The posthumous album from beloved Western Pennsylvania musician Kip London emerges from a series of recording sessions with Norman Nardini at his East Side Sound Studio just prior to London's untimely passing in 2022. Masterfully produced by three-time GRAMMY winner Kirk Yano at his studio in Brooklyn, NY, Yano assembled a distinctive group of musicians to skillfully complete the project. 
Never straying from the original energy of London's vocal and guitar tracks, producer Kirk Yano assembled a distinctive group of musicians to provide a rhythmic foundation and solos to skillfully finalize 'The Last Dance' after London's passing. The Blues.... It's about crossroads - night and day, light and dark, the place where they meet - that's where the blues lives. There are still such places out there in our world today. South Carolina is one place where that edge of light and dark exists. Out there in the bogs, down those roads that suddenly appear out of nowhere while you are on a summer jaunt driving to the beach or looking for a 'native bar or juke joint'. They aren't really hidden they exist in full sight - go to Charleston - thriving port city with cruise ships and a link to slavery and the civil war that refuses to be sanitized, yes go there and you will see those passageways to the other side. The Port City Prophets know these roads very well. The roads where redemption or condemnation are like Siamese twins joined at the heart. They live there, they know when to avoid and when to embrace, they are natives, whether born in the mud and muck or not, they have street cred to spare.. Their music is just that - native to the soul of humankind. It is defiant in it's approach and stubbornness to not be classified. There is an undeniable urgency to their music as they seem to fight against the maelstrom enjoying the sensation of their heads going under but fighting for dear life to resurface wiser, and more accomplished than before. Well written lyrics that speak to the heart and soul that are sung with a raw passion that belies the singers years. Guitar treated as an instrument of inclusion knowing when to take center stage but always there with a chordal framework that almost seems like an inside joke to fellow players, and the drums. These are the drums that your parents warned you about. Yes indeed, back in the darker days drums were banned for they were thought of as a secret language of the slaves. The Planetary Blues Band, hailing from the Midwest United States, is a blues rock mix of energy and emotion. The band consists of three brothers, Martin (guitar and vocals), Michael (guitar and vocals), and Bobby (bass) Schaefer-Murray, and their longtime friend, Nick Evans (drums). The quartet formed in 1999 in Valparaiso, Indiana, and have played regional bars and festivals since. In June of 2013, PBB released their fifth release entitled, Once Upon A Time In The South Loop. The album was self-released, and according to their bio, the album was self-recorded and self-produced. Although modern technology has made DIY recording and producing more affordable it is still risky for a band to take on such a task. The album opens with See That My Grave Is Kept Clean. This is a new arrangement of a track by the legendary Blind Lemon Jefferson, also known as the Father of Texas Blues. The PBB version is an upbeat rock song, and a worthy tribute to the original. The song has a great hook that makes it hard not to tap your foot to it. The Thorns Will Show You is the second track on the album. At first I wasn’t sure if I would like this song, but then I heard the solo. This tune rocks out with some great guitar solo work full of feeling! While the main rhythm line could be more interesting, The vocals are good and the solo is well worth playing several times over.
This Precious Existence is a slow dance blues rock ballad. The lyrics suggest we make the most of what we have. While it is a bit slow for my taste, the guitar work is good and the message upbeat. Also, another song worth listening to just for the guitar solo.
That’s No Way To Get Along is reminiscent of a gospel song. It has a rockabilly feel to it with a walking base line and driving snare beat that builds throughout the song to make it infectious. This song is a cover of a well-known track by the Rev. Robert Wilkins.
This is possibly my favorite track on the album. I think of sitting in a lively church revival in a tent on a summer day clapping along with the band. The lyrics are not really church material, though they do speak of a prodigal son returning home to his mother after a rough time with women.
The fifth track is Sacred and Profane Blues. This song is blues rock in its truest form. Great guitar work and a solid rhythm line make this song another solid album hit. Listing to the lead guitar, I hear a Stevie Ray Vaughn or Gary Moore style; the guitars really jam on this track.
Blues Resurrection is another great guitar driven jam. I think the song describes itself best… “I don’t know if the Blues is alive, I just know it won’t let me be.” The song has dirty and sleazy written all over it. The rhythm lines strut along unshamefully as the guitar drips emotion all over. I can see a dark smokey club with the lights harsh upon the stage. The band, sweat rolling down there faces, oblivious of their audience, playing for all it’s worth.
Crazy Cryin’ Blues is a cover of a Memphis Minnie song. Memphis Minnie was a female artist, popular in the 1930s and 1940s, playing blues which was a genre dominated by men. The PBB version is reminiscent of the 60s jam band sound, with a solid beat and hook.
In A Blue Study is another favorite of mine. The song has a folk blues feel to it. It is gentle and upbeat, and appears to tell the story of a man who gets into trouble for going against the grain. I have to say, I like this song so much that I listened to it over and over.
When I Say I Love You is another classic blues jam. Listening to this song reminds me of Stormy Monday by T-Bone Walker. It has a slow steady progression, which is accentuated with drums and guitars.
The Shillelagh closes the album, and is a fun, upbeat 60s style instrumental jam. This is a great track to close the album on. There is some interesting guitar work, a solid beat, and an interesting base line.
Overall, I enjoyed Once Upon A Time In The South Loop. For a self-produced album, the quality is good. The guitars sound bright and the drums crisp. I think the bass could have been clearer. It is buried back in the mix and would have sounded stronger had it been brought forward. Being a traditional bass-tone made it hard to pick out at times.
If you are into the blues-rock, jam band sound, you will like this album. Even if you are not a blues fan, several of the tracks on this album, such as In A Blue Study or The Shillelagh are fun and upbeat, and warrant giving it a listen.
As for the Planetary Blues Band, I think they do well in carrying on the blues heritage in this modern-day. Someday, I need to catch them live and experience their vibe first hand. In the mean time, I will look for their earlier releases and eagerly await the next.

Metro Blues has been gaining in popularity in Southern Colorado at a steady pace since its inception in 1999. First “paying dues” by playing the bars, then moving on to become the opening act for headliners at the Colorado Music Hall.  In 2002 Metro Blues won the “Melody Award” in the Blues category of the Colorado Springs Music Awards. Later that year they performed at the Pikes Peak Blues Fest and closed out the year by releasing their first all original CD. In 2003 the band performed at the Trinidaddio Blues Festival and Belvedere Blues Festival ~The Soundguy reviews (2004) .

A former cover band that primarily focused on Joe Bonamassa presents its debut album with original material, except, of course, for two tracks that connoisseurs will... er, recognize. Sure, "The Hard Way" and "The Ballad Of John Henry" come from the great German idol (where they come from, by the way, is thankfully rarely revealed), but the fresh material from BLUES DELUXE, as the abbreviation deciphers, is also clearly oriented towards the former blues prodigy, which is evident in Dennis Eminger's vocals, but also in the occasionally luscious guitar tone (title track) and the occasionally richly note-rich solos on the six-string. Compositionally, however, there's still room for improvement, again compared to the original, because American mainstream music takes some getting used to, even if it sounds so light-hearted to the accustomed ear. The band has mastered classic slow sounds like "Blues In D-Flat," "Help Me," and "I Don't Care" admirably, while "Never Going Back" sounds rather tired. The cover songs also remain more of a must than a choice, but those who lift heavy run the risk of breaking their bones, but that's not the case with BDL. "Nowhere Else To Go," as well as the organ-driven "Still Breathing," with its tasteful electric piano and Southern feel, are sure to be a must-listen. "Bitter Man," on the other hand, has something of Kenny Wayne Shepherd about it, another mainstreamer whom BDL can't match, which they don't really need to. Either way, it's pleasing that the musician can wear blue here too without appearing too conservative. CONCLUSION: BDL certainly aren't "The New Blues-Rock Sensation," as they call themselves, but "Retribution" is the first commercial blue-collar band to cross the finish line in the upper midfield and sounds absolutely competitive internationally. Though New Orleans understandably gets most of the attention when it comes to Louisiana music, there is a diversity of styles appreciated as one moves around the state. The northern city of Monroe, is home to Louisiana Soul Revival, which as their name infers, packs a hard hitting combination of blues, funky and soul under the direction of singer/songwriter/keyboardist Doug Duffey.
A native of Monroe, Duffey came up playing keys around the south in a multitude of bands before heading out to Los Angeles in the 1970's to make a name for himself as a funk oriented songwriter. He has continued to compose and perform and this is his latest project; writing all of the material, which was arranged and produced by guitarist Dan Sumner. A good blues,funk/soul band has to have a tight horn section, and LSR is no exception, demonstrating high competency in executing complicated charts.
"Funky Bidneh," begins with the requisite wah-wah guitar, and dominant vocal refrain, with the horn men quickly defining the groove. "It Ain't What You Do" has an infectious scratchy rhythm, leading up to a brief but crisp solo by altoist Mason Howard. A hint of Tower of Power comes through in "I Don't Need Ya Anyway," with the gritty organ pushing and pulling the action. Duffey handles all the lead vocals, displaying a genuine southern flavor, which is enhanced by the stellar backing vocals of Betsy Love and Naomi Holder. These ladies take over on "Do It Right," and prove that there is no substitute for the woman's touch.
New Orleans vocalist Chuck Carbo comes to mind on "1-900-For-Love," a classic R&B number reminiscent of jukebox hits from when this music was in its prime. They come back with a vengeance on "The Joke Is On You" and glide into the smooth side of soul on "Just For Tonight." Here, Duffey shows his acquired singing ability, a flashback to the slick Gamble and Huff era of the '70's. The funk gumbo continues on "B What R Ya," before wrapping it up with "Love Into My Life," an obvious dance favorite, thrusted by the ferocious bass of Ben Ford, who did a remarkable job throughout the session, as this music demands a fierce low end.
Louisiana Soul Revival is an active performing and touring ensemble, that is why the audio presence is so animated, for it's difficult to pull this off with studio musicians. They have a throwback soul sound that requires precise instrumentation and rhythm, so it resonates with authenticity and authority. As guitarist/arranger Dan Sumner states, "it's a big, blasting, full sound...that speaks brashly of Louisiana's funk future."

The Pappy Johns Band is a Canadian blues band whose core members have been performing together for over 30 years. Don Powless (bass), Murray Porter (vocals/keyboards) and Oren Doxtator (drums), met in 1978, and played together in the Bar Road Band. Faron Johns later joined the group, and in 2003 the group added the services of singer–songwriter and guitarist, Josh Miller, for their album tourFull Circle. Joseph Michael Mahfoud recorded the studio tracks for the Full Circle CD. Joseph started the tour, but could not finish due to family obligations. The Pappy Johns Band is known to Canadian television audience for being the house band on Aboriginal Peoples Television Networks’ variety program Buffalo Tracks.
The Pappy Johns Band won the award for Best Group/Duo at the 2002 Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards. Band members won three additional awards: for Best Male Artist (Faron Johns); Best Song & Songwriter for Blame It On Monday (Faron Johns); and Best Producer/Engineer (Alec Fraser & Band).
In November 2004 the band won Best Blues Album at the 2004 Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards for Full Circle and they were 2005 Juno Awards nominees for Aboriginal Recording of the Year for Full Circle.
In November 2009 The Pappy Johns Band won again for Best Blues Album @ The Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards for "Havin' A Good Time Now".
Don Powless – bass guitar, is a Mohawk originally from the Six Nations Reserve, but currently resides in Fort Erie, Ontario. In addition to The Pappy Johns Band, Powless has played in blues bands that include Bar Road Band, The Roadhouse Band, and Painted Pony.
Oren Doxtator – drums, is originally from the Oneida Settlement (near London, Ontario), but he grew up in Buffalo, New York. Currently a resident of Fort Erie, Ontario, Powless and his brother-in-law Oren have formed a solid rhythm section for over 30 years.
John Lee – Piano/vocals, is originally from St. Stephen, New Brunswick, Canada, but currently resides in Kitchener Ontario, has toured and written songs with Matt Minglewood, Mel Brown & The Homewreckers and Beverly Mahood.
Josh Arden Miller: guitar/vocals, is also a Mohawk from Six Nations. Miller plays guitar and vocals. He toured across Canada with Murray Porter while still a teenager. In addition to be a member of The Pappy Johns Band, he also fronted his own bands, The Soul Kings and Three Wheel Drive.

Atlanta, Georgia-based roots musician Mudcat aka Daniel Peter Dudeck is back with some exciting slices of good old blues music, not shying away from rock ‘n’ roll and doo-wop influences. Self released by Johnny in 2010 this was a return disc after a 7 year absence from the Chicago music scene. The 13 tracks are made up of 11 covers and 2 written by Johnny. The covers are wide ranging from Buddy Guy, Jesse Thomas, T-Bone Walker to Bobby King, Jimmy Dawkins and Son Seals. What we have here is Johnny and his tight band working these tunes from their perspective and of course Johnny tops it off with his fine guitar and his very soulful vocals. This is excellent stuff and was recorded primarily in one 6 hour session. Recommended as are the other discs in the Rockin Johnny catalogue. See him live when you have the opportunity.

"Rediscovered by Hammond Scott, Lloyd Lambert and Jeff Hannusch, James "Thunderbird" Davis finally finds the opportunity to record a first complete album. This is a superb achievement produced by brothers Hammond & Nauman Scott. Behind James, there is an all-star backing band with Clarence Hollimon, Anson Funderburgh, Ron Levy, Lloyd Lambert, Grady Gaines, Mark "Kaz" Kazanoff. Particularly at ease, James performs his repertoire - covers and original compositions - between Blues and brassy Rhythm & Blues. Some remarkable gems like "I'm ready now", "You did me wrong", "Check out time", "What else is there to do", "Come by here", "I should've known better".
Thought by many to be deceased, singer James Davis returned from musical invisibility to make this sparkling comeback set for Black Top. His hearty pipes sounding anything but over-the-hill, Davis roared a combination of his own fine tunes and remakes of songs first done by Bobby Bland, James Carr, and Wynonie Harris in front of a terrific combo (guitarists Anson Funderburgh and Clarence Hollimon, saxist Grady Gaines). A revival of his own slow blues "Your Turn to Cry" recalled Davis's early-'60s glory days" ~ Eric S.(1990).
