"Cranked Remastered" collects early material from Rated Blue's first two albums "Three Walls Down" and "Turnabout" in freshly enhanced and remastered versions. These tracks literally thunder with intense attack and raw power and make no secret of the bands love of heavy roots and blues in a power-trio context. Though the band may tip their hats to a music form strongly associated with a bygone era the songs themselves have lost none of their political bite and even after almost 10 years they are still as topical as today's headlines. Seeing a need to cast these early recordings in a more polished context guest keyboardist Dave "Benny" Williams was enlisted to bring his tasteful shades of color to sweeten and balance the sonic gut-punch that is Rated Blue's hallmark. This set collects the strongest songs from both albums and presents a new version of "Waiting" stripped down to a revealing acoustic solo performance. The MacArthurs (junior and senior) with stellar bassist Peter Cox pay profound respect to their root inspirations while managing to revitalize the form with fresh musical ideas. If you missed these songs the first time around you will be rewarded with a second chance and an optimized listening experience in this new collection.

Ben Poole is an internationally applauded, award-winning blues, rock and soul guitarist, singer and songwriter hailing from the United Kingdom. Nominated as one of the “Best Blues Guitarists in the world” just prior to the 2-year pandemic hiatus alongside names such as Eric Clapton, John Mayer, Buddy Guy, Robert Cray, Joe Bonamassa & many more by the USA’s ‘Guitar World Magazine’, Ben Poole is very much at the forefront of the talent rich blues/rock scene on a worldwide scale.Set in the beautifully stunning and musically prestigious city of Montreux, Switzerland, this show was certainly one of the biggest highlights (of which there were many!) from a very busy 2022. The year saw us performing at some amazing venues and festivals, across 17 countries in various formats, and on both sides of the Atlantic. But as we move towards the summer of 2023 I have to say that on reflecting over the past 12 months this night in particular really stands out in my mind. Not only did I feel like the period of time around the MIGS show really marked a turning point in live music returning after the 2 year “hiatus”, but everything about this night in particular was simply magical! The energy from the audience was palpable, and only led to the energy already emanating from the boys on stage increasing ten fold! One of the only shows where we added keys to the otherwise usual trio line-up; Matthew Gest added some wonderful textures and glorious harmonies to proceedings. The band, featuring Steve Amadeo on bass guitar and Chris Hardwick on drums, really stepped up on that evening and I am so proud of the result. Add to this the wonderful people, the gorgeous venue and the great sound, it is no wonder we have all been so excited to share some of this night with you all!”.

John Earl Walker - Come Over Here!

Bitrate:320K/s
Year:2008

 8. The World's A Prison - 4:18
 9. Poor Boy Blues - 6:36

Guitarist, lyricist, and vocalist John Earl Walker became enamored with the blues at age 13, after being exposed to records by legendary guitarists of the genre such as Albert King, Magic Sam, T-Bone Walker, and Freddie King. By his 16th birthday, Walker had already begun playing guitar at local events and in clubs whenever possible. In 1967 he formed the blues-rock band the Plastic People, which included bassist Pete Harris and guitarist Joey Tremelo. Three years later the Plastic People changed their name to Plum Nelly, recorded several albums for Capitol Records in the mid-'70s, and gained national exposure opening shows for B.B. King, Muddy Waters, Alice Cooper, and Iggy Pop, to name just a few. Following the breakup of Plum Nelly in 1976, Walker formed the first of several incarnations of the John Earl Walker Band. The most stable lineup was initiated in 1990 when former Housepainters drummer Bobby Infante was added, joining Harris, Tremelo, and Walker. They released their debut CD, I'm Leaving You, in 2002, followed by Little Miss Perfect and People Are Talkin' two years later.  “Come Over Here” is the fourth album from John Earl Walker and in my opinion the best. John and the band have served up ten scorchin’ original tunes.  The styles range from hard hitting rockers to slow blues, classic rock and funk. I definitely recommend this album!

Walter Trout - Broken

 9. Breathe - 4:13
10. Heaven Or Hell - 4:43
11. I Wanna Stay - 4:36
12. Falls Apart - 4:02

Blues rock’s perpetual survivor, Walter Trout, maybe Broken in places, but not even the fractured modern world and personal hardships he’s endured have rendered him beyond repair. After taking us on a spellbinding Ride in 2022 (a record that placed highly in Blues Rock Review’s Top 20 albums of the same year), it’s apparent there’s plenty of gasoline left in the tank (even at 72 years young).Trout reels in a dozen original tracks (three co-writes with his wife Marie) and a bunch of first-time collaborators that include the electric-shock-through-your-veins pipes of Beth Hart. Through bruising guitar and a wry pour of gallows humor, the album starts with the title track, “Broken,” and finishes with one called “Falls Apart.” In between, it’s a mash of wrath and serenity, as the genre’s resilient icon “always holds on to hope” amidst the stain of dystopia. The opening anthemic duet with Hart is a match made in blues-rock heaven. Both artists share an unwanted parallel, which has seen them battle with inner demons that would have conquered other mere mortals. This extra resonance, combined with the grace and power of Trout’s guitar and Hart’s signature rasp and fragility, makes this a timely reminder about the healing power of top-drawer music.Trout never disappoints when it comes to down ‘n’ dirty blues, as he recruits the extraordinarily accomplished and inventive harmonica player Will Wilde for his thrilling first single, “Bleed.” They lock horns for a fabulous harp-driven boogie, with Wildes’s hard-edged harmonica almost upstaging Trout’s screaming solo. Once again, it’s a terrific example of two outstanding musicians delivering a cut greater than the sum of its parts. The theme of hope is apparent on the laid-back shuffle of “Courage In The Dark,” with Trout digging deep for the best solo on the album, bar none. While there’s room for a couple more ballads and even a country lane diversion on “Breathe,” the hard-edged moments served by Trout’s ferocious and passionate DNA remain untouchable and (ironically) unbroken.“Heaven Or Hell,” with its apocalyptic lyrical theme (“We get what we deserve”) and unexpectedly heavy chugging riffs, are underpinned by more melodic yet all-guns-blazing fretwork. The final collaboration on this album might be a surprise, but what follows is anything but. Starring Twisted Sister frontman and metal titan Dee Snider, Trout wants to rock, and Snider is more than happy to oblige with his powerful gruff on the adrenaline-fueled “I’ve Had Enough.” More glorious guitar work strikes in the immediate aftermath on the majestic instrumental “Love Of My Life.” It’s an effective counterpoint to the LP’s rock quota, resplendent with pedal harp, a string arrangement, and blues phrasing that touches every sinew.Arguably saving the best till last, Trout balances despondency and delight in the epic closer “Falls Apart,” — written and arranged by Michael Edward Brændgård Trout. Rich harmonies, soaring guitar work that goes beyond the clouds, and the revelation of the choral finale hold everything together. The terms “journeyman” and “stalwart” have been tossed at Trout over the years, but the man is simply a legend of the genre. Irrespective of the traumas he’s had to overcome, he’s a bloody brilliant guitarist in his own right, so let him fling some mud of his own back at the bitter schisms of modern life. This is his “escape from everything that is broken in the world, ” resulting in some of the most raw and black-and-blue songs of his career.Thankfully, this “elder statesman” of the blues-rock world refuses to succumb to the angst, instead throwing his heart, soul, and the proverbial kitchen sink into everything like he always has. And if it ain’t broke, why fix it?

Dan Patlansky - Movin' On

 5. On My Way - 5:25

 7. Baby’s Packin’ Heat - 8:18
 8. Welcome In - 6:12
 9. Free Wheelin’ - 3:58
10. Lift Off - 4:13

Over the past decade-plus, South African guitarist Dan Patlansky has been one of the most consistent performers in blues rock. His 2014 album, Dear Silence Thieves, was voted Blues Rock Review’s #1 album of 2014. 2016’s Introvertigo also landed Patlansky the top spot on Blues Rock Review’s annual list. Most recently, Patlansky released Shelter of Bones in 2022, which finished #2 in Blues Rock Review’s Top 20 Albums of 2022.Patlansky is an elite guitarist but one of the things that separates Dan from many other blues rock artists is his songwriting ability. When world class guitar playing meets strong songwriting you have a winning combination which Patlansky delivers. Now Patlansky is back with 2024’s Movin’ On which Dan co-produced with Andy Maritz. Greg Van Kerkhof also assisted with songwriting.Patlansky has made it no secret that Stevie Ray Vaughan has been a massive influence on him. Dan opens the album with “Red Velvet Suit,” an upbeat Texas styled rocker. Next up is one of the album’s top moments, “Who I Am” which is quintessential Dan Patlansky. The song is the perfect example of world class guitar playing meeting top-tier songwriting. Patlansky describes the song as “Rediscovering who I am as an artist and human being.” “Humbled” features more scorching guitar and is about the life of a touring musician. The album changes pace with the reflective title track about pushing through tough times. Another album highlight. Dan turns up the energy with the blues shuffle of “On My Way.” “One With Fire” continues Movin On’s theme of turning the page. “Baby’s Packin Heat” is a blues number that Patlansky wrote tongue in cheek about winning a woman over.“Welcome In” sees Patlansky head into a more mellow Americana direction with a bit of country flavor which he does very well. The groovy “Free Wheelin” is next and Movin’ On concludes with the fiery instrumental “Lift Off.” On Movin’ On, Dan Patlansky continues to demonstrate his prowess as both a guitarist and a songwriter. With each track, Patlansky’s influences and personal experiences shine through. Few artists in blues rock bring the total package like Patlansky.

10. When It's Gone - 4:00

Bex Marshall’s long-awaited studio album, “Fortuna,” is a testament to her unparalleled talent as a vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter. With ten tracks that traverse the vast landscape of blues, funk, rock, and Americana, Marshall delivers a sonic experience that is both raw and refined, gritty yet graceful. The album kicks off with the anthemic “Preaching to the Choir,” a no-nonsense guitar-driven track that sets the pace for the journey ahead. Marshall’s drawling vocals cut through the driving funk groove, accompanied by lofty gospel harmonies from Shola Adegoroye. It’s a politically charged anthem that demands attention and introspection.“Dirty Water,” a cover originally penned by Buddy and Julie Miller, receives a gritty reinterpretation from Marshall. The track begins with an acapella vocal before building into a tribal hambone, culminating in a crescendo of pain and promise. Marshall’s impassioned delivery breathes new life into this classic song, infusing it with raw emotion and undeniable energy. “I Can’t Look You In The Eye” showcases Marshall’s prowess on slide guitar, accompanied by Scott Coopwood’s soulful solo on a custom Les Paul. This four-to-the-floor blues number explores themes of lust and temptation, while Barry Barnes’ driving rhythm section lays the foundation for Marshall’s electrifying performance. The standout track, “5 AM,” captivates with its melancholic atmosphere and haunting guitar melodies. Toby Baker’s Rhodes playing adds depth to Marshall’s introspective lyrics, as she navigates the aftermath of a late-night confrontation. The song’s dramatic crescendo mirrors the emotional turmoil of the early hours, culminating in a poignant reflection on regret and resignation.“Jungle” brings a playful energy to the album, with slide guitar reminiscent of a kid skidding across a polished floor. Marshall’s humorous lyrics paint a vivid picture of a world where everyone is an animal or insect, inviting listeners to join in the toe-tapping fun of this rockabilly-inspired romp.“Fortuna,” the title track of the album, explodes with energy from the outset, setting the stage for a sonic adventure. Richie Stevens’ driving drums and Red Bass’ sensational bass harmonies propel the track forward, while Marshall’s resonator guitar dominates with its heavy funk groove. It’s a high-octane thrill ride that captures the essence of Marshall’s musical vision. As the album draws to a close, “When It’s Gone” offers a reflective moment of introspection. BJ Cole’s guest Dobro playing adds a haunting quality to Marshall’s acoustic guitar, as she delivers a poignant reminder of life’s transient nature. It’s a bittersweet conclusion to an album that balances raw emotion with unbridled energy.Overall, “Fortuna” is a tour de force from Bex Marshall, showcasing her growth as a musician and a storyteller. With its addictive hooks, soulful vocals, and blistering guitar solos, the album is a testament to Marshall’s enduring talent and tenacity. It’s a must-listen for anyone craving authentic blues-rock with a modern twist.

Rich is fashioning the new sound of the Blues on his debut CD TALKING TO SHADOWS. "The Blues is the great tradition of American music. It has been the common ancestor to all forms of Western music for the past 130 years. Rock, Jazz, Country, Bluegrass, Soul, even Rap and Hip-Hop owe their musical beginnings to the Blues. But the Blues, to survive a musical form, needs to keep evolving. That is what Muddy Waters and others did when they came from the Delta and plugged in electric guitars." Rich's music is a melting pot of Jazz, Funk and Rock all served on the plate of the Blues. The Blues are the foundation of his music. With the CD project TALKING TO SHADOWS, Rich has now returned to playing the music that captured his heart many years ago: The Blues. "This new project is like a new start. The Blues needs to move in a new direction, and the music on this CD is a step in that direction. It is Blues for the 21st century. To me it feels like coming home, comfortable like your favorite jeans or your favorite shoes."

There comes a time in the life of any amateur musician who has picked with a band or two over the years, cooked up some original jams on his own, and gotten to know all of the musicians in his neighborhood, that he’s accumulated enough material to put together his own CD. Such is the case with Glen Arbor’s own Bobby Jones. His release Arizona Princess shows that when Bobby’s not riding his Harley, he’s probably wailing on a Telecaster with the fuzz tone knob turned up to 10!By combining mostly original material with a few classics from some warhorses of the blues (Will McTell, Sonny Boy Williamson, Ellas McDaniel, even Sam Cooke), Mr. Jones manages to display his own finger craft and vocal virtuosity while featuring an all star cast of local luminaries including John Knight, Newt Cole, Tim Wire, Roger Tarczon, John Kumjian, and hornmen Pete Asch and John Lindenau, among others. There are some tracks recorded in 1989 and 1990, including a live cut from the Black Pearl Reunion show in Aspen, Colorado, as well as some newer stuff from the past few years. The CD gets right after it immediately with the high energy original Extra Sauce, featuring Bobby’s fuzzy guitar and a filthy wail from Newt Cole’s saxophone to get the stratospheric arc of these blues tunes off the ground. Many tracks feature Bobby Jones on guitar, bass, and vocals, and you can tell right away that you’re in the hands of an experienced blues man.His originals TC Shuffle, Bobby’s Blues, Need Some Lovin’ Tonight, Juzsumfunk, and the title track Arizona Princess also feature some outstanding piano from Tim Wire and the confident rhythm slants of Roger Tarczon. Jones has worked with the best local sound engineers to produce his CD, including Scott Zylstra of Frontier Studios in Copemish, John Knight of Full Circle Studios in Traverse City, and Patrick Niemisto of Holy Wah! Studio near Maple City.
Singer, teacher, author, actor, producer, and television host Bobby Jones was born September 18, 1939 in Henry, Tennessee. Always aiming for a career in music, Jones was an excellent student, graduating from high school at the age of 15, earning a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Tennessee State University by the time he was 19, and proceeding through his master's at the same university before taking his doctorate at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. Although he has taught elementary school, he is chiefly known for his work as a producer and host at the BET television network, where he began in 1980, hosting the popular Bobby Jones Gospel show. His many albums and musical collections include Sooner or Later (1978), There's Hope for this World (1979), Caught Up (1980), Soul Set Free (1982), Come Together (1984), Tin Gladje (1985), I'll Never Forget (1989), Another Time (1990), Bring It to Jesus (1995), Just Churchin' (1998), A Gospel Experience: Live in Italy (2004), Faith Unscripted (2007), The Ambassador (2007), and Rejoice with Me! (2014). He has also written and published two books, 1999's Touched by God and 2000's Make a Joyful Noise. ~ Steve Leggett

Mighty Sam McClain has been recording for many years and has an impressive back catalogue across a number of labels. In 2010 he recorded with Iranian singer Mahsa Vahdat and that is where he met Norwegian guitarist Knut Reiersrud. Knut has recorded in a very wide variety of contexts, including the blues and the two obviously hit it off, deciding to record an old-style soul album together. The recording was made in Oslo with an all Norwegian cast of musicians. The CD contains a mix of covers and original material written by Sam, Knut and his regular lyricist Jeffrey Wasserman. Most of the songs are gentle ballads. For example Jerry Ragavoy’s “You Don’t Know Nothing About Love” has some strong, pleading vocals from Sam but plods along for almost 6 minutes. “Learn How To Love You Again” has a touch of country ballad about it and some resemblance in the chorus to Kenny Rogers’ “Lucille” – personally I would have preferred BB King’s Lucille. The Reverend James Cleveland’s “I Don’t Feel Noways Tired” also has a country feel, even down to the spoken intro, though once the song proper starts it is clearly a gospel piece, emphasized by the churchy organ which also is a feature of the closing track “Open Up Heaven’s Door”. The most upbeat track here is “Love One Another” which has a far more active drum beat behind it but a dull and repetitive lyric.

If you like history then you have to meet Lightning Red! The man is history himself! He saw many of the big Jazz names when he was a kid, befriended Luther Allison, performed at the Armadillo World Headquarters, played with Omar and The Howlers, Charlie Sexton and WC Clark and watched how Little Stevie Ray struggled with his guitar!
Now with the release of the Groovemaster, Lightning Red, almost a blues legend himself, is on the road again and ready to show the world that he is still a master at the guitar! Killer licks, ditto grooves and trademark vocals are the master ingredients for his recipe.“Don’t Have to worry” is a fine example of his trademark vocals! The tune gives us his raw sound that is full and expressive! “Do The Revolution” is a great blues rocker that combines the burning hot guitar licks with the Texas blues style. “Lie No More” is all what the blues is about and on “Change is gonna come” (co-written with long time collaborator & guest vocalist LZ Love) we hear some nice slide guitar as well as LZ’s voice taking over the vocals in this duet! “The Shake” is wonderfully blending blues and soul in an instrumental groove that could fit on any seventies spy-fi movie! “No matter brings” back all the misery and trouble the blues has seen over the ages in this standard 12 bar blues tune. Closing down is a funky blues instrumental with a screaming guitar taking over the vocals! A very nice way to close an album that gave us 12 hot Texas blues tracks. The passionate guitar playing combined with some nice lyrics on the Groovemaster makes from this offering by Texas guitar hero Lightning Red a much appreciated album. The low-down funky shuffles with rockin’ boogies and elements of funk-driven blues creates an experience that you simply can’t Keep quiet.

Introducing Hope Waits—the debut release from enigmatic singer/songwriter Hope Waits—was released digitally July 26th on Spann Records. The debut recording from the Louisiana native brews up a sonic gumbo that will satisfy audiences' appetites for impassioned and beautifully handcrafted jazz-tinged blues music. In addition to the physical album's 12 tracks produced by Peter Malick (Norah Jones), the digital release includes two additional songs by the production team of David Kalish (Rickie Lee Jones, Nicolette Larson, Michelle Shocked) and Barrie Maguire (Amos Lee, Natalie Merchant, Wallflowers). From the sparse opening crescendo of brushstrokes on a snare drum, Introducing Hope Waits instantly seduces the listener with the lead track, “I'll Be Satisfied." Waits masterfully morphs the Berry Gordy-penned, Jackie Wilson track from an upbeat and up-tempo hit to a slow and sensuous torch song. Waits proves a masterful interpreter on this wildly diverse album that ranges from the supper-club purr of Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer's “Come Rain or Shine" to the roadhouse rawness of Don Robey's “Mother-in-Law Blues." Originals by Waits and producer-guitarist Peter Malick such as “Fortune Teller" and “The Ballad of Judith Anne" are imbued with a deeply personal sense of love and personal loss. While the David Kalish penned “I'll Be Home Tomorrow" is sure to invoke comparisons to Bonnie Raitt.“My life really changed through the whole process of recording this album," says Waits. “I was still living in the South, so I'd come to Los Angeles every couple of months and do some tracks, stay a week, and then come back later. I think it was a great way to do it—I just don't see how you can build enough emotion behind your songs if you're going into the studio with everything just ready to go." Recorded in Los Angeles at Chessvolt Studios and Silverlake's Redstar Recording Studio, Introducing Hope Waits also boasts an impressive roster of musicians including drummer Butch Norton (Wheels, Lucinda Williams), bassist Jeff Turmes (Mavis Staples, Janiva Magness) and veteran horn players David Woodford and Lee Thornburg. Waits' team of all-star musicians perfectly complement each of the album's 14 tracks—adding just the right touches of musical support, while still allowing Waits' evocative voice to always remain at the forefront.

The Chicago Kingsnakes were formed in 1983 by guitarist / vocalist James Anderson. He started playing guitar at the age of 8 on a homemade instrument crafted from a cigar box, rubber bands and thumb tacks. A lifelong resident of Chicago, he received his musical education on the city's infamous south side, where he played with the likes of guitar greats Buddy Guy, Lefty Dizz and Son Seals, harmonica legends James Cotton and Junior Wells and the Queen of The Blues, Koko Taylor. James has toured the nation with Sun, Chess, Bobbin, Stax and Malaco recording artist Little Milton. Anderson also played guitar with Johnny Twist's Rocka-Boogie Blues Band touring the midwest for three years. In 1992 The Kingsnakes befriended Byther Smith. The band has become 'Smitty's' road band and has accompanied him on tours of the United States, Finland, The Netherlands and Canada. In addition they played on Byther's 'I'm A Mad Man' CD on the Bullseye record label. On June 5th 1994 Byther Smith andThe Kingsnakes performed on the Main Stage of the 11th Annual Chicago Bluesfest in Grant Park. This friendship is sustained by occasional tours with Byther. The other musicians in the band have worked with such blues notables as Albert Collins, Freddie King, Lonnie Brooks, Otis Clay, James Cotton, Magic Slim, Cash McCall, and Big Twist & The Mellow Fellows, just to name a few. In 1998 The Kingsnakes released a CD of original material entitled 'Blues Island' . The disk was very well recieved by the press. Blues Revue, a national blues magazine, called Blues Island 'Essential'. Chicagoland's The Beat, said 'Blues Island magnificently captures the live feel and heart of blues in a studio setting'. The Kingsnakes are poised to carry the blues torch into the 21st century by staying true to the music's traditions as well as writing new material to reflect the blues of today and tomorrow.
Fan's of no-nonsense urban blues will want to check out Blues Island (MusicKing 60653), The solo album from Byther Smith's sometime road and recording group The Chicago Kingsnakes. The first strains of guitar on this CD put me right into my favorite blues haunt where my imagination added clinking glasses, cigarette smoke, and the muffled sound of people milling about Blues Island magnficently captures the live feel and heart of blues in a studio setting - a feat I rarely hear. Too much polish can sometimes kill the energy that is the essence of the blues to me. You won't find "predictable" here. Throughout this whole release, The Kingsnakes let their hair down without getting sloppy or self-indugent with the solo stuff. On "Abandoned in Hammond" I'd imagine Tom Waits if he's gone blues. On some cuts, I'd hear a bit of early ZZ Top, but I'm stretching. There's quite a wide range of influences, yet Blues Island is uniquely Kingsnakes throughout.Bonuses are special guest Byther Smith's guitar work, and some wonderful Hammond B-3 sound contributed by guest Jeff "Wally: Walroth. The guitar all over the CD is excellent - not overbearing or showy, but letting James Anderson's down home vocals shine through.A little sax, a little slide, great vocals, lots of soul - how can this miss? The whole CD is top notch.

Blues guitarist Travis Haddix was born on November 26, 1938. A native of Walnut, MS, Haddix was inspired in his early years by B.B. King's broadcasts on WDIA out of Memphis. In Cleveland, OH, where he has lived since 1959, Haddix developed into a fine modern bluesman and songwriter with an original and soulful touch. While he had been developing his chops in front of rowdy audiences at juke joints and blues festivals throughout the '70s, he didn't begin his recording career in earnest until he signed with the Ichiban label in 1988. His stylish and poppy albums Wrong Side Out (1988), Winners Never Quit (1991), and What I Know Right Now (1992), were, incredibly, released while Haddix continued his job as a postal worker in Ohio. As his popularity continued to grow, he began traveling to Europe several times a year and won numerous blues awards in both Europe and the States. Haddix resumed recording in 1994 with Big Ole Goodun' and also began to develop his interest in other areas of the entertainment business including the formation of his own publishing company and his own record label Wann-Sonn Records. In 2002, Haddix even became an author, releasing Caught in the Middle, a book of his musical memoirs. A quote Travis Haddix uses to close out many of his performances sums up his positive philosophical attitude: "I am the best that I can be, and since no one else can be me, there's none better." ~ Jim O'Neal & Al Campbell
