The album *Lightin' Up* by Daddy MT & The Matches features 12 tracks of top-notch, "juicy," and driving blues—complete with genuine guitar solos in the spirit of the great masters! Daddy MT & The Matches play Chicago blues with heart and soul, and it shows in every note. Their original compositions deserve special attention; they capture the spirit of Chicago blues—the foundation of their sound—far better than hackneyed cover versions. Nicolas Ammollo (drums), Olivier Lombardi (bass), and Christophe Oliveres (guitar) form a powerful, tight, and effective ensemble (reminiscent of The Teardrops), providing solid backing for bandleader Mathieu Tessier. His guitar work—expressive yet free of unnecessary clutter—evokes the styles of Lurrie Bell and Magic Slim. Like them, he plays naturally, employing confident fingerpicking and eschewing effects pedals, all while creating music rich in dynamic shifts between tension and release. And while the vocals may occasionally lack nuance, it is impossible to resist the charm of this Chicago blues, rarely performed with such sincerity and talent!
