This CD is a rarity -- good songwriting (all originals), good musicianship, and intelligent, sometimes socially conscious lyrics that get far away from the conventional "I love you, you left me, I can't stand it, I'm gonna die" blues rut. Several of the songs on this CD are real gems, particularly "Got to Read Between the Lines" and "Dollar In," which contrary to the other review is not a "gambler's jam." On the musical side, the players are all better than good, and the blues on this CD are very much R&B informed, with an appropriately full horn section. The only minor quibbles are that the recording quality is mediocre and that this CD is relatively short -- only about 45 minutes. But given the good musicianship, the good songwriting and great lyrics, and that all of these songs are originals, these really are only minor quibbles.
If you like R&B-oriented blues (e.g., Doug Sahm's "The Last Real Texas Blues Band"), you'll enjoy this CD.
