In 2008, Stage-addicted, a live album by the 32/20 Blues Band from Rhineland-Palatinate, was released. The successor is called “Crossbrain”. The quartet around guitarist and singer Thomas Neukirch relies entirely on their own compositions in the ten songs. With the exception of the final song "Moonshine", which was written as a collective by the band, all other tracks were written by Heiko Wilhelmus. The numbers on this record were recorded with the feeling necessary for the blues. The disc has a fine sound and the participation of guests Thomas Bracht (Hammond/Fender Rhodes) and saxophonist Thomas Desch are a real enrichment of various songs. The album's two bookends "Ignored" and "Moonshine" illustrate the diversity of the 32/20 Blues Band 12 bar. The opener, which is also the longest piece on the record, is the finest blues with banjo and damn good keyboard interludes. This finest rocker is psychedelic to a certain extent and, alongside a clear-sounding guitar, Thomas Neukirch's gripping voice also adds to the positive impressions. With a tricky rhythm, the first piece is already worth listening to and the lead guitar really works hard in the solo. So you have to keep the listener glued to the record. We are eagerly awaiting the next songs. “Moonshine” stirs up dust in a different way. In the stomping Chicago shuffle you once again take the path of blues rock and can create great riffs over the course of the playing time. The six-string sounds wonderfully distorted and somehow like a bottleneck. Class! Ah, the back team also has the groove. In "Call You Trouble" the foot rocker gets additional impulses and you can think a little of Stevie Ray Vaughan. Definitely not a bad address for four minutes.
With a sharp guitar tone and uptempo, "Forget About You" skilfully moves in the fast lane of the blues highway. The piece has a very special funk... 32/20 Blues Band. In one way or another, each track has its own special characteristics that demonstrate fine songwriting and good arrangement. Here the two electric guitars play in unison for a long stretch with different tonal colors. Great piece!
Yeah, the metal tube roars and we end up with "Get Over Here". You're happy to accept the ultimate-sounding invitation. Thomas Neukirch can sing really rough and the bottleneck practically sparkles throughout the entire track. Hammer!
“Real” is the ballad of the disc. When the mood is reserved, even the singer becomes gentle, but also expresses a lot of emotions. The keyboard accompaniment by Thomas Bracht is fine here. This song is a slow blues that you can't easily ignore and that you'll want to listen to again and again. A wonderful place to relax.
With “Join The Band” you have another furious package of rock in your luggage. There's no hiding the fact that Rory Gallagher is one of the combo's favorites. The relaxed, calm part is beautiful and is greatly enhanced with an energetic electric guitar solo.
Oh man, “Stay” is a surprise in terms of the variety of styles. The blues and beat music meet at a The Ventures event and put a brisk pace on the dance floor. The street may be completely different, but Irish blood clearly runs through the veins of “Wall Street”. With a change of rhythm and another twinky sound you really step on the gas and then find your way back to the song's theme. Great! "Without You" is just relaxed but great cinema.
The 32/20 Blues Band has released a great album with “Crossbrain” and will definitely have to readjust the radius of their fan base.
