One of the most prolific and most influential blues rock guitarists of the 21st century, Joe Bonamassa, has returned with a brand new studio album. Breakthrough, out July 18th, released via J&R Adventures, is the 17th addition to this living legend’s impressive studio catalogue. The new record contains ten fresh tracks either written or co-written by Bonamassa himself, while production credits go to Kevin Shirley. Speaking about the new release, Shirley said, “This album is a round-the-world musical trip—from Little Feat funkiness to Texas swing, from hard rock power to acoustic singer/songwriter-style songs.” Let the journey begin!
The title track, released as a single leading up to the album drop, starts out with a catchy bluesy chorus sung by Bonamassa in his signature gritty style accompanied by the guitar playing in unison with his vocal melody. Not 45 seconds in, Joe uses a gap between verse lines to rip a sweet guitar fill pampering our ears with that rich tone. Despite its lazy laid-back groove, “Breakthrough” is a truly empowering and uplifting track. Bit of wah in the main solo section doesn’t hurt either – a classic Joe B track. The driving force behind “Trigger Finger” is a captivating guitar riff, sounding as cheeky as the intro in Stevie Ray Vaughan’s “Wall of Denial”. This is further backed by a heavy rock drum beat adding fuel to the fire. The powerful backing vocals add warmth to the overall vibe and give anthemic qualities to the chorus. Sudden key change grabs attention, and Joe is sure to make the most of it with a wailing guitar solo. Nasty shuffle fills the air on “I’ll Take the Blame” – a proper old-school Texas-blues track. Skyrocketing the mood right through the roof despite singing about carrying a heavy load is a defiant and bouncy “Drive By the Exit Sign”. Such a variety of influences and qualities in this one. Blues-rock in its DNA, it’s got a country swag, funky rhythm, but it’s also got soul, and loads of it!
Slowing the tempo down is a song titled “Broken Record,” starting out with heavenly guitar and airy vocals backed by an atmospheric electric organ. The dynamics fluctuate throughout this slow number from delicate, stripped-down verses to choruses that hit you like a freight-train. Amazing guitar work as ever by Bonamassa, however, his vocals are the true crown of this ballad. “Shake This Ground” goes from moody to optimistic. This track is more pop / contemporary country / singer-songwriter than blues rock or any of the closely related genres. However, Joe Bonamassa delivers it with such conviction, he makes it seem like this is the style that he always plays. Amazing! “Still Walking With Me” marks the return to the upbeat vibes – the groove is so playful and inviting in this one it screams ‘let’s get this party started’ – dancing is non-negotiable at this stage (shoulders bouncing to the rhythm at the very least). Classic blues guitar licks spice it up even further. Another ballad ensues named “Life After Dark” – packed with emotion that’s brought to surface by Joe’s soulful singing, haunting backing vocals, screaming guitar bends and beautifully subtle piano parts. Ready for some high-octane blues rock? Thought you might be! The penultimate track called “You Don’t Own Me” is a dirty, greasy, fast-paced locomotive of a song! It’s electric! This crescendo leads up to the album finale “Pain’s On Me” – another late-night shuffling blues rock banger to wrap things up in style.
After more than 35 years on the scene, Joe Bonamassa sounds fresh as ever yet so authentic and instantly recognizable, a testament to his talent, skill, musicality, and overall love for what he does. Joe once again showcases his evolution as a songwriter, guitarist, and singer by creating another immaculate collection of timeless music. Breakthrough is an amazing record that promises to become a classic.
