Mike Bourne is a fairly experienced blues guitarist, who in the past played with Otis Rush, Sam Lay and Barrelhouse Chuck. Together with his Mike Bourne Band (Sam Trenier (tenor saxophone), Bryan Herman (drums), Cardy Quintero (bass), and Jim Beisman (keyboards)), he clearly showcases his experience and versatility on his album. He has been influenced by artists like Louis Jordan, Louis Prima, T-Bone Walker, and B.B. King. Blues with a generous dose of jum blues!
This can be heard, for example, in the swinging "Lose Your Rings, Keep Your Fingers" (great song title, by the way!). An angular, hopping number with biting guitar work from both Mike Bourne and guest guitarist Johnny Burgin. "Missouri Boy" is a steaming, raw rocker that bops along powerfully and features fiery guitar work. "Cruisin' Kansas City" is a loosely swinging instrumental shuffle with a nice, soulful, pumping organ from Jim Beisman and razor-sharp guitar playing. "Humpty Dumpty" is a funky blues in the best Albert King/Albert Collins tradition. "Help Somebody" is also funky, but in a different way. A languid G. Love-esque sound mixed with gospel influences. "The One" is a deeply intimate soul ballad thanks in part to Sam Trenier's intimate saxophone and Mike Bourne's soulful vocals. "Dangerous Game" pumps sultrily in a Creedence Clearwater Revival/Omar & the Howlers vein. "Kansas City Grease" is the deeply moving instrumental closer of this album. A wonderfully varied album from a top blues band!
