The Badweather Blues Band (BWB) is a hard working, electrifying, energetic quintet, who has had the honor of performing their brand of blues, classic R&B, and funk for the past decade. Their critically acclaimed self titled CD "Badweather Blues", released in October of 2007, was proof that the band could transfer their raw power and soulful energy from the stage to the recording studio. Calling the Southern Tier of New York their home, BWB has enjoyed an enthusiastic following that supports their busy schedule of club and concert appearances. Armed with the powerhouse vocals of Debbie "Hop" Hospie, plus the soulful rasp and melodic falsetto of Bob, "Sonny Boy" Jenson, vocal harmonies soar. The quintet is rounded out by the rhythm section of bassist Tom "The Ringer" Westcott and the funky drummer himself, Steve "The Hurricane" Simmons. Matched with the instrumental dominance of the Mike "The Reverend" Melynk's crafty keyboard prowess, listeners will be taken to another level of "holiness". As audience members can attest, BWB's love of music and enthusiasm for performing comes across at each and every live venue. In addition to gracing the main stage at the Chenango County Blues Festival in 2005 and at the New York State Rhythm and Blues Festival in 2007, the Badweather Blues Band has performed and shared the stage with some of the following national acts: Bernard Allison, Rod Piazza & the Mighty Flyers, Hubert Sumlin, Roosevelt Dean, Michael Hill’s Blues Mob, Big Al and the Heavyweights, Buddy Guy, Jerry Pornoy, Ronnie Baker Brooks, Oteil and the Peacemakers, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Duke Robillard, Renee Austin, Kenny Neal, Joe Bonamassa, Alexis Suter, Renee Austin, and Crosby Loggins.

Dutch singer and songwriter Phil Bee couldn't sit still during the Corona time. He used the 'lockdown' to lock himself up in the 'Castle Studios' in Mheer for 4 weeks to record this CD. This time no own work, due to the Corona situation and therefore the impossibility to rehearse, arrange and physically meet.
A repertoire was put together in collaboration with musician friends. Phil Bee had also asked his social media which songs were preferred. The result is this album with 10 songs that are on Phil's own bucket list and on those of his social media followers. His first solo album too, with a clear focus on the vocals. “I've never spent so much time on my own vocals for an album,” says Phil himself. The album was also recorded to fill the void of missing dozens of performances. Phil was in the middle of the theater tour with Johan Derksen when all events were canceled and the summer festivals with Phil Bee's Freedom and Erwin Java had yet to start. “Don't whine and stay positive” is his motto. The result: 'Against the Wind'. Songs with a zeitgeist from the 60s-70s of the last century. Classics with their own twist from the acclaimed Dutch blue-eyed-soul singer.

It is a familiar tale - a wily veteran performer schools a young musician until the student gains the confidence to head off on his or her own. This apprenticeship period serves two purposes by not only imparting valuable instruction on the art of making music but also providing lessons on living the musician’s life out on the road. The process has been repeated over and over again, ensuring that the musical traditions are passed from one generation to the next.
Gary Sellers had Sam "The Bluzman" Taylor as his mentor. Taylor was a highly regarded singer, guitarist and songwriter who was a fixture on the Long Island, New York blues scene. Elvis Presley, Freddie King, Joe Tex and other well-known singers recorded Taylor’s songs. Sellers shares Taylor’s ability to mix soul and blues elements into a heady brew of music that takes an honest look at life’s ups & downs.

Taboo Blue - The Wrath of God and a Plymuth Fury III

 3. The Wrath of God And a Plymuth Fury III - 2:44

12. Shangalang Ding Dong - 3:31
13. For the Love of You - 3:58
14. The Wrath of God (reprise) - 3:36

The title of Taboo Blue's fourth album conjures up visions of a band that play the blues in the sort of style favored by bands like The Gun Club. These first impressions are false, however. "The Wrath of God..." turns out to be much gentler on the ear, mostly alternating between rockier material and rootsier Americana. The album opens with "Steel Rail" where all the impressions conjured up by the albums title and the sleeve get blown away. It chugs along nicely, and the nicely restrained guitar work shows off the rockier side of the band. Their other side is displayed on track two, "So Bad," which is much more laid back and slower. The tune has shades of earlier Bob Dylan to it, whilst the slightly smoky vocals hint at Steve Forbert. The title track of the album (which is also reprised as a closer) initially reminded me a bit of the Stranglers, mainly due to the way that the keyboards provide the foundation and drive the tune along. Subsequent listenings, however, suggested that the Doors are probably a better comparison, particularly after listening to "Paint The Kettle Black" which also has some of the feel of early British blues boom about it. The band seem equally at home whether they are playing more upbeat numbers, or going for a more laid back feel. The songs on the album are almost evenly split between the two basic styles, so with a bit of careful programming you could even listen to the different styles individually. Of the rockier tracks, the dark and broody "Feminine Side" with its tasty slide guitar is probably the best. From the more laid back songs, the Tom Waits-like "Boys Ain't Poison" is very good, but pipped by "No One Most Know" which has some particularly good keyboard and piano playing on one of the best Dylan tunes that he never wrote. "The Wrath of God and A Plymouth Fury III" is a good album. Taboo Blue almost seem a bit Jekyll and Hyde-ish with the two fairly contrasting sides to their music. The album should hold some appeal for fans of either (or both) styles. It is testament to the skills of bandleader and songwriter Leon Laudenbach that the two styles work so well when placed side by side, to make the whole album so coherent.

Então comprei uma gaita Hering Super 20 e comecei a me virar”, lembra.

Robin Overall - Shadowlands

What is it about growing up in the Texas music scene that inspires so many guitar players to wield their guitars like weapons and make an impact on the world? Guitarists like Billy Gibbons of ZZ Topp, Eric Johnson and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Maybe it is something in the water or in the air that evokes such legendary feel for the instrument. Whatever the reason, the list would not be complete without Robin Overall's name on it. Described by Music Columnist Jim Beal as "Guitar Slinger Deluxe", Robin is emerging as a force to be reckoned with set apart from the hordes of SRV clones by a style all his own. This Texas born guitarist is poised for a 2006 Tour to support the release of 2 upcoming albums. The "Shadowlands" album which will be released in the summer is an amazing journey of guitar laced rock lightly seasoned with a jazz/fusion edge and "Firebird" which hopes to see a September release is a combination of new studio tracks and live recordings of a few songs from "Shadowlands". The "live" performance is really where he catches fire and you begin to understand that you are witnessing something very special. His soaring guitar solos seem to actually be calling out to people from blocks away to come and experience it. But the thing I enjoyed most about this guitarist was his commitment to the song. He is actually a good songwriter and vocalist. I never got the feeling that the evening was centered around a guitar showcase of endless and ultimately boring scales or that the songs were constructed solely for that purpose. Robin has a way of pulling you in slowly with variety, taste, and feel. He doesn't dump his complete knowledge of the guitar on you in the first solo in the first song. He is more like a Pied Piper slowly weaving his way through the songs and although he does give you an occasional blistering flurry of notes you really get a sense of freshness from song to song. At the end of the performance you won't have the ear fatigue common in many guitar hero shows. After two encores and non-stop accolades from the audience of about 300 people for this opening act I began to ask myself..."Who's the headliner now?" If you get a chance to see Robin "live" don't miss it....this Firebird can really rock you!

 7. My Truck My Dog My Wife - 3:50
 8. Leave Me the Same Way You Came - 4:18
 9. Mojo Hand - 3:28
10. Murder Murder Murder - 4:49

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Sugar Is My Name, by Sugar Harp and it's a solid release of classic blues sound. Opening with title track, Sugar Is My Name, Alabama harmonica player/singer Charles "Sugar Harp" Burroughs works over a cool, Little Walter vamp. Backed by Microwave Dave Gallagher on guitar, T-Bone Dupree on bass, Ardie Dean on drums, this is a solid opener.  On slow blues, How Come My Dog Don't Bark, Dan Hoctor provides a nice organ base with Dean on drums and Dupree on bass allowing wide open passage for Sugar to solo on harmonica. Very cool. One of my favorite tracks on the release is I Don't Want A Soul Hangin' Round with it's simple bottom by Microwave Dave on guitar and just the simplest of bass and drums by T-Bone and Ardie. Sugar has a great story telling vocal pace and his harmonica playing is super. Getting a blues rock feel going with Microwave Dave setting the pace on Lemon Squeezin' Fool, Sugar really shines on both vocal and harmonica making this track another favorite. On a smooth, slower blues, May Your Soul Make It To Heaven, with a "Stormy Monday" pace, Sugar lays down some really nice harmonica lead and his vocals work really nicely over the rhythm lead of Dave and the warm organ fill by Hoctor. Very cool. Sugar's vocal are at their peak on Leave Me The Same Way You Came with only the minimal amount of guitar by Dave and Sugar punctuating his own super vocals with his best harmonica work on the release. Wrapping the release is Murder Murder Murder is a strong, slower blues again featuring the excellent vocal work of Sugar. Dave's guitar lead provides a solid pathway for Sugar's soulful vocals and works very nicely with Sugar's soulful harp lead. Very nice.

When Canadian guitarist and singer Lou began playing back towards the end of the sixties, he was influenced by Jeff Beck, Johnny Winter, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, and Mike Bloomfield, so it should come as no surprise that he describes the music he played as ‘rocking blues’. Fast forward a couple of decades (during which time he played with a variety of bands playing a wide range of music) and he adds Albert Collins and Stevie Ray Vaughn to the list, before discovering the music of Robben Ford a little later. This set finds Lou backed by a skin-tight outfit of organ, bass and drums, plus a couple of hornmen and a backing singer, and he defines this CD as a return to his roots. Hopefully that initial paragraph should give most readers a good idea of what to expect: the set opener ‘Beer Drinkin’ Mama’ is an attractive, totally accessible, guitar driven, good-timing opening blues (very nice backing vocals) and the next track ‘You Said’ seems about to follow the same course, with its riffing guitar intro - but then it takes off into a slightly different direction, with jazzy licks emphasised by some dirty trumpet playing and even a flute! Some of the material is rather more conventional, including the powerful shuffle ‘Tell Me ‘Bout Your Problem’, the straightforwardly jazzy blues ‘Dibs On You’ and the classic riff-riding blues-rocker ‘Burn Me Down’. These are however offset by items such as the funky big band sound of the instrumental ‘Struttin’, and rather less successfully to my taste, the country-ish, showbizzy ballad ‘My Baby Blue’. The proceedings wind up in admirable fashion with the cool slow-to-mid tempo strut of ‘Ten Minutes’. Full marks to Lou for a varied and always interesting CD, with plenty of excellent guitar work and a raft of intelligent, original songs. This is well worth checking out. ~ Norman Darwen
