Following the success of an album like 2019’s Rise, many musicians would hew closely to their established format and feel, building on strengths, while avoiding large, risky departures from a proven winner. Perhaps due to a life lived as a true performing musician who values artistry and authenticity over commercial success, Joanna Connor instead takes a bold risk with 4801 South Indiana Avenue. She is a fearless veteran who appears to be entering a new phase of her career. The title of the album is as telling as it is cryptic. It refers to the location of Theresa’s Lounge, a south side Chicago club that once hosted some of the finest blues in the world in a no-frills barroom setting. And with the help of producers Joe Bonamassa and Josh Smith, Connor creates a set that gives listeners a glimpse at what music might have been played at Theresa’s were it around today. For a studio album this technically stellar and concisely written, it is soaked in a rawness and energy that exceeds many live performances.
Connor wastes no time opening “Destination” with fiery-rapid fire slide-licks that display an impressive combination of speed and precision. Reese Wynans provides a full-bodied piano underpinning that allows the vocal call-and-response duo of Connor and Jimmy Hall to flex their singing muscles. The same piano heft reappears on “Come Back Home,” this time with the tandem of Calvin Turner (bass) and Lemar Carter (drums) driving the song with a rhythm both thick and punchy. While the structures of both opening tunes remain largely traditional, Connor’s gritty, blistering solo’s are anything but, and the open feel of Carter’s percussion on the peppy “I Feel So Good” and “Please Help” allow Conner to show her virtuosity as a rhythm guitarist. “Bad News” might be the strongest number of the bunch for a number of reasons. With a lot of nuanced sonic texture, and possibly the best version of the triple-headed guitar attack of Connor, Smith, and Bonamassa, listeners will appreciate the willingness of the team to stretch this number out a bit. “Cut You Loose” breaks away from anything expected, beginning with the opening fuzzy riffs and acoustic slide. Tempo changes throughout the song and creative verses make for one of the set’s most interesting listens, and also sets a high bar for what hard modern blues can aspire to. The final track, “It’s My Time,” finishes the set nicely while exploring a calmer, more serene aspect of Connor’s voice. And it is Connor’s voice that provides an extraordinary surprise on this album. Instrumental ear-candy, including tons of memorable guitar, is to be expected with an artist/producer pairing like this. However, listeners would be advised to dedicate a spin to focus solely on Connor’s vocal range, intensity, and vulnerability. Her lived-in grit and conviction bolster a voice that carries her songs by itself, even though most people have come to know her for her guitar. The album contains too many bright points to list in one brief review. Tasteful and judicious use of extra-musical sounds, great horn arrangements, and the many clever lyrical turns of phrase are just a few treats that are left for fans to discover themselves. The album delights from cover to cover and each individual song reveals new gems with each listen. 4801 South Indiana Avenue might be Joanna Connor’s best, and its bold, powerful character suggests that her next may likely be even better.

The Electric Mudd - Call It What You Will

 1. John Higgins - 4:51

Born in the Mississippi Delta, infused with the blues, and steeped in soul music, The Electric Mudd have formulated the recipe for Delta Swamp Boogie. Consisting of six accomplished musicians, The Electric Mudd are gaining much attention for their trademark music and high-energy performances. David Burchfield, whose powerful vocals drip over the music like southern gravy on biscuits, assaults the listeners with warm guitar leads that call up memories of San Francisco Bay area artist of the sixties. Together with Brian Ware's authentic blues licks, the duel guitarists weave melodies that wrap the listener in a blanket of groove. Drummer Jason Boyles and Percussionist Jack McWilliams make up the rhythmic onslaught that fuels their music with a plethora of energy. Keyboardist Chuck Davis' experience and casual approach adds texture and a delicate touch to the plate. Rounding out the lineup is Nick Sosebee's thunderous bass guitar which provides a solid foundation to a powerhouse band.
The Electric Mudd formed when David, Nick, and Jason decided to leave a former band to begin exploring new territory. Having grown up together, they had developed a musical language of their own. They wrote a good deal of fresh material and pounded out the kinks, and then added McWilliams to the mix. After playing gigs in the delta, local music store owner Brian Ware sat in on several occasions and soon joined the band permanently. The band began expanding their repertoire, and was soon playing to larger crowds in such places as legendary Blues landmarks Airport Grocery and Hopson's Plantation in Clarksdale. Around this time, David happened to meet Chuck at a local music store in Greenwood and the roster was finalized soon after.
By the Fall of 2002, it was apparent that they had a loyal fan base that was steadily growing night after night. They played an increasing number of gigs and shared the stage with such noticeble musicians Jim Dickinson, Cary Hudson, Chris Etheridge, and The Kudzu Kings. They began making plans to record an album and by February 2003, they had enlisted the help of recording veteran Jeffrey Reed. They soon began production of their first album "Call It What You Will." During the recording sessions they welcomed Robert Chaffe of The Kudzu Kings, who sat in on four songs. Consisting of ten songs, "Call It What You Will" is a wonderful snapshot of the band's highly danceable "Delta Swamp Boogie." The Electric Mudd employs improvisation on a nightly basis to keep the music fresh and consistently rises to higher levels every time they play. Blending rock and roll, blues, jazz, folk, and soul,The Electric Mudd is so funky, they'll make you want to jump in the shower.

Jason Ricci & New Blood - Rocket Number 9

Year: 2007
Time: 74:10
Size: 170,6 MB
Label: Eclecto Groove
Styles: Blues/Blues Rock/Harp Blues
Art: Front

Tracks Listing:
 1. The Rocker -  6:59
 2. I'm a New Man -  5:11
 3. Loving Eyes - 11:15
 4. Dodecahedron -  5:16
 5. Mr.Satan -  3:23

 9. The Eternal Is -  5:29
10. Snowflakes and Horses -  4:36
11. Sonja -  6:19
12. Rocket Number 9 - 10:37

With his pink hair, sullen, expressionless face, and black clothes, harp blower Jason Ricci looks more art damaged emo kid than bluesman, but looks can be deceiving. Ricci tours relentlessly and has brought plenty of new fans to the genre with an approach that combines spacy, jam band meandering, the almost metallic guitar attack of Shawn Starski, and wide open arrangements that touch on jazz, rock, funk, Arab, punk, and, of course, blues. The album combines heavy, bluesy tunes and unexpectedly mellow soul outings. The title track, a Sun Ra tune, shows off the resourcefulness of Ricci and his bandmates -- Starski on guitar, Todd Edmunds on acoustic and electric bass, keys, and percussion, and Ron Sutton on drums. The arrangement opens with a sinister harp interlude, and switches throughout from a straightforward blues-rock vamp to brief solo breaks featuring quiet, jazzy guitar breaks full of swinging comped chords, measured single-note runs and odd effects, hushed bass ruminations, nose flute work from Ricci in the style of Rahsaan Roland Kirk, and harp that often sounds as much like a horn section as a harmonica. Guest Michael Peloquin brings a bit of sax in to add an extra flavor. It clocks in at over ten minutes but never loses focus. "The Blow Zone Layer" is a Chicago style jumper with distorted harp and an aerobic rhythm track. Sutton rushes the beat to keep the energy high. "The Rocker" is metal-blues with plenty of meat on the bone, but Ricci's vocal is over the top and somewhat embarrassing. His harp, however, and Sutton's shredding guitar work, full of humorously tossed off arena rock clichés, is impressive. "Loving Eyes" has a vaguely Eastern sound -- Ricci calls it his Junior Kimbrough-meets-Byrds piece -- while Sutton's guitar chimes and shimmers with long sustained notes that match Ricci's restrained blowing. "Sonja," written by Starski and Ricci, is melodic and meditative, with a Beatlesque melody, some hushed non-blues, almost country, harp, and delicate chiming guitar work. Sutton's trap drum is almost invisible, adding just the suggestion of a beat. "Deliver Us" is a funky, gospel tinged tune, with a more subdued vocal from Ricci and some uncredited churchy organ, and brief emotion drenched solos from Ricci and Starski. Vocally there are times that Ricci tries too hard to sound black, or like a young Mick Jagger, which can be embarrassing, but there's no denying his versatility on the harmonica, or Starski's guitar prowess.

14. Turn Out the Lights (Feat. Charles Tuperville) - 4:11
15. The Man Who Shot Mustang Sally (Feat. Charles Tuperville) - 3:59

Ellison’s partner Walt Richmond can be credited with the tight arrangements and mix sounds and the tasty addition of the Hot Tamale horns, although the use of electronic drums feels a tad unauthentic at times. Ellison’s wit is also on display here with the snappy venom of barrel house rambler “You Talk Too Much,” and the terrifically sarcastic “The Man Who Shot Mustang Sally.” Walking through the Fire is a fine collection of rockin’ blues, and soul from an under the radar artist.

Guitarist Jimmy Rogers was the last living connection to the groundbreaking first Chicago band of Muddy Waters (informally dubbed "the Headhunters" for their penchant of dropping by other musicians' gigs and "cutting their heads" with a superior on-stage performance). Instead of basking in world-wide veneration, he was merely a well-respected Chicago elder boasting a seminal '50s Chess Records catalog, both behind Waters and on his own. Born James A. Lane (Rogers was his stepdad's surname), the guitarist grew up all over: Mississippi, Atlanta, West Memphis, Memphis, and St. Louis. Actually, Rogers started out on harp as a teenager. Big Bill Broonzy, Joe Willie Wilkins, and Robert Jr. Lockwood all influenced him, the latter two when he passed through Helena. Rogers settled in Chicago during the early '40s and began playing professionally around 1946, gigging with Sonny Boy Williamson, Sunnyland Slim, and Broonzy. Rogers was playing harp with guitarist Blue Smitty when Muddy Waters joined them. When Smitty split, Little Walter was welcomed into the configuration, Rogers switched over to second guitar, and the entire post-war Chicago blues genre felt the stylistic earthquake that directly followed. Rogers made his recorded debut as a leader in 1947 for the tiny Ora-Nelle logo, then saw his efforts for Regal and Apollo go unissued. Those labels' monumental errors in judgment were the gain of Leonard Chess, who recognized the comparatively smooth-voiced Rogers' potential as a blues star in his own right. (He first played with Muddy Waters on an Aristocrat 78 in 1949 and remained his indispensable rhythm guitarist on wax into 1955.) With Walter and bassist Big Crawford laying down support, Rogers' debut Chess single in 1950, "That's All Right," has earned standard status after countless covers, but his version still reigns supreme. Rogers' artistic quality was remarkably high while at Chess. "The World Is in a Tangle," "Money, Marbles and Chalk," "Back Door Friend," "Left Me with a Broken Heart," "Act Like You Love Me," and the 1954 rockers "Sloppy Drunk" and "Chicago Bound" are essential early-'50s Chicago blues. In 1955, Rogers left Muddy Waters to venture out as a bandleader, cutting another gem, "You're the One," for Chess. He made his only appearance on Billboard's R&B charts in early 1957 with the driving "Walking by Myself," which boasted a stunning harp solo from Big Walter Horton (a last-second stand-in for no-show Good Rockin' Charles). The tune itself was an adaptation of a T-Bone Walker tune, "Why Not," that Rogers had played rhythm guitar on when Walker cut it for Atlantic. By 1957, blues was losing favor at Chess, the label reaping the rewards of rock via Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley. Rogers' platters slowed to a trickle, though his 1959 Chess farewell, "Rock This House," ranked with his most exciting outings (Reggie Boyd's light-fingered guitar wasn't the least of its charms).Rogers virtually retired from music for a time during the '60s, operating a Westside clothing shop that burned down in the aftermath of Dr. Martin Luther King's tragic assassination. He returned to the studio in 1972 for Leon Russell's Shelter logo, cutting his first LP, Gold-Tailed Bird (with help from the Aces and Freddie King). There were a few more fine albums -- notably Ludella, a 1990 set for Antone's -- but Rogers never fattened his discography nearly as much as some of his contemporaries have. Jimmy's son, Jimmy D. Lane, played rhythm guitar in his dad's band and fronts a combo of his own on the side. Rogers died December 19, 1997. At the time of his death, he was working on an all-star project featuring contributions from Eric Clapton, Taj Mahal, Robert Plant, and Jimmy Page, and Mick Jagger and Keith Richards; upon its completion, the disc was issued posthumously in early 1999 under the title Blues, Blues, Blues. /Biography by Bill Dahl, AllMusic

A talented singer/songwriter, guitarist, and blues-rocker, Scott Ellison was born on February 13, 1954, in Tulsa, OK. By the '70s, Tulsa had become an unexpected hotbed of blues-based rock bands (as proven by both Eric Clapton and Freddie King's backing bands hailing from the area), which was around the same time that Ellison began playing with others, such as country singer Jesseca James (Conway Twitty's daughter) in 1977 and renowned bluesman Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown in 1981. Ellison relocated to Los Angeles by the mid-'80s, however, keeping his music career going by playing with the Box Tops, the Shirelles, the Coasters, and Peaches & Herb, and by the '90s he had formed his own blues band and opened for the likes of Joe Cocker, the Fabulous T-Birds, and Buddy Guy. It was also around this time that Ellison began issuing solo albums, including the titles Chains of Love and Live at Joey's. Shortly after returning back home to Tulsa, Ellison issued his third release, Steamin', followed by One Step From the Blues, which featured several other Tulsa musicians backing him. In addition to solo records and playing with other artists, Ellison has also penned songs that have appeared in such hit TV shows as Sister Sister, Eye on L.A., and the soap opera Santa Barbara, as well as the soundtrack to the Ben Affleck motion picture Reindeer Games. In 2001 Ellison issued his first release for the Burnside label, Cold Hard Cash, produced by longtime Robert Cray producer Dennis Walker.

Legendary guitarist/vocalist Guitar Shorty is a giant in the blues world. Credited with influencing both Jimi Hendrix and Buddy Guy, Guitar Shorty has been electrifying audiences for five decades with his supercharged live shows and his incendiary recordings. Like a bare knuckled boxer, Shorty strikes with his blistering, physical guitar playing and his fierce vocals, connecting directly with body and soul. What really sets Shorty apart is his absolutely unpredictable, off-the-wall guitar playing. He reaches for sounds, riffs and licks that other blues players wouldn't even think of. Amazon.com says his guitar work "sounds like a caged tiger before feeding time. His molten guitar pours his psychedelicized solos like lava over anything in his path." The Chicago Reader declares, "Guitar Shorty is a battle-scarred hard-ass. He slices off his phrases and notes with homicidal fury. He is among the highest-energy blues entertainers on the scene." Through the years, Shorty has performed with blues and R&B luminaries like Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, B.B. King, Guitar Slim and T-Bone Walker. He started playing with these legends while still in his teens and recorded a handful of singles for a variety of labels and an obscure LP during the first 30 years of his career. After decades of paying his dues (like so many unheralded American bluesmen), it took a tour of England to establish Shorty's fame in his home country. His recordings since then all received massive critical acclaim, and his renowned live performances have kept him constantly in demand all over the world. His 2004 Alligator Records debut, Watch Your Back, became his best-received, best-selling album to date. His 2006 follow-up, We The People, won the coveted Blues Music Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album Of The Year.

After graduating in 1966 from UC Berkeley with a degree in philosophy, and after some time in graduate school at San Francisco State College, Nathan Spooner spent the years from 1970 to 1975 making his living in Berkeley and San Francisco as a street musician.
Between 1975 and 1985 he worked in Alaska as a guitar player and backup singer in night clubs, a commercial salmon fisherman during the summers, and as an on-call stevedore for Local 62 along the waterfront in Ketchikan. Some years after returning to California in 1985, he began reworking the notes he started in 1963 and had kept through his travels to Alaska and Oregon and back to Berkeley.

THE MUSTANGS are a breath of fresh air on the British blues scene. They combine the power and punch of traditional R’n’B with great original songs and a show-stopping stage set. They have established a formidable reputation as one of the hardest-working and most charismatic bands in British blues. The Mustangs are led by the stunning voice and slashing guitar of livewire frontman Adam Norsworthy. The razor-sharp rhythm section of Jon Bartley (drums) and Ben McKeown (bass) is the tightest on the circuit. The line-up is completed by R’n’B veteran Derek Kingaby on vintage blues harp. The Mustangs formed in Hampshire in 2001. They immediately started gaining rave reviews in the blues press, with writers hailing the band as the country’s brightest new blues talent. News of their deft song-writing and hunger for playing live soon spread. Since then the Mustangs have headlined stages all over the UK, from the Great British Rhythm and Blues Festival to the legendary Hackney Empire. They have toured the length and brea
dth of the country, playing alongside giants of the British and American blues scenes. In the last few years the band has also started taking their unique brand of blues rock to ecstatic crowds on the European festival scene.
