So many kinds. Whisky, or whiskey? Bourbon? Single malt? Highland single malt? Blended? Charred barrel or not? Oh the varieties. And so it is with the Ben Rice Band’s Pour Me Some Whiskey.
This CD is like going into a bar and discovering that the shelves are all top notch whisk(e)ys. In this case, you have ample styles of blues to choose from, and what the hell, just say, “Barkeep, pour me some whisky. Surprise me….” And he does.
The first thing you’ll notice about this young man is that he plays slide guitar incredibly well. He teaches slide guitar, in fact. Ben has great energy, writes great songs, and plays really well, whether slide or not. With lyrics like “My father was a preacher, my mother a prostitute,” you just know it’s going to be good. Joining him are Ryan Rustrum on drums, and Tom Rice on bass. Three guys? Yea, for the most part. You know it’s gonna be good, or go home.
Oh, a little Makers Mark? How about the Memphis soul sound of “I know You Love Me”, with what sounds like a pedal steel — a Hawaiian swing!? On to the swing band “Chop You Up”, and the added funk in “Cheaper By the Dozen”, all songs with the added horns. Man, that was smooth, and that fire inside is starting to build.
A little Green Spot? Oh, stepping up now. “Give Me a Call,” with its shuffle swing groove let’s you know these guys can kick it up a notch. Opening with flames on the drums, “Country Boy,” drops into a rocking Mississippi hills guitar riff and filtered mic. The title cut, “Pour Me Some Whiskey”, is a straight up quarter note back beat groove. Can you feel it!? Velvet fire gonna get those feet a movin!
Here, try this. It’s The Maccallan. At a certain point, you put the boogie out on the floor fun aside. It is time for some serious 30 year old drink. Sit back and marvel at what emerges. “Wreck On You” has a Steve Earle/John Hiatt wild boy angst all fueled with a four on the floor straight up rock beat augmented with wind in your hair slide work. This is the sippin stuff! Focus on it, hear that taste! The lap steel of “Wants Me Back Again” brings to mind that wonderful deep sound of Chris Whitley, layered with a beautiful bass line backdrop. “Bad Bad Boy” closes out the album with a slide tour de force, and this is one CD that gets you applauding from your chair! The finish lingers on the palette after the final notes have stopped….
You’ll be surprised by that bar keep all right. All the different kinds of blues they know and the other styles that have influenced these young players means you’re going to leave that ear bar a happy camper, and you will be back.
Whether his previous two CDs or this one, go ahead and ask Ben Rice Band to Pour Me Some Whiskey, and slake your blues thirst!

Produced by Grammy Nominated Linda Tillery, this self- released debut is a meticulously crafted blend of contemporary blues, light jazz, and pop. Gwen Avery has a sensual voice, sultry and expressive. Like the great blues singers, Avery has a voice that slips seamlessly from sassy to seductive and right on to spiritual. The opening track,"Sugar Mama 2k showcases Avery's style. The song opens with slow jazz, then jumps into an appealing pop-standard style song with lively sax and piano. Her rendition of "The Thrill is Gone" masterfully evokes the woundedness and bitter determination that suffused B.B.Kings hit 1970 version. "Marianne" with its steel drums and inviting Caribbean flavor, moves the dancer with an irresistable beat, and Cry No More moves that listener to the deepest essence of anguish and joy.Her gospel tinged "I'm On My Way" rocks out with full on 50's style sax. Her disarming interpretation of the folk classic"Suzanne" by Leonard Cohen takes the song! to another place. She gives Precious Lord a gospel favorite, a new immediacy and freshness.

Issaquena Getaway is the new full-length album from harmonica virtuoso Charlie Barath – a blues & roots recording with a joyful Delta spirit, and world-class musicianship. Recorded at Clarksdale Soundstage in Clarksdale, Mississippi and co-produced by Gary Vincent and Charlie Barath, the album draws its character from the quiet spaces of the Delta, where subtlety and groove matter more than volume or excess. Comprised of twelve original compositions and two covers, Issaquena Getaway reflects Barath’s long-standing commitment to blues tradition while allowing room for personality and warmth. His harmonica playing moves fluidly between gritty, hard-edged blues and soulful, single-note lines rooted in classic styles, while his vocals serve the songs with an unforced, conversational ease. Throughout the record, storytelling remains central, with melodies and arrangements designed to support the narrative rather than distract from it. Despite its deep roots in traditional blues forms, Issaquena Getaway is notably upbeat in spirit. With the exception of the sharp-edged “Brass Monkey,” the album leans toward feelgood material – blues meant to lift the room and keep listeners engaged from start to finish. Subtle surprises, including the Cuban-flavored instrumental “Cuban Getaway,” a departure from standard blues that adds color and motion while remaining firmly grounded in the album’s roots-based foundation. Barath is backed by a powerhouse blues band and joined by special guest Johnny Burgin on guitar, reinforcing that Issaquena Getaway is a complete band record and not a vanity project, with strong ensemble playing and rich, analog-friendly production.

Garret T. Willie - Bill’s Cafe

Bitrate:320K/s
Year:2026
Time:34:30

Label:Gulf Coast Records
Styles:Blues/Blues Rock

Tracks Listing:
 1. Hypnotist - 6:06
 2. Devil Doll - 2:53
 3. Going To Toronto - 3:28
 4. It Won’t Get Done - 3:29
 5. Small Town People - 4:00
 6. High Beam Blues - 3:53
 7. Young Country Boy - 3:40
 8. Golden Highway - 3:51
 9. I’m Late - 3:07

Garret T. Willie’s ‘Bill’s Café’ is a powerful statement of intent.
Were it not for the fact that he hails from a little rural town called Alert Bay, off the northern tip of Vancouver Island in West Canada, you would be tempted to call this album a coruscating blue-collar rock and blues album. As it is, it’s an album buoyed by Willie’s rough hewn, riff driven style and is shot through with a relentless roadhouse boogie undertow. It rocks hard, while his songs occasionally looking beyond the well trodden boogie path. It’s an impressive work in progress from a vocalist whose world-weary phrasing belies the fact that he’s only in his mid-twenties. He generates his cornerstone bluster with a rip-roaring guitar style and a voice that could shatter glasses at 3 paces, leaving award winning producer Tom Hambridge to funnel the unremitting energy into 9 songs which showcase Willie’s strengths. We are levered into a double helping of rock-a-boogie before Willie broadens his palate to explore some light and shade in a feisty blues-rock style that serves his song narratives well. The album title ‘Bill’s Café’ references his grandfather’s pool hall café in Alert Bay, British Columbia, while the mix of his own musical explorations and reflective narratives mirror his own journey so far from B.C. to Nashville. So while there’s the big sounding ‘Small Town People’ – on which a Jon Harvey (Monster Truck) style vocal attack and big guitar avalanche is in sharp contrast to the ‘Small Town’ he sings about – it is soon counterweighted by the Nashville tinged ‘Golden Highway’.
The latter is an acoustic-into-electric Hammond embedded arrangement which gives the clearest indication of where producer Hambridge sees the future for his young charge.
In his bluesier moments, Willie’s vocal phrasing recalls Howlin’ Wolf and Captain Beefheart, as on the opening barn-burner ‘Hypnotic’. It’s a confident opener with a mid-number, sledgehammer blues tempo change, before reverting to a roadhouse rocking style. The following ‘Devil Doll’ is more concise and employs a booming vocal with some shrill slide playing on an intense wall of sound.
Better still, is the powerful boogie ‘Going To Toronto’, which to these ears should have been the lead single from the album. It’s the kind of song which suggests a mix of the autobiographical with the imagined, though Willie apparently lives by the motto, “if you haven’t lived it, don’t sing it.”
He cleverly records the song with two different vocal lines, before settling on a satisfying double tracked end-result, (not too dissimilar in its raw power to Clutch’s Neil Farron).
The exuberant accompanying piano and his blistering guitar solo give the track real heft.
He finds a new equilibrium on the pulsating groove and catchy hook of ‘Get It Done’, while the afore mentioned ‘Small Town People’ adds lyrical irony: “She likes small town rhythm way more than she loves me.” At the three quarter point of the album, he slips into two blues related tracks, on which ‘High Beam Blues’ surprisingly eschews an expected guitar solo, while on the stripped down autobiographical ‘Young Country Blues’, he pushes his vocal into Omar Dykes (from Omar & The Howlers) territory, suggesting he’s totally at ease with his own material. ‘Bill’s Café’ is a brave stab at re-contextualising the familiar rock-a-boogie genre. It is to be hoped that the closing exclamatory ’I’m late’ isn’t a presciently titled, as it’s the kind of visceral enduring rocker that reminds us of John Fogerty.
In sum, Garret T. Willie does enough to suggest he has the energy, musical chops and writers vision to channel his life experiences into songs which will define his own style in the not too distant future.

Altered Five Blues Band - Hammer & Chisel

Bitrate:320K/s
Year:2026
Time:44:46
Size:103,4 MB
Label:Blind Pig Records
Styles:Contemporary Blues

Tracks Listing:
 1. I Got It Good - 4:17
 2. Dare Me To Do It - 5:21

 4. Lotta Love Left In Me - 3:43

 8. Hell Or High Water - 4:30
 9. My Love Ain't A Lie - 4:10
10. Crazy One - 2:51
11. The Will Of Man - 4:11

Originally known as The Altered Five, These guys from Milwaukee have given us their umadulterated rocking blues for 23 years now, Singer Jeff Taylor is huge and black and his powerful vocals are surely in line with that; he’s as impressive a frontman as they come. Guitar player Jeff Schroedl equals that power and energy. He alternates a catchy, chugging rhythm guitar with searing solos. Mark Solveson on bass and Alan Arber on drums constitute a rock solid rhythm section. Steve Huebler is a driving force on the keyboards. The album was again produced by Tom Hambridge and features the impressive Jason Ricci on harmonica in three songs.
After releasing a covers album in 2008 the quintet started writing their own songs and teamed up with producer Tom Hambridge; this resulted in a continuous flow of excellent albums and EPs, many of which garnered them awards and prizes. There was for example the award-winning song Great Minds Drink Alike. This one exemplifies the sense of humour that most tracks are imbued with.
This truly impressive album shows the listener right from the start what it’s all about; opening track I Got It Good is a powerfully rocking blues with a thumping bass and driving drums; energetic horns add a touch of merriment, and so does the fiery guitar solo. Dare Me To Do It is a convincing slow blues with a rollicking piano. Jason Ricci performs magic on the harmonica.
On the hard-driving Who Can You Trust Jeff Taylor’s vocal abilities take the track to great heights, helped out by Huebler’s propulsive organ. Here they prove it’s hard to find a tighter contemporary blues unit. They take their foot off the accelerator for another compelling slow blues Lotta Love Left In Me; Taylor’s emotional vocals get wonderful support from some dazzling piano. From then on they focus a bit more on their soul side with a pleasant pause with the solemn Hell or High Water The piano-driven The Crazy One leads up to the gentle, gospel-like closing track The Will Of Man, which again showcases some great vocals. Both jeff Schroedl and Steve Hoebler perform wonders on electric guitar and organ respectively. What a fitting finish to this great album.
The astonishing quality of this versatile album should not come as a surprise given the track record of these five guys.

Blues Hall Of Famers Lil’ Ed & The Blues Imperials — led by Chicago slide guitar icon Lil’ Ed Williams — will release ‘Slideways’, their 10th Alligator Records release, and perhaps the crowning achievement of their entire career. For nearly 40 years together, Lil’ Ed Williams and The Blues Imperials—bassist (and Ed’s half brother) James “Pookie” Young, guitarist Mike Garrett and drummer Kelly Littleton—have been delivering gloriously riotous, intensely emotional, wickedly playful Chicago blues to audiences around the world. Lil’ Ed—like his musical forebearers, slide guitar masters J.B. Hutto (Ed’s uncle), Elmore James and Hound Dog Taylor—is a giant of the genre. Produced by Williams and Alligator Records founder and president Bruce Iglauer, ‘Slideways’ is a dynamic, high-energy collection of 13 songs, including 12 written or co-written by Williams. With the band at the absolute height of their powers, Williams’ singing and playing is thrilling and at times hair-raising. The songs—eight featuring the deep blues keyboard playing of Ben Levin (“He’s got that old-time style,” says Williams)—are filled with simple, relatable truths. They feature colorful characters in humorous to harrowing situations, some sinning while grinning, others smiling while crying. From the high-octane opener Bad All By Myself to the feral 13th Street And Trouble to the home wrecking Flirt In The Car Wash Skirt to Lil’ Ed’s heartbreaking and soul-shattering reinvention of Homeless Blues, Slideways is a tour-de-force of old school Chicago blues performed with up-to-the-minute urgency. Williams says the new album captures the band in all its glory, and Iglauer brought out the best in each member. “Bruce challenged us. He pulled things out of me I didn’t expect, and I’m glad he did. Pookie worked his butt off and played great. Mike always plays something cool. He lays the flavor down the way I like it. And Kelly, he’s a wildman. He makes me stomp my foot even harder than normal.” Mixing smoking slide guitar boogies and raw-boned shuffles with the deepest soul-burners and heart-wrenching slow blues, Lil’ Ed & The Blues Imperials perform each track with an impassioned sense of wild abandon. Lil’ Ed’s celebratory slide work, deep blues string bending, fervent vocals and riveting original songs, all powered by The Blues Imperials’ rock-solid, road-tested, telepathic musicianship, are as real and hard-hitting as Chicago blues gets. According to Guitar World, “The band is a snarling boogie-blues machine.” The Boston Globe says Lil’ Ed plays “positively scorching guitar,” and the band delivers “a classic Chicago vibe with an energy that’s timeless.” With Slideways’ endlessly enjoyable music, Lil’ Ed & The Blues Imperials provide an entry point for new listeners as much as a “welcome home” to long time “Ed Heads” all over the world. After almost four decades together, the band’s authentic, unvarnished blues and their infectious energy, joyful showmanship and masterful performances have been honed to a razor’s edge. Even so, they continue to push each other to greater musical heights. “I love my guys to the point of no return,” adds Lil’ Ed. “They always surprise me.” As for the band’s durability, he says, “What I love is that we’re a family, and families stay together.”

"The Girl with the Golden Voice". Bev Conklin writes and performs the Blues from her own life's lessons. She has collaborated with Wayne Smith (former keyboardist for Jay & The Techniques), her band director, for most of her more than 30-years performing career.
Bev lived abroad and across the U.S. during her father's service in the Army.  Her grandfathers, Dr. Joseph A. Hardin and Dr. Beverly V. (BV) Baranco, from New Orleans and Baton Rouge, respectively, were noteworthy leaders politically and socially during the early to mid-20th century. She comes from a legacy of family musicians to include Leontyne Price, Lil (Hardin) Armstrong and Wilbert Baranco. She learned during her Grandfather BV's funeral that he went to school with and was a long-time friend of Kenny Neal's father, Rapheal. During that time, Kenny was dating her Aunt's best friend Pat until she passed from a return of breast cancer. Bev met Kenny and Pat through Kevin McCann (Little Red Rooster) at a Blues concert he put together in Doylestown PA when BC & The Blues Crew started performing beyond the Lehigh Valley. So, while she was unaware of her family ties to Opera, Jazz and Blues, Bev has found her niche in music through circumstance and extraordinary connections to the Blues.
Her role was to be a highly educated, contributing member of society.  She received her degrees from Penn State, including her masters in Public Administration before considering law school.  Beyond that, she had no idea what she wanted to be. Through life and perseverance to achieve at something, she found the Blues (... or did the Blues find her). She began a 30-year corporate career the same time she began her journey with the Blues.
She has received Lehigh Valley Music Awards year over year for Female Vocalist, Blues Vocalist, All-around Performer, Director's Award, Community Award and more. The Blues Guild of the Lehigh Valley presented Bev with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2020.
She performed with Lonnie Brooks at Mayfair (who’s bass player Biscuit dubbed her "the girl with the golden voice"), Ray Charles at Franklin & Marshall's alumni concert, billed with Koko Taylor and Tonya Brown (Queen Bee and The Blue Hornet Band) at Mayfair's Union Terrace Stage, Ronnie Earl at the PA Blues Festival, Carl Weathersby at Kingston Mines, Shemekia Copeland at Sellersville, Sista Monica in Doylestown, Saffire at Godfrey Daniels and more. In 1997, BC & The Blues Crew won the local International Blues Competition (IBC) for the Billtown Blues Association in Williamsport PA. The band then went to Memphis TN during the Blues Foundation's IBC and became one of the seven Finalist from their repertoire off their award-winning UNFINISHED BUSINESS CD. Bev volunteered and traveled across county and state lines to learn about the Blues at festivals and events. She worked on the boards of numerous organizations in the Lehigh Valley and held most all the positions, including as President of the Lehigh Valley Blues Network.  She eventually began writing for several Blues publications.  Eventually she found her passion in supporting women in the Blues. Buddy Fox (Manny's Carwash) and Darryl Bridges (Terra Blues) was about to manage the group when Bev was hit in a head-on car accident that brought the band's momentum to a sudden halt. Bev was the highest award-winning, Female-led Blues band in the Lehigh Valley with BC & The Blues Crew up until the car accident that eventually led to a hiatus from their touring days. Bev Conklin remains one of the top performing, female-led Blues bands in the region as well as being an advocate and ambassador for the Blues. Her main desire is to perform abroad and to a broader exposure beyond the Lehigh Valley. Bev is focusing on re-instating the Lehigh River Blues Jam, establishing a home base with a new listening room called Roots Music Concerts and continuing her songwriting and working with The BC Combo and BC Blue. With the news of MoMojo Records signing Bev Conklin, the re-distribution of previous recordings are under way. Three new recording projects are also in progress.

Born in Chicago, keyboard player and singer Sam Joyner is a true entertainer with a remarkable sense of humor, together with an impressive stage presence and interesting lyrics, that make him an outstanding storyteller. He was son of Reverend Joyner, a preacher from a local church in Tunica in the heart of Mississippi, who later moved to Chicago. Reverend Joyner wanted his son knew the life conditions of black people in the south and, every summer, he took him to a farm, to have a first-hand experience of his relatives lives who were still living in Tunica and Turkey Scratch. For a city boy, those experiences deeply marked his life and his music.Sam Joyner is currently fully immersed in developing his career and he is managing to get a place in the competitive black music market. Sam has an impressive voice and a style framed in Chicago blues, but also in the rhythms of New Orleans, Mississippi rural blues and even in jazz, rhythm & blues and reggae. This recording gathers twelve songs where you will discover his versatility, thanks to a varied repertoire, which makes it to be easily appreciated by a wide range of black music lovers, who will also smile with the lyrics of each of his songs that are devoted to topics like drug abuse, one-side relationships, Saturday night parties at juke joints, compatible relationships or even present a tribute to Robert Cray and a version of “Hoochie Coochie Man” where Sam experiments with piano and electric drums.A group of excellent and professional musicians contribute to give a good dose of quality to the recording.

Born and raised in North Carolina, Andy Coats has been involved in music since his early teens, when he sang and played in a hard rock band and later a progressive rock band. From there he worked his way back to the genres in which so much rock is rooted: the blues and other roots based music. "My passion for this sort of music really came to a head when I was about 25 years of age. I was living in Southern California, struggling through graduate school, and it was then that the magic of the blues masters fully hit me. I dove head first into Robert Johnson's material, listening to it daily. There was also this great weekend radio show, "Nothin' But the Blues", hosted by Gary "The Wagman" Wagner, coming out of Cal State Long Beach. I have fond memories of listening all day, picking up my guitar, and jamming along. This helped me get through some tough years ... . As a student I made almost no money, and I felt my career prospects were pretty bleak--there were very few teaching jobs available, and a Ph.D. in Philosophy is not exactly the most marketable degree ... . This is how I came to identify with the blues, although I will be the first to admit that the kind of problems I had were nowhere near as immediate and urgent as those of the classic blues singers." After completing his degree in 1999, Andy was able to focus all of his attention on his music. He has released three independent CDs and appeared on "The United State of Americana", a 2004 compilation put out by Shut Eye Records. He has performed live on NPR radio stations in the Midwest and in the South, and has played at a wide variety of events, including the 2006 Arkansas Blues and Heritage Festival (formerly King Biscuit), the Iowa State Fair, the Court Ave. Blues Fest (Des Moines, IA), A Ride Across America (Santa Monica, CA), and the Tsunami Blues Benefit (Long Beach, CA). Andy has also played at venues across the country, including the premier blues clubs in the Los Angeles area: B.B. Kings, the Blue Cafe, and Martini Blues; and has enjoyed the honor of opening for national-level acts such as Eric Sardinas, and W.C. Handy Award winners Rod Piazza and the Mighty Flyers. In 2003 and 2004, Andy was named one of the top blues acts in Southern California by the Southern California Blues Society, when he was selected to compete in the regional phase of the International Blues Challenge.

The B. Christopher Band - 106 Miles To Chicago

 5. She Caught The Katy - 4:07
 6. Gimmie Some Lovin - 2:59
 7. I Can't Turn You Loose - 2:12

After capturing my full attention almost four years ago with his album Snapshots From the Second Floor, B. Christopher has returned to win me over again with his latest album 106 Miles to Chicago. Jake and Elwood aficionados should get the reference immediately, as this is a tribute album to one of my all-time favorite tribute bands The Blues Brothers. With every listen to this album, I can feel the joy pulsating through the music of these seven outstanding tracks. B. Christopher’s guitar mastery is joined by Eddie Testa on lead vocals, Anton Fig on drums, Nick Douglas on bass and backing vocals, Bruce Katz on keys Andy Snizter on tenor and baritone sax, Ryan Keberle on trombone, Tony Kadleck on trumpet, original Blues Brothers member Tom “Bones” Malone on baritone sax on ‘Gimme Some Lovin’”, Sharlotte Gibson on backing vocals, and Studebaker John on harmonica.Floyd Dixon’s “Hey Bartender” makes a fantastic introduction to the album. Testa’s vocals are perfectly fitted and B. Christopher’s guitar solo absolutely cooks. Electricity and excitement fill the air when the band breaks out “Everybody Needs Somebody to Love”. With the great Bruce Katz on keys, and guest appearance by Bones Malone, this is an absolute favorite. Hearing the horns kick in with that oh-so-familiar bassline on “Peter Gunn” puts a giant smile on my face. I dig the interesting licks B. Christopher lays down on this.  The band knocks that Spencer Davis Group 1966 hit “Gimme Some Lovin’” out of the park as well.
B. Christopher Band’s 106 Miles to Chicago pays an honorable tribute to the world-renowned blues duo The Blues Brothers. It’s definitely a record I’d recommend. It’s a fun listen.

Markey Blue Ric Latina Project - Blue Eyed Soul

 9. Me Missing You - 4:15
10. Come On - 3:21
11. With You - 3:59
12. What Am I Gonna Do - 3:59

"...As the note on the one sheet claims, "This album is a gathering of most of the Markey Blue Ric Latina family", and as Markey further points out, "We wanted to bring everyone together for this collection of some of the most beautiful music we've ever made". With that said, the talented group of musicians assembled for Blue Eyed Soul is indeed plentiful. So plentiful in fact, that they are too numerous to mention. However, I will tell you that Markey Blue - on all vocals, and Ric Latina - on all guitars, are joined by about half a dozen each of different bassists; different drummers; different keyboardists (of which one is Markey); different horn players; and different background vocalists (of which one is Markey). The disc's twelve tracks are all Markey (Jeanette Markey) and Ric (Eric B Latina) originals.
Simply because the opening track - "Crazy Without You", is amazingly beautiful in every way, it immediately validates Markey's "Some of the most beautiful music we've made" comment. Her lead and backing vocals - along with those of Vickie Carisco and Lauren Anderson - are celestial; Ric's guitar leads are both scintillating and silkily subtle; the laid-back rhythm of Randy Coleman on bass, David Northrop on drums, and Markey on organ is immaculate; and the sound of Shannon Wickline's synthesized strings is purely paradisaical. Beautiful indeed!
Although some of the players have changed, a track titled "So Much" is similarly beautiful. The way in which Ric replaces runs and decibels with simple and crisp notes on his guitar is totally masterful; the rhythm - this time with Randy (Bass) being joined by Dino Clay on drums, with Mark T. Jordan and James Sonnetag on keys - is precision perfect; and the catchy sing-a-long chorus line of "do, do, do...dododo...do, do do...dododo...do, do............." with Markey doing the lead and Shaun Murphy doing the harmony back-ups is pure magic. This is put a smile on your face music at its best.
"Baby I'm Crying" is one of the more slightly aggressive tracks. It's an up-tempo ballad that features Markey - with harmony backing from Anna Marie and Tracey Palfalvi - showcasing her fabulous vocal range while soulfully and emotionally belting out the melancholic lyrics associated with a breakup. The track also features some of Ric's more prominent lead guitar licks mixed in with some funky rhythm runs. Speaking of funky, on their only appearance, Sean O'Brien Smith on the bass and David "Smitty" Smith on the drums are being just that.
Another slightly funky track is one called "Set My Heart Free". With yet another different mix of players: Truman Virder on bass; Dion Clay on drums; and Chris Tuttle on organ, continue to lay down what has quickly become the disc's common denominator - excellent rhythm. Again, speaking of rhythm, adding Dana Robbins on sax and Jim Williamson on trumpet and flugelhorn kicks that up a notch.
Although the lyrics of Markey's fabulously flawless vocals on this track have no relation whatsoever to these, "When I Close My Eyes" and listen to Ric's stunning guitar work on this track, I trip out. This is Ric Latina at his very best. Replays of this one will be many.
So here I am telling you about the sixth of my favorite tracks, and I find myself about to tell you about the sixth rhythm configuration as well. This one is titled "Can't Let You Go" and it features Anthony Joiner (bass) and Tim Smith (drums) continuing to lay down rhythm as fabulous as the maestros before them. Also helping out in that department are Shannon - once again shining on organ; and Miqui Gutierrez, on the sax, now joining Jim and lighting it up on the horns. Then there are the Mr. and the Mrs. doing their usual thing - belting out fabulous guitar and vocal leads.
Over the many years I've known Markey Blue; the many times I've see her - then later on, her and Ric perform; the many of her - then later on, her and Ric's music I've reviewed; and the many styles of songs I've heard her sing; What she did here on Blue Eyed Soul was indeed some of best and most beautiful work ever.
Other tracks on this wonderful release include: "Raining Down On Me"; "Yes, I Do"; "Me Missing You"; "Come On"; "With You"; and "What Am I Gonna Do".
Another interesting note on the one sheet mentioned that "Six of the twelve songs on this album have already been picked up for television placement", and to that I'd like to add that with all of them being the perfect length, I can honestly see all twelve being picked up for airplay..."

 7. Thunder - 3:30
 8. This Ain't No Fun - 4:41
 9. Truth Is the Question - 3:41
10. Keep on Driving - 3:30

Next in Line, the third album from Tyler Morris continues to break new ground for the nineteen year old guitar prodigy.  Chock-full of blues-soaked rocking originals, this record, produced by Grammy Award winner Paul Nelson (Johnny Winter), stands tall.  While Morris holds the fort down on guitar, the rest of the band is comprised of vocalist Morten Fredheim, bassist Scott Spray, drummer Tyger MacNeal and keyboardist Mike Dimeo. Morris lays down the blues in a tantalizing jam with the fabulous Uptown Horns in the instrumental “Choppin’”.   His performance in “Thunder” rides the rails of a funky dirty groove and is downright amazing.  The great Joe Louis Walker teams up with the band to belt out the classic SRV barnburner “Willie the Wimp”.  The swirling sounds of Dimeo on organ coupled with MacNeal’s tremendous beats and Spray’s standout bassline set a perfect stage for Morris’s searing licks. “Down On My Luck” is unbelievably good.  Morris fills this stunning song to the brim with an intoxicating blues riff which keeps the energy flowing while Fredheim’s powerful vocals evoke a spectacular fierceness. If this is any indication of what’s in store from the band in the future, I can’t wait to hear their next album already.

Quickly emerging young Texas musician Mathias Lattin won 1st place at the 2023 International Blues Challenge in the band category and the Best Guitarist Award at 20 years old. The excitement is spreading rapidly. A graduate of the acclaimed Kinder High School for Performing and Visual Arts magnet program, Mathias was offered a scholarship at Boston’s Berklee College of Music – but the pandemic quickly scrapped those plans. Mathias came up quickly in the Houston scene, playing Jonn Del Toro Richardson’s blues jams when he was 13, and later joining Keeshea Pratt’s band. Houstonians like Annika Chambers and Shawn Allen served as mentors and inspiration. His training as a jazz guitarist is reflected in his soulful blues, jazz-inflected chords, and funky bass lines. Mathias wrote and produced all the songs on ‘UP NEXT’.  In a recent Living Blues article, Lattin expresses his feeling for the awesome power of music: “Music has literally been able to save people’s lives. The stories that it can tell, the emotions that it can communicate, it’s a powerful thing. It makes us move, It makes us feel. It makes us—for lack of a better term—human. And without that, this world would be a whole different place, a different experience. Without that, it would all be less human, more mechanical.”Personnel: Mathias Lattin: Guitar, Vocals, Bass (tracks 1, 3, 4); Nick Andres: Drums (tracks 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10); Chris Whitiker: Drums (track 4); Mark Simmons: Drums (track 1); Ross Fields: Rhythm Guitar; Jesse Gomez: Bass (tracks 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10); Shawn Allen: Organ (track 1), Keyboard (track 1), Andrew Douglas: Organ (tracks 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10); Darrell Lavigne: Piano (track 1); James Murphey: Tenor Saxophone (track 3); Kyle Turner: Tenor Saxophone (track 5); Stuart Adams: Trumpet (track 3)/

Seattle-based Joel Astley is an 18-time Washington Blues Society Best of the Blues honoree thanks to his work in several ensembles in the Pacific Northwest, but the harp player makes a dazzling debut as a headliner with this disc, which – like the title infers – was produced by Kid Andersen at Greaseland. A mix of jump, swing and more, Astley shines on the reeds with backing from Johnny Burgin and Andersen on guitars and keys, June Core on drums and Randy Bermudes on bass. Astley’s lilting voice is a perfect match for the contemporary original themes that populate the set.

The world needs more vocalists like silky-throated tenor Marcel Smith. He simply dazzles from the opening notes of this CD, which delivers old-school, blues-drenched soul in a manner that would have made him a superstar in the ‘60s or ‘70s. A seductive and alluring mix that includes gospel, too, it’s a winner on all counts. Produced, mixed and mastered by Kid Andersen at Greaseland Studio in California, this star-laden effort includes contributions from Jim Pugh (organ), Rick Estrin (harp), a full horn section and appearances on rhythm from Dereck “D-Mar” Martin (drums) and Jerry Jemmott (bass) along with a host of others. Mike Bourne is a fairly experienced blues guitarist, who in the past played with Otis Rush, Sam Lay and Barrelhouse Chuck. Together with his Mike Bourne Band (Sam Trenier (tenor saxophone), Bryan Herman (drums), Cardy Quintero (bass), and Jim Beisman (keyboards)), he clearly showcases his experience and versatility on his album. He has been influenced by artists like Louis Jordan, Louis Prima, T-Bone Walker, and B.B. King. Blues with a generous dose of jum blues!
This can be heard, for example, in the swinging "Lose Your Rings, Keep Your Fingers" (great song title, by the way!). An angular, hopping number with biting guitar work from both Mike Bourne and guest guitarist Johnny Burgin. "Missouri Boy" is a steaming, raw rocker that bops along powerfully and features fiery guitar work. "Cruisin' Kansas City" is a loosely swinging instrumental shuffle with a nice, soulful, pumping organ from Jim Beisman and razor-sharp guitar playing. "Humpty Dumpty" is a funky blues in the best Albert King/Albert Collins tradition. "Help Somebody" is also funky, but in a different way. A languid G. Love-esque sound mixed with gospel influences. "The One" is a deeply intimate soul ballad thanks in part to Sam Trenier's intimate saxophone and Mike Bourne's soulful vocals. "Dangerous Game" pumps sultrily in a Creedence Clearwater Revival/Omar & the Howlers vein. "Kansas City Grease" is the deeply moving instrumental closer of this album. A wonderfully varied album from a top blues band!

When you are an apprentice to blues legends such as Louisiana Red and Eddie Kirkland you must be a very special person with an enormous amount of potential. Niko Riippa is one such individual. Well folks, the man would live up to those high expectations and more. After more than 2000 gigs in 13 countries and 5 albums with The Wentus Blues Band, Riippa has cut loose with a solo album titled Bohemian Breakfast that is bound to impress the most particular blues-rock enthusiast. Antti Sioberg's vocals give away their origin at times but he does a great job and I really enjoyed how he handled each song. Oh yes, they are from Finland. Riippa is the consummate six-string maestro, making his way through nine tracks of diverse blues-rock that are progressive in terms of traditional blues playing, he is a very advanced. The tracks that highlighted my listening experience are definitely three, five, and seven. "On My Way," which features some smoldering riffs and "Meat Milk and Honey" is a funky blues-rock run that gets your head going like a bobble doll. The instrumental "Sleepwalking" (very similar to often covered "Sleep Walk") is a real keeper, it has a nice blues surfy sound to it, like riding that endless wave in your minds eyes, on your way to the barbeque on the warm sandy beach. The entire album was most enjoyable. The blues is a worldwide community and listening to an artist that is so far removed from places like the Mississippi Delta and Chicago proves how powerful this music is. There are no boundaries to its reach. If a band of men can gather in Finland and make blues-rock music this good, then there is your proof how universal da blues is.

Every now and then you get to hear, or more accurately, you get to feel the blues through an artist. On his release, Blues Kitchen, Scott Taylor not only shares the feeling, but serves it up like a steaming bowl of blues stew. Tasty as hell. Scott Taylor is based out of DC, but the blues he pours out has its roots in traditional deep southern melancholy. Blues Kitchen is his first release through Fetal Records, and its first single, “Tennessee” drips of loneliness and need. Crying guitar work over a sparse arrangement leaves plenty of room for Taylor’s song of aching desire. “Going back to Tennessee, got a woman waiting on me, and I just can’t do her wrong.” Yeah, the road can be a long and empty place for a man missing his woman, and through the guitar and vocal, Taylor’s anguish is convincing.

One of the top trios in Nashville with five previous CDs to their credit, The Coal Men haven’t released a full-length album in eight years, but they return in style with his this stunning and satisfying mix of blues and roots – a spirited combination that will have you yearning for more. Led by guitarist/vocalist Dave Coleman and featuring Dave Ray and Paul Slivka on drums and bass, they’re joined by Jan Gunderman (Sheryl Crow), pianist who tickles the keys on a 1950s Everett upright piano that formerly resided in Nashville’s Downtown Presbyterian Church.Produced by The Coal Men’s founding guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Dave Coleman at his Howard’s Apartment Studio in Inglewood, TN, Everett is The Coal Men’s first full-length release in nearly eight years.  The album sees the long-running trio – comprising Coleman, co-founding drummer/backing vocalist Dave Ray, and bass guitarist Paul Slivka (Tommy Conwell and the Young Rumblers) – fully embracing their streamlined electric guitar-bass-and-drums approach adding only accent melodies and sustain textures from a 1950s Everett upright piano Coleman purchased from Nashville’s Downtown Presbyterian Church. As played by Jen Gunderman (Sheryl Crow, The Jayhawks), Lane Kiefling (solo artist, and piano tuner of the Everett), and Coleman, the addition of the upright epitomizes the inventive production style Coleman has developed at his popular Howard’s Apartment Studio while also bringing a distinctive emotional color to his ever-expressive songcraft.“‘Black Cat’ is a commentary of a dangerous but magnetic attraction,” says Coleman. “Written with Taylor Bates, this song is The Coal Men’s attempt to blend the music of Tony Joe White and Marc Bolan of T-Rex. Howard’s Apartment Studio features at least five felines, so their swagger is an influence.” From there, the bittersweet “Rather Be Right” and the anthemic “cry of appreciation” to Joe Strummer, “Come Back Joe,” Coleman draws simple, straightforward character studies exploring the unique relationships between people and the places they inhabit, some deeply personal, others more hyperbolic, but all richly constructed and resonant with the veteran musician/songwriter’s two-decades-plus adventures in Nashville and beyond.“We’ve kept our course in these nearly 25 years as a band and I hope some folks find this record relevant and inspiring in the time it’s released,” says Coleman. “The voices, songs, playing, and recordings are curated by experience and genuinely our own. I hope they resonate with listeners who find it refreshing.” Hailed by Todd Snider as “one of Americana music’s great songwriters,” Dave Coleman grew up near the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area in rural East Tennessee, where he thought he’d join his mother as a park ranger, but once he hit the stage in a local band, music took over. Coleman headed to Nashville where he graduated from Belmont University while writing and gigging with legendary guitarist Duane Jarvis (Lucinda Williams, John Prine, Dwight Yoakum). By 20, he had already begun making his name around Music City, hired to write songs for famed publisher Acuff-Rose Music while building up work as a guitarist alongside Matthew Ryan, Stephen Simmons, Jessi Alexander, and a young Taylor Swift. In 1999, Coleman and Dave Ray founded The Coal Men and quickly staked a claim among Nashville’s finest outfits, earning critical applause and the support of such like-minded artists and musical heroes as Snider, The Delevantes’ Bob Delevante, Buddy Miller, and the late, great John Prine for their amplified brand of evocative Americana. Since then, the band – joined in 2012 by bass guitarist Paul Slivka – have steadily unleashed a series of critically acclaimed albums, including 2013’s Escalator and 2016’s Pushed To The Side, while also sharing stages with such like-minded acts as Snider, Avett Brothers, Darrell Scott, and Chris Knight, among others. Now, with the long-awaited Everett, The Coal Men are poised to climb even higher, fully manifesting the rich craft and triumphant energy that has defined the band since its very start.
