The Badrock Blues Band may not receive frequent mainstream media airplay, but it maintains a solid, enduring presence in the Austrian and German blues-rock scenes. With a career spanning over 30 years, the group is finally releasing its first studio album, *Shadows*—a title that could well be seen as synonymous with perseverance.
Formed in Upper Austria in 1992, the sextet had been working for years on what would become their debut record: an album consisting entirely of original songs infused with the blend of traditional blues and classic rock that has defined their sound from the start. However, the pandemic and the resulting isolation forced a halt to the recording process, putting the project on hold.
Even so, the idea of recording was never abandoned. The album remained a key goal for the time when a return to normalcy would be possible. That moment eventually arrived. After months of rehearsals and getting back into the rhythm of live performances, The Badrock Blues Band entered the studio in July 2024. Yet, just a week into the sessions, Gerald “Mercy” Schuldenzucker—the band’s guitarist, founder, and a driving creative force—passed away. Once again, the project was suspended.
The devastation caused by the loss was profound. Nevertheless, the remaining members decided to press on, convinced that completing the album was the best way to honor their bandmate, celebrate the band's history, and find the momentum to continue.
*Shadows* brings together 15 songs that clearly showcase The Badrock Blues Band’s influences—Muddy Waters, Gary Moore, ZZ Top, and Stevie Ray Vaughan—on a journey through the soul of the blues that ranges from energetic, hard-hitting tracks to contemplative ballads. The album underwent no substantial changes from the original concept; the aim was for it to sound exactly as Schuldenzucker had envisioned. “In June 2025, we finally finished the album. Listening to it for the first time was a truly special moment; the spirit and unbridled joy of playing that have defined the band since its inception are clearly palpable. *Shadows* is an album with a moving story and deep emotional resonance. It is a testament to the music we love and the friends we will always remember,” says bassist Siegfried Horvath.
