In 1981, Tinsley Ellis formed The Heartfixers, a blues band with Chicago vocalist Bob Nelson. The group recorded 4 albums, which brought the guitarist the first fame outside of his state. On the 1986 album, he made his debut as a vocalist. Having gained confidence in his abilities as a soloist, he left The Heartfixers.
