'I've Chosen Love' is an album of two parts, a yin-and-yang of both production techniques and recording mentality. Half of the songs were written using "love" as a lyrical cornerstone, and built on a foundation of soul and blues inspiration, written and mixed in Memphis with the spirit of STAX, Al Green, and Isaac Hayes hovering near, but recorded in the funky blues-rock studio Bud's Recording Service in Austin. These songs, "I've Chosen Love", "Tell Somebody What Love Is," "Don't Let Love Slip Away", and "Keep on Keepin On" were all built with a big studio band, around the core of double-drummers Johnny Radelat (Gary Clark Jr) and Lemuel Hayes (Cindy Wilson), with Anthony Farrell (JJ Grey & Mofro / Greyhounds) on bass. As the tracks grew, Anthony Farrell pushed them from roots-rock to a more cinematic scope with his layered synth work, Art Edmaiston brought a true Memphis vibe with saxophone on "Keep On", and vocal performances by Heather Moulder and Kathleen Turchi made the album a collective rather than front-man-only effort. On the flip-side of these songs, the rest of the album was recorded well into the COVID quarantine, outdoors in the backyard on a late summer night in Nashville, surrounded by cicadas. In contrast to the studio-tight sound, these more extended tracks feature a purely neighborhood band, playing only for themselves, and in celebration of being able to make music in a time without the usual shows, sessions, or collaborations. With an all-Mississippi rhythm section of Wallace Lester (Como Mama's, Reverend John Wilkins) on drums and Lee McAlilly on bass hypnotically grooving, and Heather Moulder's keyboards serving double-duty between rhythm section and lead, there couldn't be a better dance floor for the twin guitars of Reed Turchi and Ben Sparaco to spin through. Thanks to the state of the world beyond anyone's control, 'I've Chosen Love' has become an amazingly appropriate album of the times, a combination of the carefully-planned out and produced recording sessions, and the freely improvised, of-the-moment joy in spontaneous performance with a group of friends under the summer moon.

I discovered this whilst idly surfing on Spotify. If you like your rock bluesy with a southern swampy feel this will float your boat but not necessarily sail you into the sunset. The first track kicks off the whole thing well but far too little of what follows is truly memorable although the song 'I Resign' is gorgeous .

John Wickham discovered a love for the guitar at age ten as an outlet for his innate musical gifts and a source of solace during difficult teenage years. He learned from “every guitar solo I could get my ears on,” during those early years. Since that time, John’s musical journey of over 5 decades has taken him into blues, rock, country rock, pop and jazz with ethereal textures. He is one of the early pioneers of the Contemporary Christian Music genre that sprang out of the Jesus People renewal of the 1960s and 70s in coastal Orange County, California. John was a member of the early Maranatha! Music label bands The Way and Parable where he met his wife Lisa (who was also in the band Parable, singer, percussionist). He was the guitarist for the Benny Hester band during the late 70’s and early 80’s. He and his wife recorded two CD’s—‘Face to face’ and ‘There’s No Greater Love’. John also recorded an instrumental Christmas album simply entitled ‘Christmas Album’. For nearly four decades, beginning in 1981, John and Lisa kept the joy and revival of the Jesus Movement moving in the church as they served as worship leaders. They have three grown children—Evan, Philip, and Jillian— and nine grandchildren.
Years of playing and songwriting have given John a unique collection of songs and tracks.  As he began going back through the years, working song by song, the vision for City Light emerged. Instrumentals, featured vocalists and inspired new material brought the vision to life. John is joined by family & friends who lent their vocal talent to five of the tracks. The album reflects decades of John’s musical calling—and the journey of a generation saved and empowered by the love of God to rebuild their lives, revive the Church, and pass their faith on to generations to come.

Raised in country New South Wales, Australia, Aaron began playing guitar at age 10 after being inspired by Stevie Ray Vaughan. He was influenced by his father’s record collection, especially by great blues musicians like BB King, Buddy Guy, Little Walter, Jimmy Reed and Howlin’ Wolf.
He began playing music professionally during high school. After high school he was accepted into the Conservatorium of Music on both jazz guitar and jazz vocals, where he studied music theory for twelve months before leaving to take up a short-term teaching position. He has made a living from music ever since – playing thousands of gigs throughout the world, studio session work, singing jingles for TV and radio, writing and arranging etc. He has had the privilege of meeting, playing, recording, studying, and living with some of the world’s best musicians and singers. He has appeared on most major Australian television networks. His original songs have received airplay both in Australia and overseas.
After years of being a sideman musician – playing other people’s music – Aaron has started leading his own band, where he can play the music that excites him; the legendary African-American styles of Soul, Blues, Funk, Jazz, Gospel, R&B.

This superb album from Johnny Hunkins, released on the Grooveyard Records Label has it all. It’s Bluesy, Melodic, Rocks Hard and has a couple of quality laid back numbers all full of class. This man can seriously play the six string and combined with such a talented line up of musicians including Derek St. Holmes, Jarrod England, Chris Duarte, Dirty Dave Osti, Tony Franklin and Ryan Hole, the quality is outstanding and they deliver the goods big time.
I highly recommend you check this album out if you have not heard of Johnny Hunkins before or even if you just like solid Bluesy Rock... It is a beauty!!
