Glusterfunk is a blues-funk trio from Austin, TX made up of Alex Felan on keys/vocals, John Graham on "the skins", and Pat Kelly on guitar.
"It’s not about how the ingredients look or smell; it’s the care and attention you put into it that makes it so tasty." (Ama/Mamo) It all came down to that spring afternoon in 2004. Clusterfunk had been playing in and around Central, East, and South Texas—along with brief forays into Louisiana—for the better part of three years. During this time, Clusterfunk was an up-and-coming four-piece band playing funk, soul, blues... you get the picture. As is typical for the scene, Clusterfunk went through guitarists the way they drank Keystones on a Sunday... fast and loud! (Clusterfunk found 'El Chango Blanco' in early 2002, but we’ll get to that later). Then, in early spring of '04, Clusterfunk lost a close, dear friend: their original bassist, Brad Segal... (as a side note, he had just gotten married). That was when Alex Felan (organ/Rhodes), John Graham (drums), and Pat Kelly (guitar) decided Clusterfunk was about to go "three-piece." Believe it or not—yes, indeed—someone decided Alex could pump out bass grooves on the organ or Rhodes with his left hand while simultaneously covering organ lines and Rhodes parts with his right. Then, when no one was looking, he’d go ahead and sing, too. John Graham—and we should take a moment here to acknowledge that he’s a Louisiana boy and we can’t always be held responsible for his actions—looked around and decided it was time to "strip this damn kit down!" He left nothing but the bass drum, the snare, a couple of those shiny, noisy things... and a cowbell. Pat "El Chango Blanco" looked up and let everyone know right then that he was going to keep playing his electric guitar—and that he’d be using his new amp (vintage, classic, old-school—you get the idea). El Chango is a towering presence who plays guitar as if standing atop a mountain peak. All three are lifelong musicians. Grounded in the fundamentals of melody, timing, space, and improvisation, the new Clusterfunk set out to craft a fresh sound while preparing their debut CD. "We knew we wanted to keep playing groove-oriented music—music that makes you want to dance, or just bob your head and move your neck while sitting in a chair, in your car, wherever. But at the same time, we wanted to capture that raw, open blues-rock feel when the moment called for it." Their debut release, *Songs From the Satchel*, gave them the freedom to push their sound further than ever imagined. The opening track, "Can You Feel It?", kicks off the CD with the same pulse and groove you experience when seeing this power trio come alive on stage. "Being a trio lets us hear the space—and feel it, too. We can play off and complement each other without things getting out of hand. We can really crank up the volume, yet we always stay locked into the rhythm—always able to strip it down to the essentials." "It makes an incredible sound." (JG) Clusterfunk moves freely in and out of styles without missing a beat. "Little Things" is a funky reggae track that sounds the way only Clusterfunk can. Drawing bits and pieces from The Police—and... mostly The Police—this is Clusterfunk's offering to the crowd. Smooth, old-fashioned R&B makes an appearance with "Smooth Shaker." Based on a Melvin Sparks tune titled "Texas Twister," it’s that song about the girl you meet who erases the memory of the most beautiful girl you’d seen the night before. It has a great classic R&B feel. "At the heart of Clusterfunk is the desire to play and create on stage for everyone to see. We love pulling out a new song and just playing it. You play it over and over and never let anyone know what it is. It’s our little thing. We use it to transition from one song to another, or to extend a track while giving the crowd a new groove to dance to. So when someone asks, 'Hey, what was that?' you’re stuck trying to give it a name." (PK) "Ode de' Mama" is that song. The only instrumental on the CD, "Ode de' Mama" satisfies your craving for a jam session and lets the band move and shake you however you like. "Stride" is a raw rock-and-blues track that showcases Clusterfunk's "front porch" style. The CD closes with "Set Me Free." This is a self-reflective piece that brings all the elements together, telling the story of a man at the end of his rope, looking for a little help to get back on track. Clusterfunk and *Songs From the Satchel* are here to get you moving. You can't go wrong. Just like the saying about the ingredients—look beyond the two white varieties and the pasty Mexican white one; the proof is in the tasty chops you get when it all comes together... Clusterfunk-style... you know?
