On "High, Wide & Handsome", Big Nick and The Gila Monsters have dug their claws deeply into the early styling's of T-Bone Walker and B.B. King. Also added to the nest are four all-new original tunes and a surprise bonus track.
John “Big Nick” Samora has been playing in Phoenix for the last 20 years. He is the lead singer and harmonica player in his band, Big Nick and the Gila Monsters. They are one of the finest Blues bands in Arizona, and have been together for the past 16 years.
Mike “El Rey” Lewis is the guitar player and he is considered one of the finest players in Phoenix, having cut his teeth with Chuck Berry in the late ’60’s after starting Phoenix Area Blues bands in their High School days with James Mason.
A Phoenix treasure, Bass player James “Muddy” Mason has been the cornerstone of dozens of landmark acts in the Phoenix area since the mid ’60s.
Together since 1994, the stability of this group has been one of it’s hallmarks. Bobby Whiteshoes, the founding drummer, passed the sticks to Pro drummer, Ricky J. Lockhart, after retiring in 2004. Ricky has picked up the torch, laying down the solid grooves this great Blues band is known for.
With 5 self produced CDs under their own label, Monster-Tone Records, these guys are the real deal.
James Mason passed away in 2011 at the age of 61.
Bobby Whiteshoes passed away in 2017/

Chris had a big break as a session player came when he was asked to sub for the world famous and most recorded drummer in music Steve Gadd at age 16 in 1978. Chris has built 4 recording studios and has amassed a huge client list and credit list as Producer, Label Owner, Multi-instrumentalist and now video Producer and ai music and video technology trail blazer.
Although well known as a multi-instrumentalist/producer, Chris is also well known for his blazing ability on guitar when after many years of producing records, he released several highly acclaimed blues records (Top 15 Billboard charting) on his own label Modern Voices. Chris has also spends time guest conducting for various National Symphony Orchestras such as The Louisville Orchestra, Toledo Symphony and the Arlington Symphony. He has also arranged all the Herman’s Hermits hits for symphony and acts as Peter Noone’s Musical Director for all of his symphonic shows. Through his success as a Solo Artist, Producer and Label Owner, he has gone on to have over two dozen top 20 Billboard hits and his Modern Voices Label was named a TOP 10 Indie Label by Billboard in 1997. He parlayed that success into a Major Label distribution deal with Island/Def Jam. Chris, as a musician and businessman, has always been ahead of the curve. Back in 1981 he was already refining the home project studio and fifteen years later he foresaw the demise of the brick and mortar music business. Thus, he decided to focus strictly on Digital Distribution and create and promote Digital Content. He created a digital store and website in 1995 at a time when the music industry was not ready for such a new business model. Chris was honored by Berry Gordy (Past President/Founder of Motown Records), who called on Chris to arrange and perform an impromptu medley of “America the Beautiful” and “Lift up Your Hearts and Voices” for opera star and actress N’kenge at President Obama’s 2009 Commander-In-Chief Inaugural Ball. Chris also played for President Trump at the 2017 Inaugural. He has shared the stage with Bon Jovi, Peter Frampton, Josh Groban, Smokey Robinson, Ann Wilson and many others. He sits on the Board of Directors for the charity “Rock and Roll For Children”, and performs every year at their yearly Charity concert event and auction. Chris founded Modern Voices Distribution which is distributed by Sony The Orchard and co owns and runs the company with his colleague and life long friend John Tabacco.

Guitar Not So Slim - Bailout

Bitrate:320K/s
Year:2011
Time:30:52
Size:70,9 MB
Label:Gaztelupeko Hotsak
Styles:Blues/Electric Blues/Harmonica Blues
Art:Front

Tracks Listing:
 1. Bailout - 5:18
 2. Adarveing - 4:50
 3. Never Be Younger - 2:48
 4. Thank You Sir - 3:52
 5. Is That You? - 4:59
 6. I Wanna - 5:25
 7. What`s It Gonna Take - 5:40
 8. They`re Doing Fine - 5:26
 9. You Call It Lazy - 3:38
10. La Pequeña Nur - 4:28

Guitar Not So Slim is a band, not a person. Not only that, one does not often associate Spain with blues music, but here we have a Spanish band lead by an ex-pat Canadian, which offers a brand of blues that they, and everyone associated with the band, can be justly proud of. They bring you right-on music, steeped in blues and Americana, which, when you hear this CD, will leave you asking for more. The band features Troy Nahumko (AKA Troy Chandler) on guitar and vocals, Canadian by birth with a long history (going back to age 17) of playing blues and working with top musicians in North America; Moi Martin on bass and vocals, who has an equally long history of working with blues bands in Spain (and is the co-producer of this CD); Jose Luis 'Harmonica' Naranjo playing harp (he also plays trombone) who brings sounds of jazz, west coast swing and even flamenco to his harmonica work); and, all round percussionist with enormous experience of all kinds of back line work, Lalo Gonzalez on drums. The album is infused with and enlivened by some sensational piano Hammond work from Jim McKaba, from Jacksonville FL , plus some horns and some additional piano organ Rhodes piano work by some great Dutch musicians. The album is Troy’s inspiration and bearing in mind that blues music has always been a source of social commentary and protest and, given that the bankers have brought Europe to its knees in much the same way as in north America, railing about the bailouts and the consequent austerity measures, is fully justified. The album allows Troy also to point to the current obsession with plastic surgery, consumerism and (bringing it home) the alleged laziness of Spaniards. On a personal level Troy gives us two instrumentals Adarveing (pronounced Ar-dar-vey ing) which is a catchy guitar-led piece about the street on which Troy lives, Adarve del Cristo in Caceres, en Espana, and, La Pequena Nur (Little Nur), Nur being the name of Troy’s newly born daughter. There are many examples of dazzling musicianship on the album, Is That You…”I’ve Been wondering is that you”, comes with a terrific arrangement complete with super keyboard break and a driving horn section; Never Been Younger is worth listening to for the sax solo(s) alone; They’re Doing Fine sounds like Jimmy Reed in the 21st Century, comes with a fabulous piano part and is like a re-energised version of Reed’s, When You’re Doing Alright.

L.R. Phoenix - The Hollow Log of Capt. Richard Wolfe

11. The Devil - 3:14
12. Death - 3:24
13. Heaven - 3:11

"The Hollow Log Of Capt. Richard Wolfe" is the 3rd album I have received from L.R. Phoenix of which the other 2 were L.R. Phoenix & Mr. Mo'Hell "Jumper On The Line" and L.R. Phoenix & Mo'Hell "Wrecked". Both of those albums received my highest rating of 5***** and of which "Jumper On The Line", I said, "L.R. Phoenix & Mr. Mo'Hell know how to play the blues and they do so with a Raw and Unique Style that is very refreshing, almost primevil in nature. They draw on their Rawness and Uniqueness from one the best and that is L.R. Burnside, for whom they have even been referred to as his Reincarnation ".  Mr Mo'Hell is not on "The Hollow Log Of Capt. Richard Wolfe", but that doesn't mean that the talent on this album is lacking, far from it, as L.R. Phoenix has gathered together perhaps the best European talent around. Joining L.R. on "The Hollow Log Of Capt. Richard Wolfe" are Andres Roots (Electric Guitar, Dobro, Slide Bass, Tremolo Guitar, and Percussion), Raul Terep (Percussion, Drums), Indrek Tiisel (Harmonica, Jew's Harp), Peeter Piik (Upright Bass, Fretless Bass, Bowed Bass), Martin Eessalu (6 String Banjo), Asko-Rome Altsoo (Bass Drum, Additional Instrumentation), and Hanno Maadra (Viola). L.R. Phoenix did Vocals and Acoustic Guitar on all Tracks, as well as, Axe and Grunts on Track 7 "Down South". "The Hollow Log Of Capt. Richard Wolfe" was recorded at White Room in Tartu, Estonia. Estonia, for those who don't know, is just below Finland, across the Finnish Gulf. It is bordered on the East by Russia, the South by Latvia, and the West by the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Riga. Many, if not all the artists on this album, reside in either Estonia or Finland. L.R. Phoenix, whom now lives in Finland was born in England. "The Hollow Log Of Capt. Richard Wolfe" was Produced & Mastered by Andres Roots, L.R. Phoenix, and Asko-Rome Altsoo.
"The Hollow Log Of Capt. Richard Wolfe" consists of 13 Tracks of which he unabashly says on the back of the CD Cover, were "written, borrowed & stolen by L.R. Phoenix ". L.R. Phoenix does not offer up any song credits in the CD Cover, but the write-up he sent me indicated a wide variety of Artists whom he based some of the songs on, as well as, which one were Covers. Songs based on other Artists included, Hollow Log (Fred McDowell), Bedroom (John Lee Hooker/Canned Heat), Crying (Based on Blind Willie Johnson's "Lord I Just Can't Keep From Crying Sometimes"), The Cypress Grove (Based on the words from the Skip James recording), Down South (Based on R.L. Burnside's "Going Down South"), Death (Based on Son Houses's "Death Letter/My Black Mama" with a "bit of Willie Brown and Charley Patton thrown in for good measure"), and Heaven (Based on a song he first heard played by Fred McDowell "Wished I Was In Heaven Sitting Down"). Songs of which were versions of others included Blind Lemon Jefferson's "Jack Of Diamonds", Bukka White's "Po' Boy", and Skip James's "The Devil", in the style of Bentonia, "a sub-genre of blues music or a style of playing it ". Three of the songs on this album are Phoenix originals and included "Morning Train", "Hobo", and "Streets Of Lohan".
One thing is an absolute certainty when it comes to L.R. Phoenix and the music he plays, and that is, it is simply drenched in pure honest to goodness blues authenticity, both in lyrics and in the style of the music played. It is a type of blues that takes you back, way back, to when blues was simple. "The Hollow Log Of Capt. Richard Wolfe" keeps that simplicity and authenticity throughout which each Track only featuring the minimum number of artists to get the point across, whether it be Track 3 "Cryin'", which has only L.R. Phoenix, Track 6 "Cypress Grove", which has only L.R. Phoenix and Andres Roots, or Track 5 "Morning Train" which has 5 performers playing on it. Another example of Pure Authenticity comes across on several of the Tracks in which he plays with a Pocket Knife, for Slide affect, as did the original artists.
In addition to the songs on "The Hollow Log Of Capt. Richard Wolfe", L.R. Phoenix also offered up great descriptions of how he came to choose those songs in the CD Booklet and those are not just little snippets of info, most of the info on each song is 3 or 4 paragraphs long, and a very interesting read.
Picking 3 favorites off of "The Hollow Log Of Capt. Richard Wolfe" was not easy because the whole album comes across as a cohesive journey instead of a bunch of unconnected songs, but a few that were slightly more interesting to me than the others, were, Track 1 "Hollow Log", Track 4 "Jack Of Diamonds", and Track 5 "Morning Train". "Hollow Log" got my attention right of the bat with it's hypnotic Guitar Riff throughout. I loved "Jack Of Diamonds" with the great Banjo work of Martin Eessalu and once again the great Guitar work from Phoenix who uses a Pocket Knife for a great Slide feel. "Morning Train" was my favorite Track and really felt like you were on a train with the help of Indrek Tiisel's superb playing of Harmonica and Jew's Harp. This song is loosely familiar to Johnny Cash's Orange Blossom Special, one of my favorites.
Every now and then, and mind you not to often, an album crosses my path that really deserves to be in the Must Have category, "The Hollow Log Of Capt. Richard Wolfe" is such an album. "The Hollow Log Of Capt. Richard Wolfe" is Old Style Blues played with immense authenticity, in the tradition of L.R. Burnside and beyond.
All in all, "The Hollow Log Of Capt. Richard Wolfe", was and will be for the foreseeable future, a great addition to the CD's I play regularly.
5***** For "The Hollow Log Of Capt. Richard Wolfe"... This one gets better every time I listen to it...~ Review by John Vermilyea (Blues Underground Network)/

Cassio Albernaz & Amigos do Blues - A Long Way to Be Here

Cássio Albernaz is a guitarist, singer, and songwriter from Porto Alegre (RS), recognized as one of the most prominent exponents of the new generation of blues in Brazil. With a solid national and international career, his musical identity combines the rawness of traditional American blues with the richness of influences from Brazilian music, reggae, and rock. Born and raised in Porto Alegre in the 1980s, he discovered his passion for music in the Porto Alegre samba tradition, between rehearsals at the Beija-Flor do Sul samba school, run by his great-uncle Jorginho Oliveira, and samba circles at Banda da Saldanha in Ceará Lanches, in the Menino Deus neighborhood. "These are my earliest memories of seeing music happening as a living Black cultural expression. That visual and auditory impact marked me decisively." My first encounter with the instrument happened unexpectedly, when I found a broken guitar in the basement of a childhood friend's house. “Restoring that guitar became an obsession. The next challenge was figuring out how to play it, at a time when access to information and teaching methods were extremely scarce.” Initially self-taught, he soon expanded his horizons by practicing with other friends during his adolescence. Later, he refined his technique and theory in guitar lessons with Edilson Ávila and Júlio Herrlein “Chumbinho”, two of the greatest guitar references in Porto Alegre. Although immersed in different musical genres during his adolescence, such as reggae and rock, the definitive turning point came in the early 1990s, guided by an aesthetic awakening and the impact of Stevie Ray Vaughan's album Texas Flood . “It was summer and I was at the beach with my cousins. We went to a store to buy heavy metal records, like Metallica and Iron Maiden, which were all the rage among teenagers at the time. When I entered the store, Stevie Ray Vaughan was playing. I froze. I immediately told the clerk that I wanted that record and everything else he had in that style. It was love at first listen.” Thus, seeking the language and origins of the Blues became a life purpose and a way to unleash artistic expression.

Blues band The Blue Eyed Devils (A San Francisco Bay Area artists): those guys used to play out at the historic Pioneer Saloon in Woodside, CA and absolutely bring the house down with a floor-stomping, sweaty, hours-long brand of live blues that sounded like a bunch of 80-year-old Mississippian dudes on a back porch but was really a handful of white guys in their ’20s. It was epic. The floorboards would literally shake. The Blue Eyed Devils  have now disbanded.

Text: Eric Campfens(September, 2011)
Following their excellent debut album, *Somewhere Down The Road* (2008), and exciting performances both at home and abroad, expectations for the second album were high. This was due in no small part to Mariëlla herself, who kept us regularly updated on their progress. Indeed, when it comes to PR, Mariëlla is a star.
To recap: the band is built around Mariëlla Tirotto (vocals) and her husband Heins Greten (bass and piano). Rounding out the lineup are guitarist Harald Koll, harmonica player Michel de Kok, drummer John Kakiay, and percussionist Onny Tuhumena.
Lying before me now is their second album, *Dare To Stand Out*. Of the twelve tracks, eleven were written by Mariëlla, Harald, and Heins—either individually or in various collaborations. I particularly appreciate that the lyrics to the original songs are included in the booklet. And, just as with the first album, the songs deal with subjects close to their hearts; these tracks are even more personal than those on their debut.
The opening notes arrive with Harald’s blistering guitar licks and Michel’s blues harp. What an intro—it instantly grabs your attention. "Drifting" is a rocking blues track in which Harald really cuts loose on the guitar during the first solo, while Michel handles the second. Mariëlla’s rich, deep voice glides over the tight rhythm section, creating a pleasing tension. A great start. “Marked For Life” is another high-energy blues track with dark lyrics. The harmonica adds an extra dimension—not just during the solo, but especially in the quiet middle section, where it delivers a plaintive, wailing tone. The tempo drops drastically for “Lover’s Dance,” yet the track is no less thrilling. This almost atmospheric song left your reviewer needing a cold shower and a lie-down; suffice it to say, it was intense. Things pick up the pace again with the title track, an anthem encouraging listeners to chase their dreams and stand up for themselves—all driven by blistering guitar work and a driving harmonica.
“Night Owl” is an upbeat rocker featuring equally spirited solos from Michel and Harald. The next track, “Black Coffee,” is the album’s only cover. It is a standard penned by Burke and Webster—famously performed by the likes of Peggy Lee, Ella Fitzgerald, and Sarah Vaughan. It’s a laid-back number featuring Heins’s jazzy piano; he adopts a “less is more” approach during the solo, creating the perfect mood by allowing the music to breathe. Michel’s restrained playing rounds it off beautifully. The swinging “You Don’t Call The Shots” is defined by a driving bassline and surprising tempo shifts. Musically—thanks in part to Harald’s guitar—it evokes the jazzy rock style of Steely Dan... until Mariëlla breaks into a rap towards the end. Unexpected, yet thoroughly enjoyable. With “Why Are You Running From Yourself,” we leave the jazz excursion behind and return to straight-up rock. It is an almost menacing track that erupts into a percussion and drum solo, followed by a razor-sharp, lightning-fast guitar solo.
The most personal song, Mariëlla told me, is “Lover.” She wrote it specifically for Heins—a beautiful ballad with lovely, deeply personal lyrics. “Didn’t Your Mama Tell You” is another great rocker with a cautionary message. The album concludes with two instrumentals written by Harald: “Embrace I” and “Embrace II.” The first—partly due to its Latin rhythm—is reminiscent of Santana in his prime, while the second picks up the pace, featuring a prominent duel between drums and percussion, framed by harmonica and swinging piano work. Personally, I found this a somewhat unusual way to close an album by a band with “blues” in its name; I had expected a high-energy blues track, though after listening to the album a few more times, I feel it actually fits quite well.
Mariëlla Tirotto & The Blues Federation have lived up to the very high expectations and released another excellent album. I’ve played it several times already, and I still can’t get enough of it. Congratulations on this achievement. Highly recommended!

~ Website: https://www.java-webster.com/

The Cinelli Brothers are a dynamic 4-piece band from London, blending Soul and Blues with a contemporary twist. Their high-energy performances and multi-instrumental approach have made them one of the most exciting acts on the live circuit.
Vintage soul, modern energy and fearless musicianship: The Cinelli Brothers have become one of Europe’s most exciting live acts.
Formed in London by brothers Marco and Ale Cinelli, the band has built a distinctive sound shaped by vintage soul, electric rhythm & blues, rock’n’roll, gospel and the warmth of classic analogue recordings — fused with the energy and attitude of a modern live act.
Their music is raw, soulful and cinematic: groove-driven songs, powerful vocal harmonies, roaring guitars, harmonica, deep-pocket rhythms and an unmistakable live chemistry that moves effortlessly between intimate storytelling and explosive stage energy.
Alongside Marco and Alessandro, Tom Julian-Jones and Jorma complete the line-up, forming a rare kind of modern band: four multi-instrumentalists constantly exchanging instruments, lead vocals and musical roles on stage. Guitars become drums, bass turns into harmonica, frontmen become sidemen and back again — creating performances that feel spontaneous, unpredictable and completely alive. Since the release of their debut album Babe Please Set Your Alarm in 2018, The Cinelli Brothers have developed a reputation for records made with character and live shows built on pure connection. Their breakthrough album Villa Jukejoint, recorded at home using a minimalist analogue approach, established the band as one of the most exciting acts on the European roots circuit. Later releases expanded their sound even further, blending vintage influences with a broader, more contemporary vision.
