With the EllerSoul label, harmonica player and singer Li’l Ronnie debuts with his band The Grand Dukes. Recorded in early January of this year, 2012, the album is a powerful showcase of the talent of this harmonica player, singer, and songwriter, along with his band's guitarist, Ivan Applerouth. Together they wrote twelve of the fourteen compositions on the album, in addition to "Buzz Me" by Louis Jordan and "C’est La Vie" by Chuck Berry. The album is heading in the right direction, with a handful of tracks that move between rockin’ blues, swamp rock, Chicago blues, and jump rock—all solid songs that powerfully and emotionally resonate with the listener, constantly and relentlessly delivering swing, twist, and groove in equal measure. Li’l Ronnie Owens plays beautifully crafted riffs and phrases with skill, precision, and good pitch, although at times his voice doesn't quite reach the heights it deserves. In any case, it's an honest and well-made album, worthy of applause and generally receiving a very good rating.
