Once considered a long-lost studio recording from John Lee Hooker, The Standard School Broadcast Recordings is the first commercial release of a rare 1973 fully electric blues band recording. Performed direct-to-tape at Coast Recorders in San Francisco, the session captures Hooker at a tumultuous and deeply transformative time of his career, accompanied by his reliable standby rhythm section of bassist Gino Skaggs and drummer Ken Swank, plus Hooker's pianist son Robert. Syphoned off to feature only a brief interview and snippets of songs in its initial scholastic run, this collection showcases the entire recording session, including expanded liner notes from the preeminent Hooker scholar Charles Shaar Murray. It's a wildly intimate and scorchingly beautiful collection of Hooker at his most raw - the blues as high art. CD contains two bonus tracks, "Sallie Mae," and "Instrumental."

Will’s intense harmonica style steals the spotlight from the traditional blues rock guitar, with a sound that owes as much to Gary Moore as it does to Sonny Boy Williamson. “I’m always looking to make new sounds with the harmonica, pushing its boundaries, trying to change people’s perception of it.” In fact Will has gone one step further and created his own signature “Wilde Tuned” harmonicas so he can play licks that weren’t possible before. “They enable me to hold my own with any blues rock guitarist”. Will gained popularity on Youtube with his mind blowing harmonica covers of classic rock guitar solos, such as Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Free Bird, which racked up over 3.5 million views, and helped him gain his 93K+ subscribers. These videos brought him to the attention of blues rock guitar legend Walter Trout, who invited him to play on his album ‘Broken’, which went to number one on the Billboard Blues Album Chart. To return the favour, Walter played guitar on the title track and first single from Will’s new album BLUES IS STILL ALIVE . “It was my great honor to be part of this music with the incredible Will Wilde. He’s the best!” says Trout, ” I look forward to hopefully more musical collaboration with this amazing young musician!”  Will picked up his first harmonica at a house party when he was sixteen. “I basically nicked it,” he says. “It was a cheap plastic Guinness harmonica just lying around amongst the drink bottles and cigarette butts, I was drawn to it.” From then on playing became an obsession. “I used to play along to old Muddy Waters records for hours every day. Sometimes I played so much my lips bled,” says Wilde. “I couldn’t get enough of it. After a while it became like an extension of me.” Will comes from a musical family. “Music was always around me” he says. “Blues, soul and classic rock were the soundtrack to my childhood.” His father is an avid music fan, his grandfather was a wartime jazz & blues pianist and his sister, Dani Wilde, is an acclaimed blues singer and guitarist in her own right.
Will has released four studio albums and one live album: Unleashed (2010), Raw Blues (2013), Live In Hamburg (2015), Bring It On Home (2018) and Bad Luck Friday (2022), as well as appearing as a guest harmonica player on albums by Walter Trout, Toby Lee, Brave Rival, Earl Thomas and Krissy Matthews. His earlier releases reflect more of a traditional Chicago blues sound, but over time he has developed a more intense style that draws from the classic rock and blues rock music he grew up on.Will was nominated “Instrumentalist of the Year” in the UK Blues Awards 2024.

Ben B. Beckendorf (aka The Reverend Bennie B. - and yes, he really is a reverend) was born in Austin, Texas in 1955 - Texas was already in the groove of the Blues with the likes of T-Bone Walker, Lightnin' Hopkins, Freddie King, and many more.. little did they know another bluesman had been born. Ben's family moved to Los Angeles, California for a while, then to Houston, Texas, and eventually located to central Texas on a ranch just North of Fredericksburg. "The closest neighbors we had were miles away, so my guitar became my best friend. I would spend hours a day listening to records and trying to figure out patterns on the guitar." Ever since he knew what a guitar was, Ben wanted one, and in 1964 he got his first one, it was a Gene Autry guitar that he found in his Grandmother's attic. In 1965, at the ripe ol' age of ten, Ben bought his first electric guitar, a used 1949 Kay electric guitar(which he still has). He learned all kinds of music - the Blues, Jazz, Rock, Folk, Country & Pop and he listened to his music heroes with a yearning ear. Unlike a lot of his friends, Ben liked to listen to Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, Otis Rush, Howlin' Wolf, Sonny Boy Williamson, and many other Blues icons. " I was always fascinated by the way the old blues cats put their heart and soul into their music."
In 1968 Ben wrote his first song, Beautiful Day(which he still plays for live audiences) and has since written and recorded over 800 songs in many different styles and textures. Ben paints a very vivid picture with his lyrics and his guitar sometimes seems to speak in words instead of notes. He writes songs for everyday people about everyday things. His melodic ballads can touch and soothe even the most stringent of hearts and his Rock & Blues tunes produce irresistable rhythms with strong backbone beats.
Ben started his first band in 1967 and has played and toured with bands, worked in studios, written, recorded, produced, and engineered music ever since. Ben has become a staple of the Texas Hill Country not only with his music, but with his artwork as well. Ben is the son of the most influential artist in Texas, the late Charles Beckendorf, and some of his talent must have rubbed off. "I have been doing artwork about as long as I have been playing music." Ben's artwork can be seen at the Charles Beckendorf Gallery in beautiful Fredericksburg, Texas- the place Bennie B. has called home for over forty years.

Fred Smith - Trumpet;
Harry Batchelor - Vocals on Miss My Love;
Alrick "Al" Myles - Vocals on Bridgeport.

Jesse "Wild Bill" Austin passed away on March 22, 1996, the day before his 66th birthday. Four years earlier, his live performance at a small bar inspired a drummer-agent and a bellydancer to form Roesch Records to disseminate this bluesman's music and talent throughout the world. Steel Trap was recorded in November 1992. It was Jesse Austin's first commercial release since the 1950's. For years, Jesse had been saving his original compositions in a briefcase.
Jesse Austin's voice was always a tough act to follow. Like Howlin Wolf, Jesse's singing always commanded attention and fans. His big voice combined with the irresistable grooves he dished out on his Hammond B-3 organ. The title cut, Steel Trap rollicks and swings like the woman with the big mouth it was written about. Cold Feeling is a dark and spooky journey from betrayal to loneliness. Bridgeport describes the happy-go-lucky "pimpwalk" up the east coast and Miss My Love is a love song with threatening overtones.
The three cover songs are well-known blues chestnuts which are given the Jesse Austin touch. Heâs the groove-master. Steel Trap put Jesse Austin and the young Roesch Records on the map.
"Twas indeed a pleasure speaking to you anent that Brobdingnagian talent, Jesse Wild Bill Austin. Steel Trap twisted our proverbial dicks and knocked 'em in the dirt." Lionel WABC Radio NYC
"Austin has a deep and raspy voice that is immediately likable. His straightforward organ playing is often at the center of these performances, surrounded by guitar, bass and drums, as well as a three piece horn section of saxes, trumpet and trombone." Paul Yamada copyright DC Blues Calender May 1996 (www.dcblues.org)
"The reaction to Austin's music, which he had tucked away in a a briefcase for nearly 40 years, has been electric!" The Greenwich Times
"Austin's vocal style is like that of the shouters of the fifties but with that distinctive howl that keeps those Georgia hogs jumping all night. It's a joy to hear a man with this strong a voice who's also able to lick that Hammond B-3 with style and grace." Peter Jordan copyright The Blues Audience Sept 1993 p.3 (www.bluesaudience.com)

Doug Deming &The Jewel Tones - What's It Gonna Take (featuring Dennis Gruenling)

Tracks Listing:
 1. What's It Gonna Take - 3:17
 2. Think Hard - 4:11
 3. One Good Reason - 3:02
 4. Poison Ivy - 4:04
 5. An Eye For an Eye - 3:51
 6. I Want You to Be My Baby - 3:53
 7. No Big Thrill - 3:23
 8. Stay Away - 2:58
 9. Lucky Charm - 4:14
10. A Pretty Girl (A Cadillac and Some Money) - 3:42
11. Bella's Boogie - 3:06

“What’s It Gonna Take” by Doug Deming & the Jewel Tones (VizzTone) is a companion release to the recent CD by harmonica wizard, Dennis Gruenling. Like Deming was prominent on Gruenling’s recording, Gruenling is featured with Deming along the Jewel Tones Andrew Gohman on bass and Devin Neel on drums. This release was recorded in Florida and is a strong set of blues and roots music that is as easy on the ears as it is certainly to get the dancers up and on the floor.
7 of the 11 songs on What’s It Gonna Take are Deming originals starting with the title track with its Deming giving his heartfelt plea as to whether his heart is gonna break or what is it gonna take. As on Gruenling’s album, there is spectacular and well crafted harmonica and guitar. I really like Deming's uncluttered, crisp playing. As a vocalist, Doug Deming is an appealing singer and his guitar playing will delight fans of Duke Robillard, Bill Kirchen and similar players.
Think Hard is built on a churning Chicago blues groove with some outstanding saxophone like harmonica behind Deming’s energetic vocal. One Good Reason is a number that evokes Bill Kirchen’s rendition of Hot Rod Lincoln, reflected by Deming’s guitar as well as by Gohman’s slapped upright bass. The group sound terrific on a fine cover of Willie Mabon’s Poison Ivy, with more dazzling harmonica. An Eye For An Eye is a Muddy Waters styled original benefiting from the spare backing as Gruenling again dazzles while Deming's simple driving playing is quite effective.
No Big Thrill is a fine original suggestive of Sonny Boy Williamson II’s Bring It On Back Home, with Anthony Smith playing the harp here. On a charming rendition of Buddy Johnson’s A Pretty Girl (A Cadillac and Some Money), Gruenling employs the bottom range of his chromatic harmonica while accompanying Deming’s vocal. Gruenling’s spirited, Bella’s Boogie, closes this CD on a dynamic note with lively guitar, a short drum break and dynamic harmonica. It is a performance that again showcases the tight, swinging groves of Deming and the Jewel Tones.
What’s It Gonna Take is a marvelously performed recording that will delight fans of Chicago and jump blues.

Wayne Buttery and the Groove Project (Canada) is a dynamic, entertaining collective with a big soulful sound. Their bluesy, engaging music just makes you want to jump up and move. Individually these artists have appeared or performed with a who's who of soul, blues, R&B, and jazz including James Cotton, Wilson Pickett, Dutch Mason, Matt Minglewood, Ronnie Hawkins, Dianne Heatherington, Dinah Christie, Buffy St. Marie, Marty Robbins, The Oakridge Boys, The Bellamy Brothers, Jennette Brantley, Joey Hollingsworth, The Majestics featuring Shawne & Jay Jackson, Tony Flaim, Gary U.S. Bonds, Curley Bridges and many others.WAYNE BUTTERY & THE GROOVE PROJECT were formed in March of 1998. Wayne reunited with former organist and keyboardist from the late 60's and 70's, Bob Federer. Bass player and vocalist Charlie Hinkel was next to join forces with Wayne and Bob. Dennis King accepted an invitation to become the band's drummer after wrapping up another musical project. Their first live performance as a quartet was in May of 1998.After performing in Ontario's Simcoe County in the Georgian Triangle for almost four years it became evident that it was time for the next phase. So in February 2001 along with some musician friends like Mike Roberts, Ronnie Douglas, Steve Thomas, Simon Wallis and Paul Robillard the band began production of their debut CD entitled WAITING. The response to date has been positive with plenty of radio airplay on blues broadcasts worldwide. John Taylor of Blues On Stage magazine wrote: The title track is a heartfelt ballad of heartbreak, stunningly effective in its straightforward simplicity. Maple Blues magazine's John Valenteyn writes: "Waiting", the title song (by Hinkel) and "Are You Doin' It Alone", with its acoustic intro, (by Buttery) are the best. "Waiting" is a well-written tender ballad done as a duo by Hinkel & Buttery and "Doin' It" is a mid tempo blues with a nice vocal and slide guitar parts. John Swartz of the Orillia Packet & Times explains: The band put together a very polished album, one that deserves to be in your collection. Shortly after the release of WAITING, four new members were added to the band's regular line-up. Trumpeter Paul Robillard, Russ Strathdee on tenor and baritone sax, John Shand who played alto sax, guitar, bass and vocals plus Larry Kurtz on harmonica and vocals/

"I have been missing southern rock. Where did it go? THE TERRY ECKARD BAND is my new favorite southern rock band. They sound similar to Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Marshall Tucker, ZZ TOP, and when Terry plays and sings the blues it's hard to keep a dry eye. Terry is a master gutarist and don't take my word for it.
This album takes me back to a time when I discovered how powerful a mix blues and boogie can be when done right. Terry has a solid, husky voice and is a terrific guitar player. The band is tight and could pass for any number of southern rockers. I hear plenty of Lynyrd Skynyrd and Allman Brothers, and ZZ Top all over the place, but I also hear the influence of plenty of others such as Mahogany Rush, Bachman Turner Overdrive and Robin Trower. The songs are all Terry's, though, and he offers up a fair variety of sounds and true life stories. The production is top notch too. This is not the kind of music I find myself turning to very often, but it's a very fun guy rock diversion, especially the instrumental sections". ~ https://www.amazon.com/ + http://www.crazywolfentertainment.com/display_bio.php?id=11049

One person who clearly knows this very well, one who gets things done and rarely sits back complacently, is our dear T.G. Copperfield. The man from southern Germany has been regularly releasing good albums for several years and this time he is playing the role of the resolute and grim rock'n'roll preacher. The guitarist, singer and songwriter calls his new album "All In Your Head" and tries to lift the thick curtain that covers our thoughts. The good Tilo Copperfield and his well-rehearsed team put their finger on many a sore spot, but of course they are not miracle healers. But this close-knit ELECTRIC BAND can do one thing very well: give the listener a damn good time, rocking uncompromisingly until their feet smoke and their eyes burn. Copperfield and his long-time buddies 'Air' Hofmann (drums), Claus Bächer (keys) and Don Karlos (bass) have hammered out a brilliant rock album with "All In Your Head", which adds another highlight to the canon of their numerous good records.

TERRY GILLESPIE
Dual USA/CAN citizen - can travel freely.
"The blues is the root, the rest is the fruit." Willie Dixon
In the mid 1960’s, Michigan was a very different place than it is now – and even more different than the small village of Vankleek Hill, Ontario Canada where guitarist, singer and songwriter Terry Gillespie now resides. Coming of age in in the USA, Canadian born Gillespie was a crafty teen who wanted nothing more than to join in and immerse himself in the roots of American music. When he was 16 or 17, the drinking age in Michigan was 21. Gillespie was six feet tall and wore a sport coat, shades and a skinny moustache that he drew on his top lip with ink. Terry would sneak in to the bars where jazz and blues music was being played – and ultimately where Gillespie would cut his teeth as a blues and roots musician in his own right. It was in these bars and clubs that Terry began to hone his craft by snapping up opportunities to play with legends including Howlin' Wolf, Buddy Guy and John Lee Hooker.
1968 brought young Gillespie to Canada. He found peace and community among the musicians and artists and helped create a vibrant musical scene. Gillespie formed Heaven’s Radio – who were widely considered the best band to come out of Ottawa in the '70s. Their highly acclaimed albums of the early 80s, 'Active' and 'Uptown Babies', were re-released as a box set in May 2007. Holger Petersen, President of Stony Plain Records and host of CBC’s long running Saturday Night Blues calls Heaven's Radio, "A highly under-rated band of that era."
From the very beginning of Gillespie’s foray in to the music industry he was never interested in being a pop star. He just wanted to play music. His goal was to get inside the music he loved, to learn the notes and nuances of the songs. Gillespie wanted to be able to deconstruct the complexities of jazz, blues and African music in order to bring it to people and allow the listener to also get inside the music and be lost among each note, each phrase, each groove and each lyric.
Fast forward more than 20 years and find Terry Gillespie as he is now. Some will call him seasoned, some may call him a veteran and others will call him a survivor – a survivor of the excesses of the music industry. A survivor indeed – though Gillespie does not dwell on the past. He takes life’s lessons, trials, and triumphs and uses them to create his music. His musical influences are diverse - drawing from his love of reggae, African music, jazz, and of course, blues.
Terry Gillespie has been called a musical Shaman, Canada's King of Roots Music and Mr. Groove for good reason - his live performances are fascinating, entertaining and captivating in a way that allows the audience to pay attention and not be distracted from the music by egotistical showmanship and maniacal guitar playing. He is both charismatic and soulful. His guitar is tasteful, his vocals beautifully phrased and he is backed by an energy of sound that pulls people off their chairs and onto the dance floor. Those in attendance at Terry Gillespie shows are part of the show, with each audience member an integral part of the band; they too become one with the music.
Terry Gillespie regularly performs in clubs and on festival stages throughout Canada. Twice he has performed at the Montreal International Jazz Festival in recent years; he has recorded two CDs (Big Money and Brother of The Blues) and has produced music for others; and in September 2007, Terry had the honour of forming a 13-piece international band to play a two-day wedding for Sacha, the son of former Canadian Prime Minister, Pierre Trudeau. In early 2012 Terry Gillespie represented the Ottawa Blues Society at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN where they were well received by new fans from across the globe.
"Terry Gillespie is one of the most sincerely talented musicians in Canada. He's a bluesman to the core, but not in the traditional sense for he has range and influences that take it to a whole new level. His blues is the truth and it comes through with every word and melody he wraps his soulful voice around. This is real." ~  Sue Foley

Less than two years following his Billboard #1 Blues album debut, Electric Church for the Spiritually Misguided (2023), New Orleans bassist, songwriter and producer Dean Zucchero is at it again with a collection of powerful and poignant original music. Song for the Sinners boasts 12 compelling tracks all written, arranged and produced by Zucchero himself. This blues-inspired euphony is elevated by a luminary cast of guest vocalists and instrumentalists including the legendary Bobby Rush, Mike Zito, Victor Wainwright, Albert Castiglia, John Németh, Jimmy Vivino, Little Freddie King, John Boutté, Glen David Andrews, Sean Riley and more. On the musical front, the record delivers enticing grooves and melodies from various genres of the 60s and 70s—Zucchero’s symphonic sanctuary. The lyrics of the songs traverse a varied poetic landscape, with destinations including the slide out of co-habitation, patricidal nightmares, Saturday night hookups, bereavement, centerfold romance, Taoist revelations, horny alcoholic wives, suicide and more. Song for the Sinners—to be released for lovers, and their sins, on February 21, 2025 on Pugnacious Records. Do yourself a favor and snatch a copy of this seductive collection.
Hailing originally from the streets of East Village, New York City, Zucchero cut his teeth in the bustling, industry-driven Manhattan music scene where songwriting and studio recording chops have long since been revered and rewarded. Cultivating these traits in the city’s local dive-bar and cabaret music incubators such as CBGBs, The Bitter End, Dan Lynch Blues Bar, The Bottom Line and Manny’s Carwash, with rock act Major Domo as well as local blues heroes Michael Powers, Popa Chubby, Sweet Georgia Brown and Frankie Paris, to name a few, Zucchero’s consequent appreciation for melody, lyrical craftsmanship, arrangement, improv and an overall connection with urban multiculturalism finds deep prominence in his records.
After a nine-year residency in Europe touring with NY blues act The HEALERS!, feat: Thomas Buck-Nasty and Italy’s premier pop- jazz group Sugarpie & The Candymen, Zucchero returned to the States in 2013 and set up shop in New Orleans where he has reconnected with urban diversity, but this time of a different flavor.He passionately embraced the rich resources of the Crescent City through an ever-abundance of local gig-work and soon-to-be international tour-work with the legendary Cyril Neville (The Meters and Neville Brothers), as well as with other local giants such as Little Freddie King, Johnny Sansone, Bruce “Sunpie” Barnes, Mason Ruffner, Mama’s Boys and Ghalia Volt, with whom he enjoyed production, bass and co-write credits on her first two albums for Ruf Records—the critically acclaimed Let The Demons Out and chart-topper Mississippi Blend hit #3 on the Billboard Blues Charts on three different occasions. Zucchero also added two bass tracks and one co-write on Volt’s top 10 Billboard Blues charting record One Woman Band and all electric bass tracks to her recent #2 Billboard Blues album Shout Sister Shout (2023). Amassing such experience and exposure, Zucchero adopted the “New Orleans” slant to rhythm & blues, rock & roll and trad-jazz while also synthesizing the more indigenous genres of Louisiana music such as Indian funk, zydeco, cajun and most of all, Louisiana blues, with its stylistic tentacles extending east to neighboring Mississippi and as far north as Memphis and Chicago. A newfound “gumbo” layered atop a historic base of exertive urban art and culture permeates Zucchero’s album with all contours of the musical melting pot set aflame; yet still there remains a calm simmer of the most basic ingredient we’ve all come to appreciate in music—“The Blues.” Whether it be New Orleans, Mississippi, Chicago or British derivation, all sub-genres are inherent and proper in his music.

One of the most exciting things about music is that it exists all over the world in so many various styles and genres, just waiting to be discovered and listened to. I have to admit that I was not familiar with the Ellis Mano Band before reviewing their brand new release titled, Morph, through Blues Rock Review has reviewed the band in the past. The Ellis Mano Band is a Swiss blues rock band formed in 2017 by Chris Ellis (vocals) and Edis Mano (guitar); and additionally includes Severin Graf (bass), Nico Looser (drums) and Lukas Bosshardt (keyboard). This will be the band’s fourth album release, and since I was not familiar with the band, I took the liberty of traveling back and listening to some of their older material. The Ellis Mano Band is a very tight and experienced group, as evidenced by their earlier work and this newest project. Their first public performances from Morph were done in their 2024 support of Deep Purple’s German tour, which adds to the band’s credibility. The band has also received high rankings in the Swiss record charts. Morph is ten studio tracks and one live track, which is the last on the album release. The first cut is a lighthearted tune titled, “Virtually Love” and is about an “A.I.” (artificial intelligence) being. Is there any such thing as perfect love? Maybe it is with a little help from “A.I.”. The fourth song on the album is “For All I Care” and it’s a real rocking number, supported by an official video release. There are some really nice instrumental pieces in this song. Turn it up loud to get the full benefit of everything that’s going on in this number. “Scars” is my favorite song from the Morph album and the bluesiest of all the tracks. The song asks the simple question of, “If I can’t get it right for me, how can I get it right for you?” Then it answers that question with, “I’ve got to let you go”. The song, “Stray”, is a clever number about a stray, street dog. I really enjoyed listening to this one, and for some strange reason, it made me think of the 1989 movie, “All Dogs Go To Heaven”. Worth mentioning is the final song on this album. “The Flight For Peace” demonstrates how talented these guys really are, in person. Again, nudge the volume up for full appreciation of this song.
Morph is a well done presentation with great arrangements and talented band members. It is obvious that they are veterans of the music business. They have received much attention and recognition in their homeland and surrounding areas. Hopefully, they’ll be able demonstrate their talents to a larger audience in the near future. This album is definitely worth checking out and enjoying for yourself. We can all look forward to what the Ellis Mano Band’s future holds

GUT-BUCKET BLUES MASTER Little Freddie King, he used to be down but his fans have raised him up. He moved out of his run-down apartment in a deteriorating neighborhood and moved to Musician Village, located in New Orleans upper 9th Ward. His domineering wife who shot him once has long since gone to her eternal rest. He got rid of his rickety bicycle and bought a new two wheel Cadillac, an electric bike (EV). It is easier on his 84 year old legs he says. His tormented ulcers have healed and no more headaches, only an occasional visit from "Arthur"... arthritis that is. Keeping busy playing his guitar and a few gigs is his dose of blues medicine that keeps him moving forward. Like a fine wine, this collection of songs is the best yet because they have aged. - "Wacko" Wade, MadeWright Records Jan 2025

Iris Sigtermans - bass;
Eric Dillisse - drums.

Special Guests:
Big Pete - harmonica - #2;
Rob Mostert - hammond - #6;
Evan Jenkins - drums - #7.

This album is as solid as a house built on stone. John F. Klaver & Co. harvest the entire blues field with funk, R&B, New Orleans style, rock, ballads and a pinch of jazz. The original compositions represent the best songwriting and a cover song by Matt Schofield is no coincidence, because John F. Klaver has also incorporated a touch of Schofield into his guitar playing.
Ladies first... with bassist Iris Sigtermans, Hammond player Bob Fridzema and drummer Eric Dillisse, the protagonist has real capacity in his band. The rhythm section delivers the complete program of groove and rock beats and this Bob Fridzema is exactly the right man to not only accompany John F. Klaver with his keyboard strokes, but also to lure him out of his shell and challenge him with his solos.
"Wheels In Motion" is full of great ideas and it is really entertaining to listen to the band hopping from style to style. The Hammond plays a significant role in the overall sound. We didn't count, but the solos of the two musicians are balanced, maybe even fifty-fifty or half-half.
The guitarist likes the big tones of the twelve-bar music and makes the listener click their tongues, especially in the ballads such as "Moment For Two". It is remarkable when the track "Dynamite" written by John F. Klaver with Evan Jenkins on drums sounds almost like a number by Matt Schofield, except for the vocals, and "I Told Ya" contains typical Klaver sounds. This interplay is interesting.
But it is not only these two pieces that are attractive. "Jam" is, for once, an instrumental that shows the class of Bob Fridzema and John F. Klaver. It's a shame, this jam could have lasted longer. Perhaps "Gimme Summo" could be mentioned as a supplement to "Jam".
How it came about that another highly skilled Hammond virtuoso like Rob Mostert is involved is a matter of debate. It's about music, about the blues, and another instrumental from the protagonist's pen is a real hit on "Wheels In Motion". Here, all the stops are pulled out, full steam ahead with a relaxed groove, rock and plenty of melody in the tank. Everything is in motion here, except for John F. Klaver's voice.
The Dutchman puts more blues into the piece "Give It Up" by Amos Lee than is actually contained in the original. If you let the two other compositions compete, then for me the Amos Lee piece comes out on top.
The John F. Klaver Band has presented a very varied album with "Wheels In Motion". It contains pretty much everything that a really good blues record needs. With an excellent rhythm section, keyboard players who know exactly how to captivate the listener and a guitarist who has learned his trade from scratch and perfectly showcases his skills on the six strings, you can't go wrong with this album.

At just 6 years old, Ralph began to take an interest in the drums and it took him only a few years to become proficient enough to accompany, with his brother Donald on guitar, to accompany their father under the name Big Daddy Kinsey & His Fabulous Sons. While Donald's reputation, who played with Albert King, soared, the two brothers formed a blues rock trio with bassist Busta Jones, White Lightnin', which released an eponymous album on Island Records produced by Felix Pappalardi. The adventure was short-lived, and Donald continued his career as an accompanist alongside Peter Tosh and Bob Marley, among others. After a joint reggae single under the name Don Kinsey And The Chosen Ones, Donald and Ralph, with their younger brother Kenneth on bass, teamed up under the name Kinsey Report – a play on words with the works of sexology pioneer Alfred Kinsey – to accompany their father on his first album, which was released in 1985 on Rooster Records. Spotted by Bruce Iglauer, the brothers, reinforced by guitarist Ron Price, then released their first independent record, in a muscular register far from the more traditional paternal approach. The blues boom of the 1990s was particularly favorable to them, and they released a second album for Alligator, before recording two records for Pointblank. They accompanied their father again, under the name Big Daddy Kinsey And Sons on “Can’t Let Go”, which appeared on Blind Pig in 1990.
Although the group’s recording career was interrupted in 1998 with “Smoke And Steel”, which marked their return to Alligator, the brothers continued to perform together occasionally – they were on the bill for the Chicago Blues Festival in 2022 – until Ralph’s health problems prevented him from playing on stage.

The Ryan Harrington Band initially came together in Dresden in the summer of 2017. Nicole Haensch and Ryan Harrington met Max Waechtler and started playing together. The trio found bassist, Matthias Baumhauer, in the summer of
2018 and Tobias Eberhardt joined up on Saxophone at the end of 2018. The Band rounded out its lineup with the addition of keyboardist, Kristian Kaiser in 2019.
Uniquely cool, original Blues describes the debut album from the soul-laced, fiery Blues band out of Dresden. 10 originals, guest appearances by Bernd "The Harp" Kleinow, Jason Craft on the Hammond Organ and John Horn on vocals are the highlights that make this album shine including "The Choir" which can be heard on three tracks.
On the right Path truly spans the musical palette of the Blues. From the funky opening track „Why don‘t you just leave me alone“ to the Texas Blues Shuffle of „I couldn‘t see“ on to the jazz influenced „Strolling“ and „That Baby of mine“, „On the right Path“ is a musical tour de force with something for every Blues fan, young or old, new to Blues or the cagey veteran. We hope you enjoy this album, we had a great time making it!

12. Cry A Tear For You - 3:50

"So, what does Jr. sound like? At times he tries to sound like Sr., with that raspy growl, and at other times he sounds like a different singer altogether. It wasn't until I read in the liner notes that all tracks were recorded between 1995 and 2007. I realized the different singing styles were perhaps a function of the 12 years it took to record and release this CD. Goin' To Mississipi was produced by Twist Turner, a name familiar to many blues fans (he also penned 10 of the 12 songs). All of the tracks have real musicians, such as Maurice John Vaughn and Melvin Taylor on guitars (not on all tracks), and of course Twist Turner on drums and percussion. I was surprised to see that background singing was done by Pirkle Lee Moses and The Eldorados (for all you doo-wop fans) and two tracks list Z.Z. Hill on harmony vocals (I presume that's dad).
So, what's the music like? Pretty damn good ... one of the better soul blues releases of the year. From the opening "Lean on Me" (not the Bill Withers track), a catchy upbeat tune with that aforementioned rasp, followed by the smooth crooning of "It Ain't Easy," the excellent songwriting and catchy hooks immediately hold your attention. One of the non-originals, "Don't Let The Green Grass Fool You," is okay, but no match for Wilson Pickett's definitive version.
There's an excellent deep soul track, "Now That I've Gone," six minutes of pure emotion that should be this release's most requested track. Included is a fine cover version of Luther Ingram's "Looking For A New Love Tonight" and " Down Home Girl (Goin' To Mississippi)," with the great Eldorados backing, and closes with the bluesy "Cry A Tear For You," all strong tracks you will want to hear again.
Visit Z.Z. Jr. on www.deltaroots.com; you'll be glad you did. Highly recommended for any lover of soul/blues, horns, and the golden days of Malaco".

 6. My Opinion - 3:49
 7. Twice as Nice - 2:25
 8. One of a Kind - 2:40
 9. Everyone's Grown Up but Me - 4:04

The nine tracks on this CD capture a mellow, late night feeling as Dan Hayes calls it himself - and he is right. The CD starts of with "Here's To You" - a tribute to Chicago blues artist Luther Allison - a mellow tribute indeed. "Money, Love And Time" is quite a fast song that features some great harmonica lines by Mark Adams and ends too fast - fast as money, love and time can go by. The next song "California" picks up the theme again and tells us how much money it really takes to live in California. A sniveling song? Yes, says Dan Hayes, but that's what blues is all about. "That's Why There's The Blues" explains it all and Holman & Gapinski's rhythmic work is quite cool - as are Mark's harmonica lines. "Flying Blind" is quite autobiographical and Dan describes how bad a drinking career can be. "My Opinion" is a love song, just as "Twice As Nice" (funky!) and "One Of A Kind" (rhythm cruise!) are. All these tracks are fun to listen to and Mark Adams' plays some sophisticated harmonica lines again. Well, and "Everyone's Grown Up But Me" is a sad blues again and has some great lyrics. California that's a great little blues album that features blues at its best.

“Jack” John Allen Knutson, was born in Fort Knox Kentucky in 1951, and raised in Virginia. Being just old enough to remember the birth of rock ’n roll in the late fifties, and just young enough to have caught the tail end of the big band era in the late sixties, he was witness to two overlapping worlds of American music, culture, and mythos. On account of that, he spent most of his adolescent years driftin’ from genre to genre. Had it not been for the timely 1969 Woodstock Music and Arts Festival and his love of music and guitars, he might never have realized his true passions, nor managed to fuse them into any reasonable means of support or livelihood. As it were, he founded Knutson Luthiery in 1981 and has been a full time guitar builder and part time professional musician ever since, writing songs and playing his own hand crafted instruments in live performance and recordings. In pursuit of his craft he has single-handedly built over 350 of his custom designed instruments for discerning players around the world, and continues to produce fine instruments out of his Forestville, California shop. John defines his experience of seeing the Duke Ellington and Count Basie Orchestras, Big Joe Turner, B.B. King, and innumerable other blues, folk, and jazz roots players in the late sixties as his most important musical reference point, and he has lived on a steady diet of tritones ever since. This notwithstanding, he freely admits he’s not living in the past, and can readily appreciate pretty much anyone who can carry a tune and honestly manifest inspiration or spirit into their music and an audience, which is what this is really all about anyway.
Fans of acoustic string band music played with skill and taste are sure to welcome this collection of 13 original songs by luthier John Knutson, whose trio includes stand-up bassist Bill Fouty and former Mill Valley mandolin master David Grisman.
Knutson plays six of the instruments he built in his shop in Forestville, including mandolins and archtop, flat-top, and resonator guitars. He sings in a back porch baritone and blows a nice harmonica on socially conscious tunes he wrote over 45 years.
He leavens his anti-war and civil rights songs with a dose of wry humor on such tracks as “Talkin’ Lovesick Serenade: A Mean-Spirited Look at Heartache” and “Lowdown Money Blues: Pickin’ for a Livin’ Is a Tough Life for Most Musicians.”
As you would expect, Grisman plays with elegance and impeccable technique on Knutson’s mix of vocals, songs, and instrumentals. The album was recorded in two six-hour sessions, “unrehearsed, unplugged and raw,” Knutson informs us, and includes between song banter among the musicians, giving the listener an added sense of being in the studio during the recording.
As with any project Grisman is involved in, the disc includes a slick, full-color booklet with the lyrics and photos and descriptions of the instruments the musicians are playing on each cut —Paul Liberatore/

On the brink of her 85th birthday, soul and gospel legend and four-time Grammy winner Candi Staton releases an American-styled project, aptly titled “Back To My Roots.” The album is a mix of covers and originals, the former touching on The Rolling Stones, Elvis Presley, and Al Green. She also performs a duet with STAX living legend William Bell. Staton says, “These songs represent my roots. Even the new songs on some level represent something I’ve experienced and that’s what real soul music is about.” The iconic singer seems to be getting a bigger wave of publicity in the UK where she just received the American Music Association UK’s most prestigious honor, The International Lifetime Achievement Award.  The core of the album was recorded in the UK too with overdubs in Nashville.  She is also starring in a new film, “I’ll Take You There,” about the music and civil rights history of Alabama. There are a host of musicians and guests throughout that we will detail as we go centered around the core group of keyboardist (piano, organ , Rhodes) Myra Walker, guitarist Steve Lewis, and drummer Marcus Williams.  Opening original “I Missed the Target” is a gospel infused blues featuring Harry Connick Jr.’s longtime guitarist Jonathan DuBose Jr.  There are four background (“Hallelujah”) vocalists including Maggie Peebles, Staton’ older sister, who alongside Staton was a member of the Jewell Gospel Trio in the 1950s. Peebles sings two duets with Staton including the stirring traditional “It’s Gonna Rain,” in tribute to their mother. In keeping with the varied instrumentation throughout , this one just feature drum, electric guitar (Kenny Vaughn), steel guitar (Chris Scruggs) , and a bevy of six vocalists. Later the two sisters trade verses on the Thomas Dorsey 1939 classic “There Will Be Peace in the Valley,” popularized by Elvis.
As you listen, don’t be too fixated on terms such as roots and Americana. This is in essence a GOSPEL record, even down to the new songs.  Almost every track has at least one background vocalist, most with several. Original “Hang on in There, featuring blues guitarist Larry McCray is case in point and she renders her cover of The Rolling Stones 1972 hit, “Shine A Light” features a large choir, helping her to clearly put her own stamp on the song. She revives another Dorsey classic, often sung by Al Green, in “ The Lord Will Make a Way Somehow,” imbues by tasty blues guitar from Lewis and church-like organ. Her “God’s Gonna Use Me Anyway’ plays to a syncopated, slightly Caribbean rhythm as she duets with Karen Bryant, in the latter’s lone appearance. The pivotal track is “1963” where Staton dramatically delivers impassioned spoken words about the four Black girls killed in the Birmingham Church bombing (‘when I was 23 on that bloody Sunday in 1963”). Staton pours out her deepest emotions here claiming that it was so emotional she could only do it in one take. Unfortunately the racism she speaks about is still all too prevalent and on the rise under you know who. “Reach Down and Touch Heaven for Me” finds Staton alone on piano for the first time on record although she was a church pianist in the ‘60s. She says this original is straight Baptist as she and her three background vocalists make a a plea for the homeless. The standout up-tempo Motown-styled “Love Breakthrough” rings through as a roof raising church singalong.  She unearths Aaron Frazer & the Flying Stars of Brooklyn NY’s 2017 “My God Has a Telephone,” arranging it in a syncopated Malaco arrangement replete with three background vocalists and a couple of cameo verses from William Bell. The closer owes to late country singer Lari White. “in God’s Hands We Rest Untroubled” is a song that’s Staton’s held onto for a decade, finally getting a chance to record it. The orchestral backdrop driven by keyboards and special effects has this one sounding much different and far more solemn than the other tracks yet there is a sequence where Staton sings alone, evoking that 2006 brilliant album of hers, “His Hands.” Staton remains in fine voice almost twenty years later and hasn’t lost a drop of passion – Jim Hynes.
