Rockin’ Jake has been hailed by many as one of the premier harmonica players in the country. His original sound is a hybrid of second line, swamp funk, blues and zydeco with influences from Paul Butterfield, Big Walter Horton, James Cotton, The Meters,WAR, J. Geils Band, Clifton Chenier, and the Fabulous Thunderbirds. Jake has conjured up this formula that is blowing crowds away from coast to coast. Widely known as a touring juggernaut among his peers, his schedule of over 200 performances per year include clubs, concert venues, and festivals.Based out of New Orleans since 1990, Rockin’ Jake relocated since being flooded out by Hurricane Katrina, then settled in St. Louis and now lives in Southern Florida.Originally from the East Coast, the “blues bug” bit at an early age for Jake. He immersed himself in the thriving regional blues scene, which boasted such talents as Roomful of Blues, Ronnie Earl, Duke Robillard and Sugar Ray. Primarily self-taught, Jake briefly studied with Jerry Portnoy, harmonica player for Muddy Waters.In 1990, when Jake moved to New Orleans where he began to work with such notable New Orleans mainstays as: blues diva Marva Wright, Mem Shannon, Coco Robicheaux, Little Freddie King, Tommy Ridgley, Eddie Bo and other local legends. During this time Jake also toured nationally with G. Love & Special Sauce, blues and pop legend Maria Muldaur as well as logging international miles with bluesman T.J, Wheeler. He was selected to perform in an all-star band featuring blues legends Pinetop Perkins and Hubert Sumlin at the Howlin’ Wolf.In 1995 he formed the Rockin’ Jake Band as an outlet for his original music and his unique swampy sounds. One year later Jake recorded his debut CD, “Let’s Go Get ‘Em” (on Rabadash Records) which earned him national recognition. In 1999 Jake produced “Badmouth”, on Zuluzu records followed by “Full-Time Work” in 2002 on the same label. It included an all-star cast of musicians such as John Gros (Papa Grows Funk), Ron Johnson (Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe), Bryan Stoltz (the funky Meters), Ben Ellman and Theryl “Houseman” de Clouet (Galactic). In the spring of 2004 he recorded his band’s first live cd. Over four days in Key West, Florida at the Green Parrot, he and his band recorded 5 p.m. Breakfast on Zuluzu records. Jake’s work has also been heard on the soundtrack of “The Big Easy” television series, the theme for the “Mike Ditka Show, ” and a Miller Beer commercial. In 2010, Rockin’ Jake became an official BBQ judge for the Kansas City Barbque Society!He is a five-time winner of Off Beat Magazine’s coveted Best of the Beat award for best harmonica player. Jake is truly a hard working musician with extraordinary talent. He and his band pour out their souls in every performance with high energy and electricity which consistently brings the audience to their feet. In his spare time Jake managed to snare some culinary kudos in New Orleans, taking the trophy for “Best Barbequed Brisket” at the 1999 New Orleans Musicians Barbeque Competition, and launching his own line of signature hot sauce: “Badmouth” (the edible version)…”man it’s hot!”…just like the band! Jake also takes time to give back to his New Orleans community with Project Prodigy Music Camp for children as well as the Blues in the Schools programs in New Orleans and other cities in the US.

Like father, like son? Not always as A.J. Croce, son of Jim, has proven since he started his solo career 20 years ago. Not only does A.J. sound little to nothing vocally like his famous dad, his music is far more eclectic, specifically jazz influenced, than his father’s earthier, traditional singer/songwriter work. A.J.’s eighth album (for his seventh label) finds him recording 6 singles, A and B sides, with a half dozen different producers in as many cities. The names include everyone from the legendary likes of Allen Toussaint and “Cowboy” Jack Clement to Kevin Killen and Mitchell Froom. All songs were released, one each month, in 2013, but anyone who might have missed them can catch up with this handy 41 minute compilation. As you might expect, the approach is diverse with the younger Croce shifting from the gutsy jazz/blues of “The Time is Up” to the Latin tinged, Joe Jackson styled gospel/pop “The Call of Love” to the more rollicking boogie-woogie soul of “Rollin’ On,” a track co-written with Leon Russell, and sounds it. He shifts into the light country pop of the Nick Lowe variety in “What is Love” and floats like Paul Simon on “Venus & Adonis.” New Orleans gets a tasty spin on “Easy Money” and the twang C&W on “Momentary Lapse of Judgment” shows Croce’s comfort with Nashville music.
Regardless of the genre, Croce slides into these songs with an easy charm. His comfy, grainy voice ties the tracks together and the live in the studio performances keep the tunes buoyant. With a classy, sophisticated touch that gives the project a sweet, slightly rootsy feel, the album flows remarkably well, especially considering its Frankenstein-like construction. While nothing jumps out as a striking performance, this is a pleasant and enjoyable collection by a talented songwriter not content to be hastily or conveniently labeled as someone cashing in on a famous last name.

Hank Mowery raced onto the local and regional blues scene in the Mid 90's his band The Hawktones. As General Manager of The Rhythm Kitchen Cafe, Mowery honed his skills jamming nightly with the local and national blues acts that happened through The Kitchen. During this time Mowery had the opportunity to share the stage with true legends of the blues such as Pinetop Perkins, Gary Primich, William Clarke, Little Charlie & The Nightcats, Anson Funderburg, Mark Hummel, Rusty Zinn & many more.In 1996 & 1998 Mowery had the opportunity to tour briefly with Blacktop recording artist Mike Morgan & The Crawl filling in for their ailing front man. Independent After several years of spreading their jam around the city of New Orleans, Mo' Jelly Band has released its fi rst album to a number of eagerly waiting fans. The fun-loving band of local Gentilly and French Quarter natives released Homemade Jam in 2013, contributing their homegrown funk'd-out style to the musically famous city. Their musical admiration of New Orleans greats such as Professor Longhair, Allen Toussaint, Ernie K-Doe, the Meters, the Radiators, and James Rivers seems to have heavily infl uenced the album's tone. Their way of pulling together a number of sounds and rhythms in an improv-like action affi rms the band members’ individual stints and talented musical skills in the industry over the years. Many have played alongside other great musical acts at historic local and regional venues, including playing the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, and touring with Cajun bands across Europe. Homemade Jelly is a twisted trifecta of bluesy soul funk, with sprinkles of Southern-styled rhythm and blues that only a native could understand. The album was recorded with all six band members: Johnny Price (guitar/vocals), Bobby Perkins (guitar/vocals), Mike Sipos (drums), Doug Ridley (keyboards/vocals), Mike Delacerda (bass), and Buddy Francioni (vocals), with a few great featured musician, including former Radiators percussionist Glenn “Kul” Sears. Not to be confused with the Australian, Brisbane based band, "Small Mercies". This album is from the Vancouver based soul blues outfit, Small Mercies, led by James Grant. James Grant is an accomplished and skilfull guitarist who will impress you with his evocative soulful guitar playing. This album is very much soul blues based in the style of Robert Cray, but also has good jazz, blues and prog. rock touches with Gary Moore and Joe Satriani influences. "Jade", and "So Many Nights" are just two of the nine solid tracks on the album. A very good, but short album from a talented band who have received various accolades in Vancouver, B.C. James, himself, has won many awards for composing, live performances and recording. He has a self produced album, "Mythology", available, consisting of original instrumental compositions, which may be worth hearing.James was originally born in Montreal where his father James Mcpherson was the first violinist for the Montreal symphony. The family decided to move to Vancouver, and so James’ high school years were spent on the west coast. At five years of age he exhibited signs of interest in playing the guitar, taking his fathers’ violin, he flipped it and holding and plucking it like a six-string. By the time James reached seventeen, he was playing the A circuit in Vancouver accompanying well known musicians like Warren Cann of Ultravox , and Ra McGuire (Trooper’s vocalist.) . Then came Crosstown Bus, a highly successful and well-known Vancouver band that played mostly southern blues-rock, like ZZ top. After Crosstown Bus came a band called Jet... a five piece that included Jim Vallance ( Brian Adam's co-writer) on drums and John Hall (of Prism) as well as renowned Vancouver vocalist Kenny McColl. By this time James was established as one of Vancouver’s premiere guitar players. James worked for Bruce Allen and Sam Feldman's booking agency for many years with all A circuit Bands. Another Unit of notoriety was called Foxfire, which made an enormous impact on the Vancouver music scene featuring well known vocalist, Joanie Bye, Dave Taylor (Bryan Adam's Bass Player.)This outfit had a hit single called Hollywood, which received ample airplay. By this time James put his own recording Studio together and recorded his album. 'Armed with an Attitude' on which he played all instruments and wrote all the music and lyrics. He then put an original band together with artists like Lee Olifant (who won a CARAS award for best Bass. Next came the album James Grant and “Small Mercies” written by James. This group took Vancouver by storm as they swept the major categories in the annual “Demo Listen derby”. In addition to walking away with first- place Honors for best Vancouver band, John Howard won best bass player, Frank Dato took best drummer honors and James won best guitarist. His Music was then placed on the well-known seeds compilation album, which honors the winners of the Annual C FOX Best band of the year event. They were invited to play at the Famous Sumac Mountain annual event along with some of the top bands on the west coast. James had a special invitation to play at Lou Gosset Jr’s wrap party in Vancouver for the movie “Inspector”. Lou Gosset Jr chose Small Mercies because ‘he loved their material’. The Opening for their CD party at the Roxy was a Fantastic success. Nobody ever said that playing the blues was easy.
However, it’s the goal of blues musicians to make it appear that way, hiding countless hours of hard work behind seemingly-effortless performances. Not everyone can pull it off and be well-known in “Showbiz,” although they certainly try their hardest.
This year, Minnesota’s “Little Bobby” Houle (last name rhyming with ‘pool’) has put forth his latest CD in an ambitious spirit. He also performed at the Mississippi Valley Blues Festival in Davenport, IA this July. Photos of him from that event can be seen in the August 7, 2014 issue of BluesBlast. He may have sung some songs from “Showbiz” there.
Out of eight total tracks, the only cover is “I’d Rather Go Blind” by Etta James. The others are a mixture of blues, rock and soul. Sometimes the instrumentation doesn’t quite mesh, and Little Bobby’s vocals are rather raw and often buried in the mix.  What makes him and his band tick? They give their all, musically and lyrically, but their unfocused style could benefit from fine-tuning.
2005 was his debut CD, Before the Storm, followed by 2007’s Down, Dirty and Mean, 2008’s I’ve Got a Woman, and a live DVD in 2009 called A Night at the Empire. He’s performed at concerts throughout the U.S. and Europe, including the RAWA Blues Festival in Katiwice, Poland and the Chicago Blues Festival. The Chicago Sun-Times rated Little Bobby and Nora Jean Bruso the number-one band to see. The site reads: “In 2011 the two put together the CD ‘Good Blues’, [which] Little Bobby not only played on but wrote and produced. The album not only appeared on the blues charts but helped push Nora Jean to her 7th BMA nomination for ‘Best Traditional Female Blues Performer.”
Little Bobby’s first instrument was the drums. He got his first set from his aunt and uncle. His passion soon changed and he was turned on by the sound of the guitar. His first influences were the blues style of Jimmy Page and [Jimi] Hendrix. He met another Indian brother, who one day told Bobby, “You have a blues voice.”  Already being self-taught, the improvising style of the blues seemed like a natural fit. After getting a cheap recorder he laid down his first blues cut “Hey There Storm” and got his first radio spin on “The Riverside Blues Show.” From there Little Bobby was hooked on the blues.
In the liner notes to the album, Little Bobby says, “…I hope there will be a song on this CD that will help you through tough times or inspires you in your life.” Bobby, who played most of the instruments himself, also thanks saxophonist Maury Finney, drummer Michael “Taco” Valasquez, and second sax player Jimmy Wallace.
In “Showbiz,” at least as it relates to the blues, many are called but few are chosen. Houle has what it takes to make it big! Let’s hope he keeps on truckin’.

The seed of the album "A Little Taste" began in New Orleans pre Katrina. It is a 13 song disc which travels the dusty roads of the Delta to New Orleans. It winds through Kansas, Memphis and Chicago and delivers some Texas back road juke joints. Several eras of blues influence this body of songs. Strains of Robert Johnson, BB King, Louis Armstrong, and Charlie Christian dot the landscape of this aural canvas. V & the Wholly Cats are named in homage of the brilliant contributions Charlie Christian left as inspiration for all future generations to enjoy. While in New Orleans, songwriting partners Holly Goulard & Vernon Wills immersed themselves in a study of the blues. The body of songs that emerged filled 4 demo CD's and then some. It was Holly's intuitive insight that was the spark to get Vernon into the studio and record the songs for prosperity. Vernon contacted his drum teacher Mike Michalkow who offered his expertise as a drummer and percussionist. Soon after Shael Wrinch @ Beatty Lane Studios (Vancouver) was onboard as engineer for the session. Bassist, Dave Graber was recruited from Hawaii for the recording date. Amber Goulard offered her services as a vocalist and took some brilliant photographs of the band as well. Keyboardist, Tom Carter simply showed up one morning and asked through the console mic if he could sit in with us, within moments he was one of the Cats completely. The album was recorded 'live off the floor', guitars and vocals were handled by Vernon. This older style method of recording is not commonly employed but was utilized to keep it real. Over the first three days the 13 tracks were laid down and took shape. Some additional editing, percussion and backgrounds were added on the fourth day. Chris Bellman @ Bernie Grundman's mastered the CD, our own Tom Carter provided the art (his art!!) for the liner and Groove House manufactured the CD. Not necessarily the process for an impatient person but we are so proud of the end result. We had a lot of fun and were blessed with magic too! The Wholly Cats came together quite effortlessly, after years of individual endeavor, effort and love for the blues. BB King and Dr. John have been a lifelong inspiration and thrust of influence.
