Jerome Godbout:
Blues Harp (Harmonica), Singer - Blues Toronto, Canada.
Jerome has been a full-time musician since 1986, when he won an Ottawa Bluesfest contest that helped launched his career and triggered a move to Toronto. That was the start of the Phantoms and an inspiring time that took the explosive rock band to sell-out status in the city's top clubs from the Horseshoe to Lee's Palace to the Phoenix (then the Diamond). And even when the Phantoms reluctantly called it quits, Jerome never did.
He's headlined at the Montreal Jazz Festival (2005), played Toronto's Air Canada Centre with Ronnie Hawkins, opened for the Yardbirds and performed on stages across Canada, the U.S., France, Finland, Portugal, Ukraine, Israel and beyond. He's played with Prince, Pinetop Perkins, James Cotton, the Tragically Hip, Levon Helm, Billy Ray Cyrus and many more, and recorded and toured with the likes of Alannah Myles, Dutch Mason, Jeff Healey, Jimmy Bowskill and Suzie McNeil.
An accomplished and exceptional bluesman, his bending harp skills have been sought by everyone from Ronnie Hawkins to the late Jeff Healey and he continues to mesmerize all who witness him onstage including the judges at the International blues Challenge 2014 held in Memphis where Jerome took home the Lee Oskar best harmonica Player award. The one-time local legend of explosive 90s rock band the Phantoms, Jerome has released 14 albums in his 25-plus year career, 11 of which are solo.Jerome, who wears his trademark toolbelt with a harmonica in every key, stepped up his game even further on the instrument. He purchased an innovative 30-reed harmonica, invented by UK-based harmonica master Brendan Power.

Mark Olbrich Blues Eternity - Blues Everywhere

Bitrate:320K/s
Year:2017
Time:36:27
Size:84,1 MB
Label:Hrpp Records
Styles:Blues
Art:Front

Tracks Listing:
 1. Volcano - 4:27
 2. Hey Hey Mississippi - 5:58
 3. Texas Can Wait - 5:05
 4. Testify - 5:33
 5. Big Easy - 4:13
 6. Hammers - 5:32
 7. Torun - 5:36

Mark Olbrich is a veteran Anglo/Polish blues bass player with an impressive CV both that spreads right across eastern Europe to the States. Both the material and band is built round Olbrich’s rock solid and lilting bass lines and Eddie Angel’s expressive vocals and concise guitar work. Angel further teases out the emotion of a song through intense solos and tonal variation. And while this isn’t quite a band album as such, Olbrich has built his studio project round the core players of drummer Allesandro Cinelli – with a special mention for the great shuffle drummer Maurice McElroy who contributes an essential part of the boogie arrangement of ‘Hey Hey Mississippi’ – Eddie Angel and keyboard player Igor Nowicki.There’s also further contributions from Olbrich’s long time harp player and former Yardbird Laurence Garman who brings versatility and tone to his tracks. It all makes for a 7 track mini album full of deep grooves, boogie and of course the blues. As Mark explains in his liner notes, the album title is a reference to the many places he has ploughed his trade in as a blues bass playing band leader and booker, and more specifically how the blues has impacted on him emotionally and given him a context for the songs. The opening ‘Volcano’ is a very good example of how the Angel/Olbrich song writing partnership draws on personal experience to pen some contemporary blues. The song is about being delayed by volcanic ash in the middle of a tour, as a Texas style groove soon gives way to Eddie’s first solo on a seamless arrangement. ‘Hey Hey Mississippi’ is a harp led boogie that is reminiscent of the Bob Hite led Canned Heat. It has a relentless swagger that gives the song its impetus. They say that you should always judge a blues band’s credentials on a slow blues and Blues Eternity triumph with ‘Texas Can Wait’. It’s a narrative driven song that evokes a timeless, perhaps imagined journey through the Southern States. Garman adds country blues harp alongside Nowieki’s nuanced piano fills and McElroy’s brushed stroked rhythm. The 7 track album focuses on feel through some intricate band interplay that refreshingly always serves the song. In that respect ‘Texas Can Wait’ lives and breathes the wide open spaces that the lyrics evoke. Angel adds a clean toned and restrained solo which is the perfect foil for Garman’s harp. In sharp contrast, Angel’s close-to-the-mic phrasing on the heavy riff driven ‘Testify’ is a tough muscular outing with a thudding back beat. Angel’s angular guitar tone adds another sonic layer to a stretched out cut that will surely become a live favourite. It’s a good example of the way the band fuses the past with the present. The riff driven dual guitar theme could be the Allman’s, while the lyrics are cool word plays through which Angel emotes the blues. ‘Blues Everywhere’ musically mirrors the album title. It’s routed in deep blues traditions, but the music is contemporized on the band’s own terms with strong material and a fine performance. The evolving studio line-up somehow manages to stay true to core band imprint by adhering to the arrangements, while adding just enough feel to emphasise the bluesy aspects that glue the whole album together. There’s also a significant stylistic change on ‘Big Easy’, as Angel adopts a Johnny Cash baritone style of phrasing over John Eacott’s muted trumpet, on a song with a wide screen, spaghetti western flavour. And while the earlier ‘Testify’ makes a riff driven impact – think Martin Barre’s jagged guitar lines in Jethro Tull –  ’Hammers’ incorporates a whammy bar intro that ushers us into a lilting funky feel, over a Hammond back drop. The dirgy feel would surely make the late Jack Bruce smile – you could image Bruce singing this – but Angel adds his own rap style of phrasing to deliver the song’s meaning. ‘Hammers’ is arguably the most ambitious track on the album, as it searches for spark through an unusual descending chord structure, before resolving the tension with a fiery, intense and big toned Eddie Angel guitar solo. His vocal on the hook could almost be Paul Rogers, suggesting that when called on he has more to deliver.The closing ‘Toruń’ -  an ode to the North Polish city known for its Gingerbread - is an up tempo rocker on which features Eddie in his element on both vocals and guitar, while the Olbrich/Cinelli combination nails the bottom end. And there it is. ‘Blues Everwhere’ is a short, sharp and focussed celebration of contemporary blues. Moreover, Mark Olbrich’s Blues Eternity is a great barometer of the standard of blues on both sides of the Atlantic. They rock, they boogie, they get deep into the blues and they groove effortlessly on an album of original material that makes a significant impact ~  Review by Pete Feenstra

Matti Oiling was best known as the leader of the Oiling Boiling Rhythm 'n Blues Band. They backed a whole list of vocalists including Blues Mama, Brown Sugar Dixon and Caron Barnes, as well as top Finns Pepe Ahlqvist and Eero Raittinen. In addition to club concerts, the group often performed in churches.The highlight of Oiling's recording career was "Hip-Hop-Boogaloo-Blues" (2001), an album canned with Blues Mama Brown Sugar Dixon. It was the first-ever Scandinavian rhythm 'n blues album to reach the Gold Disc limit (a minimum of 20,000 units sold).A young Matti Oiling started his professional career with Onni Gideon, another Finnish legend, who was - strangely enough - the leader in Hawaiian-influenced music in Finland. A little later Oiling joined a Beatles-inspired pop group Jormas.
"Let the good times roll" was the name of the game soon after. Oiling recorded a landmark LP "Happy Jazz Band" with his own ensemble in 1970 -- a career in rhythm 'n blues had started. The beloved Oiling Boiling Rhythm 'n Blues Band toured extensively both home and abroad, earning nicknames like "Finland's R 'n B National Team" and "University of Rhythm". Mr Oiling himself, in the spirit of the Dukes and the Counts, was often called "The Emperor". Gene Krupa and Earl Palmer were among Matti Oiling's biggest influences. Palmer was also a good personal friend of his.
"There have been drummers before us, and there will be after us. We are just a link in a long chain of drummers", Matti Oiling used to teach his fellow drummers and drummers-to-be.

In 2018, singer/saxophonist Leroy Ellington assembled a group of music veterans near Cincinnati, in southwestern Ohio, under the name Leroy Ellington’s Sacred Hearts. Alongside Ellington, the group includes Mike Grosser (bass), Marcos Sastre (guitar, vocals), Max Gise (guitar), Charlie Fletche (keyboards, vocals), and Rick “Bam” Powell (drums, vocals). Ellington has been involved in music for three decades. He began his career in the 1980s playing with Ritchie & The Students (a doo-wop band with several hit singles in the late 1950s), led by frontman Richard Johnson. Their biggest hit was "I'm So Young," covered by The Beach Boys and featured on the soundtrack of the film "Cry Baby." In the 1990s, Leroy joined Stacy Mitchhart's band, Stacy! & Blues-U-Can-Use, as a saxophonist. With him, he recorded "Blues Transfusion" in 1993, for which Ellington wrote several songs. In 1994, Leroy Ellington started his own band, Leroy Ellington & The E-Funk Band. This band was an important part of the Cincinnati music scene for over twenty years.In 2012, Ellington started The Leroy Ellington Band (as a side project). They were second at the 2012 Cincinnati BC and second at the 2013 Dayton BC. In 2016, they released the EP "Blue Eyed Blues," an album that was named "Best Self-Produced CD" by the Cincinnati Blues Society in 2016. In May 2015, Ellington was a guest vocalist with the Kentucky Symphony Orchestra, which paid tribute to the music of Chicago & Blood, Sweat & Tears. Ellington sang songs by the legendary Canadian BS&T singer, guitarist, and pianist (now 78!) David Clatyon Thomas. In early 2018, Leroy Ellington began his latest recording project, Leroy Ellington’s Sacred Hearts. "Sanctified" was his 2019 debut album. It's more than just a blues album, and the song selection draws on Ellington's career.

The contemporary blues environment combines a traditional manner of storytellin' with up-to-date elements that ring true at first listen. David Jacobs-Strain delivers his message with convincing authority. Surrounded by a band that features blues harp and fiddle, exotic percussion and fiery keyboards, the singer/guitarist brings it home. His slide guitar work stands out as one of the best.Jacobs-Strain has been playing guitar since age nine. But that was only twelve years ago. At 21, he's in his third year at Stanford University. The bluesman's originals dig into today's societal standing. He deals with issues common to all of us. Like folk artists in the '60s, he knows what's on our minds and sings about it. Our fears and our heartaches are laid bare. It's comforting. An emotional singer, Jacobs-Strain communicates easily. Like the boy next door, he tells it like it is. The session lets his voice take center stage. Blind Willie Johnson's "Soul of a Man" allows for a return to the roots of blues storytellin', with the acoustic sounds of washtub drum, soulful harmonica, clinking chains, and earthy background vocals. Jacobs-Strain's slide guitar tells the story as well as his vocal picture does, however, as he relates with bottleneck efficiency. He follows that soulful piece up with an instrumental "Yelapa Breakdown" that takes his audience off on a different adventure. Through his music, this young singer/guitarist has seen the world from many angles. His recommended blues album speaks well for his generation and ours.

Musicians:
Carol Band: keyboards,vocals & harmonica;
Poogie Bell: drums (Nitro);
Allyn Dorr: bass & vocals;
Jared Egan: guitar (Sharkskin Suit);
Joe Egan: keyboards & manuscripts;
James Gildea: bass & vocals;
Paul Giovine: drums & percussion;
Adam Sankowski: bass guitar;
Conrad Warre: guitar, bass, vocals, trumpet,
kaossilator, strings & keyboards.

Hailing from Boston, Bees Deluxe have toured up and down the East Coast to present the sounds from their imagination. Recorded in a studio “hidden in the forests of Massachusetts,” the band took a year to produce a dozen new songs in response to demands from their listeners. Mixing Chicago blues and a heavy dose of psychedelic rock, the album is certainly eclectic and different.
The Bees Deluxe liken their music to a genre called acid blues, a bluesy version of acid rock. The All Music Guide writes, “Acid Rock was the heaviest, loudest variation of psychedelic rock. Drawing from the overblown blues improvisations of Cream and Jimi Hendrix, acid rock bands relied on distorted guitars, trippy lyrics, and long jams. Acid rock didn’t last too long — it evolved and imploded within the life span of psychedelia — and the bands that didn’t break up became heavy metal bands.” That pretty much sums up the sound and feel of this album.
The band is Carol Band on keys, vocals and harp, Allyn Door on bass and vocals, Joe Egan on keys and manuscripts, James Gildea in bass and vocals, Paul Giovine on drums and percussion, Adam Sandowski on bass, and Conrad Warre on guitar, bass, vocals, trumpet, kaossilator, strings and keys. A couple of other musicians are noted where they appear.
“Sharkskin Suit” starts us off. It’s a little bouncy and has a 1970’s vibe to it. Jared Egan adds his guitar to the mix which gives the song depth. “When Is Yesterday” is a trippy, slow cut with somber vocals and guitar work. We get a little distorted harp thrown in late in the piece. “Another Close Shave” follows, a thoughtful cut that makes me feel like I’m perhaps listening to Dire Straights on hallucinogenic drugs.
“Scared” takes us on a journey that evokes a mix of Pink Floyd and LSD. Band takes us on a journey of depression and fear as he sings and Warre plays some ethereal, trippy guitar. Up next is “Queen Midas” which takes us with acoustic guitar added to the mix. Warre also adds some cool cupped trumpet along with nice electric guitar and a cool organ line, too. “How To Play 96 Tears” follows with some elegant piano in this cool instrumental number. Replacing the Farfisa with a piano and taking us in new directions, it’s a slick cut.
“Nitro” is next and features Poogie Bell on drums. More breathy vocals and a jazzy approach with horns and guitar setting a nice tone in this explosive tune. “Call Me Frank” is next, a dreamy guitar piece that gets a harp added that finally introduces the vocals. The harp returns for some extended, dreamy sounding stuff. “Men & Women” is next, more dissonant stuff that ambles along to a slow to mid-tempo groove and ethereal guitar.
“Gary Burton’s ex-Guitar Player Stole My High School Girl” follows, a heady instrumental fronted by acoustic guitar and an overall heady feeling. “Houdini” changes things up with breathy vocals and a nice electric guitar lead. The album concludes with “What’s Wrong With Me?” This one’s a song that the vocals search for what is wrong with the vocalist. Striving to find himself after likening to being hit by a falling tree, we get another heady cut with interesting guitar lead and soloing.
This album is not something to sit down to listen and chill with. The album presents wild, imaginative themes and images that take the listener on a sometimes disturbing and always interestin/

With the new surge of Southern Soul music, group leader Nelson Curry thought their concept and style would be a perfect fit in that music scene.
The group members Include Nelson Curry, Wayne Bowman, Curtis Knight, Allen Curry and Derrick Thomas.
Curry decided to start his own label Neo Blues Music giving his group a home to write and produce their own music.
According to Curry we are defined as the bad boys of blues because we intend to shake a few things up and have a good time. Bowman states we call our style of Southern Soul fish and grits music or Guvment drinking music.
The name change from Le Klass was our wanting to remember all the members we use to have and the brotherhood we all shared in this journey of music. Southern Soul playlists began showing "Sugaa Shack" and the song steadily became one of the most popular songs of the year. "Out of the Shadows Of Soul" the first LP followed.

This recording is a piece of history. Recorded live in March 1982 at the historic White Eagle in Portland, Oregon, the Pete Karnes Blues Band with guitarist Tom McFarland was as close to a house band for the White Eagle as it got, and this was a great night! You can hear the enthusiastic crowd, and can feel the vibe of a great band in this historic club. Little did anyone in the band realize that the recording made on a cassette recorder sitting on top of a Leslie speaker would resurface after 32 years! Two of the band members from that night have passed on: Tom McFarland and Nick Christmas, may they rest in peace. The remaining members are still playing! Pete Karnes is keeping the blues alive in Florida with his current band. Northwest favorites also heard on this recording are alive and well and playing with many other musical projects: Richard Englund on bass, Doug Smith on sax, and Michael Mendenhall on keyboards. Blues Hall of Fame harmonica master Pete Karnes played with many of the Legends, Big Walter Horton, Willie Dixon, John Lee Hooker, Robert Lockwood, J.B. Hutto, Lightning Slim - you can hear the authenticity in his voice and playing. Pete Karnes is a blues harp master, committed to Chicago Blues. Born in Pigget, Arkansas, Pete grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan. As a teenager he moved to Detroit with his family for his dad to work in the growing automobile industry, where he would be exposed to all the great blues harmonica players from Chicago. You can hear Pete's tribute to many of these masters on the CD in the song, "Jimmy Reed Medley". During the 70s and early 80s, Pete fronted the Pete Karnes Blues Band in Portland, Oregon. In the mid-eighties, he ended his music career to devote himself to the family. In the late nineties he became seriously ill, but since 2006 has been active again, playing the blues like never before! This CD will transport the listener back to those heady days when the White Eagle was Portland's premier blues venue. The great atmosphere and late night excitement created by the Pete Karnes Blues Band at the White Eagle on this March night in 1982 comes across loud and clear when you listen to this CD. Enjoy the great music, and wonderful history, that this CD offers! Pick up Pete's other CD, "I'm Still Here", as well to round out an excellent collection of blues from one of the real blues harmonica masters, Pete Karnes. "Live at the White Eagle 1982" was originally recorded in March 1982 on a stereo cassette recorder. The cassette was digitized and mixed by Michael Mendenhall at Ba Gua Studio. CD was mastered by Don Ross at Don Ross Productions.

Musicians:
Paul Gerdt - Vocals;
Dave O'Donnell - Guitar;
Mike Buckman - Bass;
John Ginty - Keyboards;
John Hummel - Drums;
Dave Hedden - Percussion.

In his 30-year career as both musician and producer, Ginty has toured and recorded with an array of artists such as Neal Casal, Citizen Cope, Santana, The Chicks, Whiskeytown, and literally hundreds more.more. John was a founding member of Robert Randolph and the
Family Band where he garnered two GRAMMY nominations during his time with the band.
Here's a live double disc that doesn't wear out its welcome. In fact, with a total running time of 88 minutes, you could even argue that Fireside Live isn't long enough. But veteran keyboardist John Ginty (whose resume includes employment by everyone from Jewel to Santana to Bad Religion) doesn't need to fill Fireside Live with 140 minutes of music to satisfy both faithful fans and new listeners. The 11 tracks here, recorded live at a New Jersey club in October 2005 with Ginty's crack four-piece band and vocalist Paul Gerdis, reveal a man who doesn't shy away from letting other players grab the spotlight. Sure, there's plenty of flavorful fusion propelled by Ginty's Hammond B-3 ("Savor," "Point A"), but Fireside Live also crackles with electric blues ("Done Somebody Wrong"), manic percussion ("Calypso"), memorable jamband-style vocals ("Faith In His Name," "Arizona") and searing guitar work ("Departures," "Arrivals"). The audience is mixed in low - to the point where some applause is barely audible - giving the album a live-in-the-studio vibe that's often hard to capture in the studio.

Cassius King and The Downtown Rulers - Last Call For The Blues

 2. If You Love Me - 3:51
 3. Feel Good Music - 4:08
 4. Better Man Blues - 3:18
 5. Last Call For The Blues - 4:06

Cassius King has chosen to spend the past 25 years toiling for others in the control room to support his family rather than to pursue his own music career. But one listen to this traditional blues disc will prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that stardom truly was awaiting him if he’d only taken the chance.Based out of Southern California, he’s an expressive, powerful vocalist who shines on keys here with equally impressive backing by the magnificent Chalo Ortiz on guitar, Chris White on bass and J.R. Lozano on drums.It isn’t often that you’ll find an EP in this blog, but this one is definitely worth the space. Composed of four originals and one cover, give Cassius a listen as he debuts with “Do It All Again,” “If You Love Me,” “Feel Good Music,” “Better Man Blues” and “Last Call for the Blues.”
Opening with Do It All Again, Cassius King is strutting with solid vocals and keys, and complimented by Chalo Ortiz, Chris White on bass and J.R. Lozano on drums. With just the right amount of backbeat and vocal blend and tasty riffs by Ortiz, this is a strong opener. If You Love Me Like You Say is a really cool track with a good hook and real radio potential. Ortiz knows how to ride the groove and can really put the sting in the right place. Very nice. Lozano drives the train on Feel Good Music with his funky drum rhythm and Ortiz plays stinging accents under really potent vocals by King. Another winner. Wrapping the release is title track, Last Call For The Blues with it's ballad format. Excellent vocals by King and rick guitar lead by Ortiz make this and excellent closer.

The Bradley/McGillivray Blues Band is a group of seasoned pros who've spent the last many years blending blues, jazz, Motown and gospel into their own hip, soulful sound. Founded by vocalist Ruth McGillivray and guitarist Sheldon Bradley, this band is not just a collection of players, but a unit that listens, writes, records and performs together. Ruth's knock-you-flat vocals and Sheldon's tasty guitar are rounded out by an inventive rhythm section featuring bassist Paul Freeman, and drummer Hoto Parker. Through groove, improvisation and raw, unadulterated emotion, the Bradley/McGillivray Blues Band ('BMcG' for short) takes listeners on a journey rarely heard in today's image-driven music. They play with authenticity, whether it's an uptown jazz shuffle, gritty Mississippi blues, or New Orleans funk. Influenced by artists like Warren Haynes, Robben Ford, Susan Tedeschi, Janis Joplin and Etta James, they've built an impressive repertoire of original music and 'twisted covers' (familiar tunes played in unfamiliar ways). There's no gimic or hype in a BMcG show--just smokin' music, passionate delivery, and cool, clever tunes. They're a band of music lovers connecting with an audience of music lovers, and everybody has a lot of fun...which probably explains why veteran players, discerning listeners and critics are the band's most dedicated fans. The thing that really makes this band different is the combination of a powerhouse singer like Ruth McGillivray and jaw-dropping guitarist like Sheldon Bradley sharing center stage. After Ruth's voice has sent shivers up your spine and left the hairs on the back of your neck standing up, Sheldon steps forward and takes you on his own mesmerizing journey. You won't forget it once you see it. BMcG has just released their second CD, 'Livin' This Way'. This CD, produced in Vancouver, B.C. by award-winning, veteran producer Bill Buckingham, features nine original songs, their own unique, blues version of Tennessee Waltz, and a bonus track included by special request, Piece of My Heart. Their first CD, 'River of Soul', featured their first collection of original material and was released in September 2003. This debut project received critical acclaim, 4-star reviews, and a nomination in the Jazz/Blues category of the Shai Awards.

Slinky & P'tit Loup - Movin' on

 7. Sweet mama - 3:15
 8. You're a no good man - 3:03
 9. Danser le swing - 2:40
10. Tipitina - 1:58

Slinky Williams and her life partner, P’tit Loup (French for Little Wolf), are an enigmatic pair of string players who lay down a funky mix of acoustic blues with a light, breezy feel no matter what the source of their material, which ranges from New Orleans funk to Duke Ellington and modern blues. Background information on the duo is sketchy at best. They’re veterans of the European music scene, and are based in Germany despite their roots, which appear to be French and American. Slinky handles most of the vocals while adding mandolin, while she and P’tit Loup double on guitar and percussion. Partners in life as well as on stage, they’ve been making music together since 1972, when they worked in Folk Omnibus, a trio influenced by the folk music movement in Great Britain.They produced two subsequent LPs with the band Gurnemanz before switching gears to play world music and one disc with the band GAIA. They played rock and jazz during the ‘90s before forming the blues-rock unit, The Xperts. They’ve been working as a duo for the past few years, serving up heaping helpings of old-time blues, swing and jazz while demonstrating prowess on the fretboard. And they recorded Movin’ On at home. Since laying down these tracks, they’re now working with a bass player when on the road.
First up is a cover of Art Neville’s “Cha Dooky-Do.” It’s a tender love song that’s enhanced by Slinky’s alto vocal, which glides from note to note. P’tit Loup answers her lyrics with work on electric guitar. A straight-ahead acoustic version of Jimmy Vivino’s modern classic, “Beat Up Guitar,” follows. The duo’s playing is never forced and slightly behind the beat, driving the music forward.A cover of another Crescent City standby, Doctor John and Doc Pomus’ “Dance The Night Away With You,” is delivered with an old-time feel as Slinky and P’tit Loup deliver it as a duet. A pair of originals follow. “Movin’ On” provides a platform for each of the artists to deliver a vague verse about their own mysterious origin before teaming up for the chorus, while “The Girl With The Broken Heart” features Slinky on vocals and mandolin in a modern number with a throwback feel.Louis Jordan’s “Early In The Morning” follows with the familiar refrain “…and I ain’t got nothin’ but the blues…” before the duo make Ellington’s “Sweet Mama” their own with an acoustic blues presentation. Two more originals — “You’re A No Good Man,” a minor-key blues, and “Danser Le Swing,” delivered in French, — follow before a cover of the Professor Longhair standard, “Tipitina,” closes the set.

Formed in 1991, the band has evolved through many incarnations and trips around the world as far as South Africa and mostly the joys of playing a lot of music on Martha's Vineyard where most of them live. Johnny juggles a full life where he takes advantage of his many skills including stone masonry, fishing, antique dealing, farming. Somehow he manages to do all the gigs as well. He came to the Island in 1978, after soaking up Muddy Waters' and Tom Waits' shows as a teenager.
Buck Shank, guitar, longtime member of the band, looks and sounds like he's playing his last solo every time he steps up. He brings so much emotion, joy and grit to the stage, and his rhythm playing helps drive the bus.
Jeremy Berlin, the piano player has been with the band for most of its life - since the summer of '93. He's played duets with President Clinton, and Carly Simon - he's not afraid of anything, and he plays it all. The band started out as a four-piece with no piano, became a five-piece for several years, and then returned to a four-piece configuration, this time with no bass, and it's been that way for over 10 years. They even play as a three piece without guitar. Jeremy's connection with the Island started before he was born and he's been there on and off ever since.
Chris Anzalone, the drummer, came aboard in 2000, a veteran of the Boston scene and such bands as The Radio Kings and he and Jeremy have been the rhythm section all along. He stays around Boston - we can't make him move down here. A real city boy. We call him Baby Dynamite.

11. The Street - 7:26
12. Skin Deep - 4:51

This is a "must have" album for blues guitar fans or anyone who loves really great music - the guitar work is just spectacular! As an added bonus, Billy's songwriting is advanced and quite compelling, well beyond the typical 1 - 4 - 5 chord changes. This also requires a lot more of a vocalist and Thompson is up to that challenge as well. It all comes back to the guitar playing though, and every song is an opportunity for Thompson to display his considerable talent and marvelous tone.

“‘Tangerine Sky’ certainly deserves a place in any record collection. ”

“Billy Thompson is not following in anybody’s footsteps on his excellent ‘Tangerine Sky’. ”

“His charismatic technique and dirty tone delivers a consistent barrage of spicy licks and scorching leads”

Babaux and the Peacemakers - Keep Both Hands on the Wheel

 6. Release Yourself - 4:10
 7. Take the Hand that I'm Given - 2:59
 8. Keep Both Hands on the Wheel - 4:44
 9. Something More to Give - 3:40

"Keep Both Hands On The Wheel" is the third release from Colorado based Babaux and The Peacemakers. The nine song set clocks in at 36 minutes with lots to offer fans of blues and roots music. It is the first release for the band on Guitar One Records and it is as solid as it gets. The band is led by Christian Basso (aka Babaux) who serves as the singer/songwriter and resonator guitar man. The Peacemakers are Eric Martinez on lead guitar, bassist Mike Davidov and drummer Jake Herman. To say the least it is a very competent outfit.
Steal You Love is the first track on the album and sets the pace for what is coming down the pike. The band has as much blues in them as they do anything else, but it's not a straight blues act by any means. This cut has strong shades of southern rock in it. Hints of The Allmann Brothers and the deep cuts of Lynyrd Skynyrd are quite apparent. Not so much the hits that have become part of the soundtrack of many of our lives, but the hidden gems that lie on the B sides! The songs that die hard music fans always gravitate to.
Speaking of the deep cuts... Take The Hand Given embodies that label impeccably. This 3 minute track is an absolute home run on every level. It is soulful and performed with patience and 100% conviction. The band lays deep in the pocket and moves gracefully from a whisper to a roar working the dynamics as hard as can be. The performance is quite loose without ever feeling like it's going to fall apart, walking that tightrope between solid and liquid as well as anybody can.
After multiple listens to this release the second track Hardly Living is the one that catches this writer's ear as the cut that embodies the overall vibe of this release. The band again is sitting in a deep pocket creating a fantastic pallet for a smoky unique vocal performance. Many singers force the raspy vocal out that seems to be just a relaxed delivery from vocalist Babaux. It makes me wonder if he's been smoking three packs of unfiltered Camel cigarettes since kindergarten. Whatever got him to this place is clearly working.
This album, just like their previous two releases, offers the listener something that is not only good, but quite unique and instantly identifiable. There is no shortage of  good bands, but a tremendous shortage of ones that are different. There is a patience and maturity to this band that is special. They have so many ingredients in the mix that it is hard to imagine a fan of any roots music wouldn't find something here to like. They embrace the WHOLE roots sound with both feet in the blues, jam bands, americana and pretty much anything else that came from the southern american music scene of the last 60 years. There are hints of Laurel Canyon influences in the songwriting, but Babaux and The Peacemakers are far more soulful. The presence of the slide guitar and deeply raspy vocal throughout brings it much closer to the Muscle Shoals sound than anything that came from west of the Mississippi. This is a band of old souls and this album is the strongest of their three releases.
I highly recommend giving it a listen! ~ Luke Wolk

New Album: James "JB" Barnes - "My Mississippi Roots"
"When I listen to My Mississippi Roots, you can tell we had fun and enjoyed what we’ were doing. There’s something for everybody on MMR. Its blues-rock, soul-based, and will take you on a soulful emotional roller coaster ride -- from traditional blues-feeling songs to '70s rock in the vein of Hendrix, to Retro soul. There is a common thread throughout, and that’s the blues!  - Anthony Krizan, Musician/Producer. James Barnes — known to audiences throughout the region as JB — carries the blues in his blood. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, and raised in New Jersey after his family moved east in 1965, he grew up steeped in the sound and spirit of the music. On his father’s side, JB traces his lineage back to Mississippi, the wellspring from which so much of this tradition flows. Those “Mississippi Roots” became more than just family history; they formed the bedrock of his artistic calling. JB didn’t come to the blues casually. He studied the greats —those who laid the path before him, those who continue to shape the form today. That study became devotion, and in 2016, the New Jersey Blues Hall of Fame recognized that devotion, honoring him as a “Great Blues Artist.” His first recording, JB’s Favorite Things (2023), established him as an independent artist with something genuine to say. His long-running band, BBD Rhythm & Blues, which he founded in 2012, has been carrying that message across clubs, festivals, and concert halls throughout New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Delaware for more than a decade.JB’s mission is plain spoken yet profound: to honor the artists who came before him while ensuring the blues remains vibrant in the present. His latest project makes that mission personal. My Mississippi Roots, due to be released on October 17, 2025, is more than a record — it is a testimony. The title track tells the story of JB’s father, Jerry Lee Barnes Sr., a man of quiet determination who journeyed from the deep South to the industrial North in search of work and a better life for his family. “His Mississippi Roots,” JB says, “are my Mississippi Roots.” Produced by guitarist, songwriter, and longtime friend Anthony Krizan, My Mississippi Roots combines JB’s storytelling with contributions from a host of musicians —including his son, Jarred “Arktkt” Barnes — whose playing brings fresh fire to the tradition. The record traverses the landscape of the blues and beyond: original compositions, heartfelt tributes, and reimagined classics all rendered with conviction. From the introspective ache of “Gotta Make a Change” to the celebratory groove of “The JB Shuffle”; from the political bite of “When Did Crime Become Legal” to the reimagined soul of “Sara Smile” and the deep homage to Carey Bell in “Lonesome Stranger” — Krizan was masterful with co-writing several of the originals along with providing some great heartfelt blues guitar playing throughout the entire record. These songs embody both personal narrative and cultural continuity. For JB, keeping the blues alive is not about nostalgia — it is about honoring roots while growing branches. With My Mississippi Roots, he extends his family’s story into the continuum of blues history, reminding us that the music is as much about where we’ve been as it is about where we still hope to go.

Rosco N. Gordon III (April 10, 1928 – July 11, 2002), the youngest of eight children, was an American blues and rhythm and blues singer, pianist, and songwriter from Memphis, Tennessee, renowned for his distinctive "Rosco Rhythm"—an offbeat piano shuffle that emphasized the upbeats and profoundly influenced early rock 'n' roll as well as Jamaican ska and reggae music.
A self-taught pianist who learned from his sister and drew inspiration from blues crooners like Charles Brown and Percy Mayfield, Gordon emerged on Memphis's vibrant Beale Street scene in the late 1940s as part of the loose collective known as the Beale Street Boys (later Beale Streeters), alongside future stars such as B.B. King, Bobby Bland, and Johnny Ace. In 1950, he won a talent contest at the Palace Theatre, which led to his first recordings in 1951 with pioneering producer Sam Phillips at his Memphis Recording Service (later Sun Records), where Gordon's laid-back, shuffling style helped bridge jump blues and the emerging rock sound.
Gordon's breakthrough came in 1952 with the "#1 R&B hit Booted," followed closely by the "#2 R&B single No More Doggin'," both released on the RPM label (a Chess Records subsidiary) and featuring his signature eccentric vocals and piano work, often backed by musicians like Ike Turner on guitar.[3][2] Additional 1950s successes included "The Chicken," the latter sparking a short-lived dance craze, while his 1960 Vee-Jay release "Just a Little Bit" became a blues standard covered by over 50 artists and reportedly sold more than four million copies in various versions. Despite persistent contract disputes with labels like Chess, Modern, and Duke—leading to legal battles over royalties—Gordon's Caribbean tours in the 1950s and early 1960s exported his rhythm to Jamaica, where it inspired sound system DJs and artists like Theophilus Beckford, laying groundwork for ska's "afterbeat" emphasis as noted by Island Records founder Chris Blackwell.
In the early 1960s, Gordon retired from full-time music to raise their three sons and operate a laundry business in Queens, New York, though he occasionally performed and launched his own Bab-Roc label in 1969 for sporadic releases. A late-career resurgence began in 1981 with renewed touring, culminating in the 2000 album Memphis, Tennessee on the Stony Plain label, which earned him a nomination for a W.C. Handy Award for his contributions to blues heritage; he appeared in the 2002 PBS documentary The Road to Memphis before succumbing to a heart attack on July 11, 2002, at age 74.

Michael King has been a staple in the Dallas/Fort Worth music scene for more than 20 years as a drummer, but in recent years he’s stepped forward as a guitarist, singer, and bandleader. Inspired by the legendary Albert Collins, Michael formed The Icebreakers a year and a half ago to honor Collins’ legacy while building his own sound. With influences ranging from Stevie Ray Vaughan and Buddy Guy to B.B. King and Gary Moore, Michael blends intensity, soul, and authenticity in every note. He writes music rooted in real life experiences—moments of joy, challenge, and everything in between—and his playing carries the kind of phrasing that speaks even when the singing stops.
The Icebreakers deliver both original music and powerful renditions of Collins’ catalog, with Michael working to capture the Iceman’s unmistakable tone. He’s managed to re-create it without alternate tunings or capos, staying true while still carving out his own identity as a player. Michael recently released his first EP, Come With Me, and is already preparing to head back into the studio to record his first full-length album for broader release. Whether you’re a longtime blues fan or new to the genre, Michael King & The Icebreakers promise a performance that keeps the spirit of the blues alive while pushing it forward.
