Rune Nordvik, who emerged from his mother's clutches back in 1962, has a wealth of musical experience audible in every note of "What Are We Livin' For...?" – but the Norwegian's first projects were a long time coming, only taking shape in the late nineties. Fast forward to 2011. Nordvik now presents his second PAPASLIDE album, and despite its clear American musical roots, a distinctly Nordic coolness still shines through in the groovy, pentatonic-scaled concoction – as does his deep love for his most important personal blues musician, Johnny Dawson Winter III. Just listen to the programmatically titled track "Guitar Mentor," and all questions will be answered. At times, the trio around Rune seems a bit overambitious, so the laid-back feel occasionally suffers, and you also have to get used to the protagonist's voice, which is almost too tame, too clean, even somehow too sober and untainted.
CONCLUSION: "What Are We Livin' For...?" is certainly solid and technically perfect, but many songs lack that spark that inspires more than just foot-tapping. ~ Chris Popp (Info)/
