Matthew Robinson was first introduced to roots music as a young man at St. John College Heights. At the same time, he started singing in the St. James Baptist Church Choir in East Austin. He learned to play the blues from W.C. Clark, James Polk, Martin Banks and Clarence Pierce and was influenced by the recordings of Howlin' Wolf, Magic Sam and Otis Rush. In 1964, he started his first band, The Mustangs, with some of his high school friends and neighbors - Charles Shaw, Charles Martin, Oswell Mercer, Malone Allen, Larry Townsend, Sam Persley, Sara Scott and Aaron Cash. The band was very popular in Austin. The band played the campus circuit, much like Cookie & the Cupcakes and Archie Bell. After winning the battle of the bands in Austin, beating out Baby Cakes with Don Lupo, they recorded a 45 on a record label based in Dallas called Stangs records, "How Do You Quit" and "Tender Loving Care." Sara wrote the words and Matt came up with the arrangements for the recording. With this 45, the Mustangs were able to tour the United States. The Mustangs opened up shows for James Brown, Jimmy Reed, Big Mama Thornton, Johnny Winter and Herman's Hermits. They played Austin clique clubs like the Jade Room, New Orleans Club, Armadillo World Headquarters, Swingers a GoGo, Vulcan Gas Company and Club Sorenson. In 1971, he went back to Austin to focus on playing guitar. One of his biggest influences was Storm, a band that Jimmie Vaughan was playing with in Austin. In 1976, Matthew joined James Polk and the Brothers. Other players in the band were John Reed, Angela Strehli, Martin Banks and Gerald Blocker. In 1996, Matthew formed his own band, Matthew Robinson and the Texas Blues Band. Matthew has worked in Europe with WIllie Foster, Blues Boy Hubbard, Phillip Walker and his own band. He has also worked in Brazil several times with his friend Nuno Mindelis.
