Brian Kahanek starts his career as a guitarist well at the University of North Texas but soon discovers that he also learns a lot from playing in a club. After his studies he moved from Texas to California to perform there as much as possible. In 2004 his first album Real Life is released. Numbers two and three will follow in 2007 and 2010. After that it stays quiet for a long time in terms of albums, but finally here is album number four: 'Rise To Shine'.The album starts with a nice instrumental titled Daybreak, and it sounds that way. Brian Kahanek has several instrumental tracks on the album, some with a similar theme. After the start of the day, a kind of road trip with Southbound, a Midnight Waltz and finally Sunday Melody follow later on the CD. Personally, I think the first two, Daybreak and Southbound, are the strongest of the four. They all give a feeling, Sunday Melody is just a bit too fast as far as I'm concerned. So not a quiet Sunday. But songs like this are where Kahanek's real strength lies. He knows like no other how to let his guitar speak for itself. I wish there were more songs like this on the album. Especially since the album is only over thirty minutes long, so there is plenty of room. In addition to the four songs mentioned, there are two other instrumental songs on it: Copperhead, a heavy song with a lot of guitar and Cannonball Strut, which only lasts a minute and a half and is therefore over before you know it. Fortunately, there are also three other songs on the album where Brian Kahanek shows that he can also sing well. The first: Bad Blood is a heavy rock song with a very long guitar solo towards the end, and at five minutes it is also the longest song on the album. Retrograde comes right after Bad Blood and is a very nice ballad. Something completely different from Bad Blood and the aforementioned Copperhead which comes after Retrograde. I think the most beautiful song on the album is the title track Rise To Shine, a very nice song that can be played on the radio.
