Bud dropped out of college during his senior year to join a touring band. They never made it big but he's been making it small ever since.

He's toured from the Great Lakes to New Orleans and all points in between.
His live shows can be all original music from his seven independently released albums or cover tunes- a wide mix of 60's through 2000's pop, blues, classic rock and easy listening styles on a playlist that features songs from Sinatra to 3 Doors Down.
Raised in a musical family- his dad was a jazz bassist and his mom a public school music teacher. Bud tried violin and piano early on but found his true instrument with a second hand guitar. Exposed to jazz, classical, opera and show tunes, he favored blues and rock. He eventually returned to school and earned a B.A. in Music Performance from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville focusing on classical guitar and playing in the college jazz band.
Bud has been a member of the music faculty at Lewis & Clark College, Principia College, and Greenville College and he’s been a guest instrumentalist on over a dozen albums for fellow artists.

Music is about chasing a feeling- happiness, excitement, anger, sadness. Blues is the most intense combination of music and feeling. The power and emotion of the music transcends time and can be felt by people of all ages and ethnicities- the sole reason why the blues will survive
and thrive for generations to come.
The blues, like all elements of life, is meant to grow, change and progress while retaining its essence. Kenny “Beedy Eyes” Smith and the House Bumpers accomplish just this with their latest album, “Drop the Hammer.”
Kenny honored the blues legends he admired by laying down a few traditional tracks. Much of his playing was molded by the teaching of his late father, Willie “Big Eyes” Smith, who was the drummer for Muddy Waters for over 18 years, and it was important to give this nod of respect.
To know who you are and where you are going, one must always honor and acknowledge from
where you came.
This album focuses on contemporary subject matter while using modern and innovative sounds. As much as Kenny loves and respects traditional blues, he was compelled to take his blues to a new realm and dimension. Kenny didn’t live and experience picking cotton in the fields. He is a native Chicagoan and inspiration for this album was drawn from the rhythm of footsteps on jagged pavement, the soulful, shadowy noise of the city at night and the soundtrack from the eras in which he grew up to be the man and musician he is today. This music is transgenerational. It is raw. It will grab you by your core and will feel familiar yet foreign at the same time.

Mascot Label Group and Gary Hoey have announced a March 15 global release date for "Neon Highway Blues" via Provogue Records. The album's eleven tracks display Hoey's confidence and assuredness alongside the freshness of someone who's still in the process of discovery and refinement. Hoey produced the album himself at his New Hampshire-based home studio, while also enlisting friends Eric Gales, Lance Lopez, Josh Smith and his 17-year-old son Ian for guest appearances. He shares: "I really wanted to make sure this album had a lot of blues on it. I kept sticking to the blues and listening to the classic players, all the Kings — Albert King, Freddie King, B.B. King — and finish with some Burger King… [Laughs] …I tried to get that to be a focus of this record — and still put some songs for that my long-time, die-hard fans expect; instrumentals and some rockin' [LED] ZEPPELIN-type stuff. There's definitely a variety here."
Hoey's 21st album, "Neon Highway Blues" kicks off with "Under The Rug", a funky, Jeff Beck-style workout with Eric Gales. Up next is the dynamic 6:29 slow blues "Mercy Of Love", featuring Josh Smith, with biting guitar solos. Hoey gets his Texas swing on for "Still Believe In Love" and settles into some roadhouse shuffles on "Your Kind Of Love". "Damned If I Do" is a big, stomping blues rocker with Lance Lopez trading licks. And those majestic instrumentals he mentioned? Check out "Almost Heaven", "Waiting On The Sun" and the cinematic title track, all showcases of virtuosity that complement the grittier fare around them.
A very personal highlight for Hoey is "Don't Come Crying", an aching blues track that features his son Ian Hoey, then only 16, planting his flag in the family business. "I'm so blown away my son is actually on the record," Hoey says. "He loves the blues. I said, 'If it turns out good enough, I'll have you on the record, and he did a great job. After it was mixed and I listened to it, I totally forgot where he was playing and where I was playing. It brought tears to my eyes." "Neon Highway Blues" "wasn't a quick record to make," nor was it easy, according to Hoey, and displays the care that came with the time spent on it. "I always say that's why they call it the blues, because it ain't easy," he notes. The album took about a year and a half, he estimates, much of it done during gaps in his heavy touring schedule. "I just kept going in and trying to come up with the right licks or the right lyrics, and some days it just wouldn't come," Hoey recalls. "It was really about staying in there and trying things, abandoning some ideas, going on to new ideas. There was a lot of that on this record. I'm kind of a stickler for making sure I'm happy with it — even though I had people breathing down my neck to get it done." "Neon Highway Blues" will, of course, take Hoey back on the highways and byways for plenty of touring and playing, well, the blues — and more. He can't yet predict where the next road will take him, but Hoey is confident it will be an adventure. "My son and I were talking about new music, some new technique I just found on guitar, and he said dad, 'You've been playing 44 years and still get excited,'" he says. "I was, like, 'Yeah, man, that's the amazing thing about music — you never really get there. If you think you're there, that's when you're in trouble because it's all about the journey."
Hoey will appear on both the Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise (February 3-10) and the Rock Legends Cruise VII (February 14-18), after which he'll visit Nashville to participate in Rock 'N' Roll Fantasy Camp (February 28 - March 3). Additional confirmed appearances include Bull Run in Shirley, Massachusetts (March 8), Mauch Chunk Opera House in Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania (March 29), Tupelo Music Hall in Derry, New Hampshire (May 3) and the Sellersville Theater in Sellersville, Pennsylvania (May 24). Jonah Tolchin may hail from New Jersey but he has acquired a Southern soul. Breaking out as a young folk/blues acolyte on his 2012 self-released album, Tolchin drifted more to the singer/songwriter side of the road on 2014’s Marvin Etzioni (Lone Justice) produced sophomore disc, Clover Lane, released on Yep Roc. That garnered substantial critical respect and found him gaining a commercial foothold through airplay and perhaps more so by touring the country opening for like-minded artists such as Dave Alvin, Chuck Prophet and Tony Joe White. He follows with the similarly styled Thousand Mile Night, also produced by Etzioni at Memphis’ legendary FAME studio.
Etzioni smartly realizes that less is more with Tolchin. Instead of adding subtle strings and Steve Berlin’s sax as on the previous disc, he strips down the approach to a tight, taut three piece backing unit. One listen to the swampy chugging title track with its swirling, ominous slide guitar and oblique concepts (“radio plays but nobody listens”) shows he made the right decision. Tolchin’s comforting, dusky voice and somewhat mystical lyrical slant (his web site lists various recommended spiritual books and authors) combines with low key, generally acoustic based fare like the lovely, lilting, tender opening “Beauty in the Ugliest of Days” and “Song About Home,” the latter shuffles along on bubbling percussion, the singer’s comfortable, natural voice and his sure sense of melody.
There’s an understated Guy Clark feel to the laconic country-tinged “Paint My Love” but Tolchin is more convincing in the tougher, bluesier fare of “Where the Hell are All of My Friends.” That song snakes its way through its changes with a low key yet forceful and intoxicating mood drawing in the listener to its darker landscape. The  one-two closing punch of the driving “Working Man Blues #22” and a haunting solo, acoustic cover of Skip James’  “Hard Time Killing Floor Blues” brings Tolchin back to his beginnings. Yet it’s the organ led, gospel based “Unless You Got Faith” shifting from a sweet, loping vibe to a closing rave-up that jumps out with an immediately accessible melody you’ll return to as soon as it’s over.
The mix of upbeat folk-rockers with moodier fare makes this such an impressive and convincing album.  It’s a logical step forward for Tolchin whose performance feels grounded and lived in and reflects a talent who has absorbed rustic, humid, red clay sounds, employing that groove for his own often hypnotizing originals.

I’ve always loved Shawn James’ take on blue-eyed soul, his emotive vocals verging on gospel in their conviction. Yet, with each latest release, I started feeling like there wasn’t much new happening.
On this album, he is reaching forward, and backward at the same time. Forward in that he has brought on a violinist who perfectly completes the music, and backward in that he sounds like he has found renewed inspiration for his old songs, pouring out his heart through his vocals. He sounds better than ever here.This is one of those rare live recordings where something special was captured. The recording and mixing are flawless. I also want to say the violinist has an amazing tone and style.

I had been aware of Bobby Rush for a number of years. He was always out there. I would occasionally hear a cut or two and always liked what I heard, but it didn't hit close enough to my main musical loves to make me a real "fan." So, when I had the opportunity to review his recent release, Raw; an effort billed as something more in the acoustic roots vein, I decided to give it a listen. I popped the CD in the drive and up comes Boney Maroney. Not what I was expecting. And not hitting the spot for me either. Hmmmmm……(more on this one later.) Then we get Good Morning Little School Girl. Better. Not Bad. Hey, this isn't bad at all. I think I'll sit down and really listen to this now. It is a fairly sparse arrangement. The kind of sparse that comes when an artist wisely never uses four notes when one will do to convey the feeling. And after all, blues is about feeling first. The third track, Rush's Glad To Get You Back, starts raising the energy a bit. Shawn Kellerman has joined in on some tasty slide. Bobby Rush steps out on harp and we have definitely found the groove. My wife has come into the room for a better listen. The energy in the room keeps building as the CD moves through its tracks. A build up here; a little mellow reprise there. The wife sits down and I notice her foot tapping. Another track or two and my teenage daughter is laying across the ottoman listening intently to 9 Below Zero. I'm not sure when I grabbed my own guitar to play along but I realized I had during track eleven, How Long. Fortunately, the supper was just starting to burn as the CD finished so we didn't ruin our entire meal! No one got up until the album had played all the way through and I had started it a second time, then a third, then a fourth. I heard someone describe Robby Rush's performance as being heavy on the sexual energy. I'll have to see for myself now that I've heard Raw. The decision to use Boney Maroney as the opening track was perfect and after listening to the entire work again I understand the context. The whole package works to build just the right energy and just the right mood. With Raw, Bobby Rush is delivering a spectacular contemporary translation of the traditional blues idea!

For his fourth solo album, youngest Neville Brother Cyril has taken a break from his group Tribe 13 and made a successful return to the blues. But this is no ordinary blues. It's a gumbo cookin', alligator whuppin' serving of blues – Louisiana style. Using a crew of decorated musicians including guitarist Tab Benoit and Neville family members Ian, Ivan and Art, Brand New Blues seasons the medium's conventional structures with just the right amount of New Orleans funk to avoid over-powering the mix.A cover of Jimmy Reed's I Found Joy is a 12 bar organ shuffle that turns the notion of the blues as inherently sad music on its head; the title song pairs an old school drum machine with a twin guitar attack; whereas Shake Your Gumbo is a Funkadelic type heavy blues wig out in swing time. Neville has a longstanding interest in the business side of being a musician (he founded New Orleans Musicians Organised to prevent local players from getting ripped off). This savvy informs Mean Boss Blues, a searing lament on the state of the US economy. And his well documented love of reggae and outspoken views on the Hurricane Katrina disaster collide for an anguished, eight-minute version of The Wailers' Slave Driver – with an extra verse written in – the album's piece de resistance and final track. Cyril found fame as the percussionist with older brother Art in the funk group the Meters before joining The Neville Brothers (who continue to play together til this day). Few musicians have embodied the spirit of New Orleans music as long a Cyril Neville. While brother Art redefined funk with the Meters, Aaron captured our hearts with his soaring voice and Charles kept us from forgetting the city’s jazz heritage, Cyril laid down percussive rhythms on several classic Meter recordings before branching off with his own group, Soul Machine.
When the Meters disbanded, the four brothers coalesced into the Neville Brothers Band, gaining international fame for music that mixed all of their individual strengths into one potent package.
Hurricane Katrina scattered the brothers across the country. Cyril found a like-minded spirit in Tab Benoit and joined the Voices of the Wetlands band, where his commitment to social activism fit right in. Next, he formed the blues/rock super group, Royal Southern Brotherhood, with guitarists Devon Allman and Mike Zito. No matter what project he is involved in, Neville’s contributions always come wrapped up in the fiery intensity of a man who wants to right the wrongs of the world.
You can hear that intensity on tracks like “Still Going Down Today”, which tackles the issue of equality, and “Money and Oil”, a guitar-driven rant about big business with Mike Zito sitting in on guitar and Norman Caesar on keyboards. The funky backbeat created by “Mean Willie Green on drums and Carl Dufrene on bass serve as a counterpoint to Neville’s indictment about the plight of the common man on “Invisible”. As he does throughout the disc, guitarist Cranston Clements fires off blistering guitar runs that help drive the point home. Zito is back for a rousing cover of the Rush classic, “Working Man” as Neville reaffirms his concern for those still struggling to get by.
Walter Trout makes an appearance on “Running Water”, a sturdy rocker he co-wrote with Neville. “Swamp Funk” is a rollicking tribute to the music from Louisiana, where the sounds of the swamp mixed with the intricate melodies of the big city. Neville gets the help from the reigning kings of the New Orleans keyboard style – Allen Toussaint on piano and Dr. John on organ. “Something’s Got a Hold on Me” does a slow burn until Cranston unleashes several gut-busting solos that send the track into Led Zeppelin territory.
“Magic Honey” is a swirling musical gumbo seasoned with a strong dose of New Orleans funk as Neville brags about the special love he gets from his “queen bee”. He transforms the lighter, Caribbean-style rhythm on “Another Man” into a brooding admonishment of a cheating woman. Neville drives the message home with gusto on “Blues is the Truth”, then closes the disc with an elastic reggae rhythm on “Slow Motion”, celebrating love, sun and water.
Cyril Neville is at the top of his game throughout this recording. He is in command through all of the shifting musical styles and line-up of special guests. Whether he is raising his voice against injustice or simply relating the facts of life, Neville makes you listen – and care. It’s not all blues but it certainly is damn fine music that comes highly recommended!

This is, at its core, Blues. Specifically, Blues & Deep Roots. Taking cues from West Side Chicago Blues masters with a heaping dose of New Orleans and Memphis R&B, each band member contributes to writing all the songs on this album.
This is the second album by Good Rocking Sam. The first album, Try To Hold On (released under the name The Ravens) is no longer in print. The songs on this collection follow the themes we've been working on since 2002: love, food, cars, cheating men, bad women, boasts, apologies.
Drawing inspiration from West Side Chicago Blues masters and New Orleans & Memphis R&B, the members of Good Rocking Sam all contribute to the songwriting process. Each member brings a unique perspective to the process by virtue of being from all different parts of the country and bringing those life experiences and musical styles to table.

This Is our third album in a series of explorations of American Blues & Soul music. Largely driven by our experiences leading up to, and following our visit to Memphis and the International Blues Challenge in 2017, these are our take on Modern Blues.
Bllu Dur'm is Good Rocking Sam's third album of songs celebrating our love of American Blues, R&B, and Soul music. As always, all the songs are original. Some of the songs, like No More Water (a Marley-esque corn-field holler and ode to the struggles of farm life), have been in the live repertoire for years, while others were written in the last few years. Memphis, for example, was inspired by our visit to Memphis, Tennessee for the 2017 International Blues Challenge. Soul Crusher, wonderfully sung by Chuck Taylor, is another Memphis inspired tune -- perhaps something one might hear from Stax Records.
The bluesy Cheated You Fair and Square is another GRS song that has been kicked around for a while but has never sounded as good as it does now. Like many of our songs, Love Crime is a collaborative effort: Mike Conway had a basic idea for the music, Dave Sword picked up his golden book of unused lyrics, and the song fell into place. Hey Hey Yeah is a playful romp with references to Willie Dixon’s Wang Dang Doodle and other good times had in the piney woods.
Several songs are very personal: “Going to hell just a Poppin' and Crackin'” is a phrase Dave Sword's great-uncle would say, and -- despite the rockabilly fun -- his was not a happy ending. Engine 9, an American train song of sorts, is one of two songs written while David Mozier was being treated for cancer. The other, Only Man, is a love song written to his wife, with a nod to Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions. The album’s closer, Red Line, is a revived highway classic that marries Mitch Ryder and Otis Redding. One can almost hear Mike Conway singing along as he travels from Detroit down south.
The title Bllu Dur'm is a play on the legendary name “Bull” Durham and refers to the city that we call home. "Dur'm" is how locals refer to Durham, North Carolina. A resurgent and dynamic city, Durham has become an epicenter of North Carolina Blues music, with an explosion of nightclubs and restaurants that feature live Blues and Soul music. Where Y’at chronicles a drunken pub crawl of our fair city, including such familiar landmarks as the old Durham Bulls’ ballpark and the Blue Note Grill -- the hub of the Triangle Blues universe.
