary Capricorn Sound Studios in Macon (GA). Four years after ‘Modern Nostalgia’ (2021), HUGHES TAYLOR’s latest project is ‘ROASTED’ (2025). The studio album combines the soul of blues rock with raw, exciting energy. ‘Roasted’ is a fusion of two parts. The 5-track EP ‘Roasted, Pt. 1: Dark Roast’ (2024) that was released earlier, which dives deep into the heavier, darker side of blues rock and the other part (which would logically be called ‘Roasted, Pt. 2: Light Roast’, but which I didn’t find as an EP): the remaining songs, which embrace a more cheerful, lively energy. Together, these two “halves” form a complete musical experience that shows Hughes’ growth as a guitarist and songwriter. Roasted combines raw guitar riffs, soulful grooves and expressive vocals into a sound that feels both fresh and familiar. Besides Hughes Taylor (vocals, guitar) the following were also in the studio: Ben Alford (bass, bvs), Nich Gannon (drums), Zach Wilson (keys), Emily Lynn (vocals, bvs) & Evie Somogy (bvs). On ‘ROASTED, Pt.1: DARK ROAST’ were “From the Other Side”, “Midnight Angel”, “Ballad of Big Bill McGuire”, “(In the Morning) When it's Over” and “When Love Comes Home”. The songs are heavier blues rock guitar songs, which mainly summarize Hughes as a versatile artist. “Midnight Angel” and “Ballad of Big Bill McGuire” both stand out because of the riff with the catchy groove and the backing vocals (Emily Lynn & Ben Alford). “(In the Morning) When it's Over” continues the line with guitar over organ (Zach Wilson) and “When Love Comes Home” mixes psychedelic and hard rock over an infectious driving groove. Of the remaining tracks, the uptempo “Moondance Baby” is more funky and “Until It Hits” is a quiet ballad. Together, ‘ROASTED’ is more of a great rock album from the seventies, rather than a pure blues album.
