OVERDRIVE is not a retro blues album. It's a statement. Eleven tracks moving between earthy blues, modern rock and uncompromising attitude - like an amp pushed right to the edge. Recorded raw, driven by real performance and pressure. From the opener "Hell Yeah (Here I Am)" to the closing "Ain't the Man", the album follows a clear line: no excuses, no masks - movement as an answer, not an escape. "Streets Are Golden" speaks to those who fall and keep going, while "Cash Smash Boogie" cuts through the myth of money with groove and irony.A key moment is the duet "You Can't Beat Time" - two voices in tension, no romance. One truth remains: time doesn't play. It wins.OVERDRIVE isn't nostalgia. It's the present - built with pressure and grit, shaped in real time on the street of life.

10. Things Left Undone (Live) - 5:05

With the release of Truth in the Room, her first comprehensive live album, Janiva Magness has delivered the document her fans have long been waiting for — proof, captured on record, of what she has always done live: make a room stop, listen, and feel. Recorded in front of an intimate gathering of 150 invited friends and music industry guests by the legendary Bob Clearmountain, it is a milestone that crowns more than three decades of one of the most honest and enduring careers in American blues. Live performance has always been at the heart of who she is, something that earned her the honor of the B.B. King Entertainer of the Year award. Fans have clamored for years for a live album that could capture what they experience in the room with her — that ineffable electricity, the give-and-take between artist and audience, the sense that something unrepeatable is happening in real time. That moment has finally arrived with "Truth in the Room", out this summer on Blue Élan Records. The track listing reads as both a retrospective and a living document: "Bad Luck Soul," "Slipped, Tripped, and Fell In Love," "Make It Rain," "You Were Never Mine," "That's What Love Will Make You Do," "The Devil Is An Angel Too," "Closer," "Hammer," "Love Wins Again," and "The Things Left Undone." Drawn from across the arc of her catalog, the ten tracks represent the full spectrum of Magness's artistry — the grit and the grace, the humor and the heartbreak, the defiance and the tenderness. Heard together in this live setting, they tell the story of a career and a life lived with uncommon courage and conviction (https://blueelan.com/products/truth-in-the-room-the-clearmountain-sessions-digital-album).

11. There Will Be a Light - 3:06

Intimate and Powerful Southern Blues From Northern Ireland.
After first being introduced to it by my friend, the late lamented Bap Kennedy; I’ve had a soft spot for the vastly underrated Northern Irish music scene for nigh on 20 years now.
One of my favourite discoveries was the band The 2:19; arguably the best pub-rock/R&B band I never got to see.
While the band are on something of a hiatus; Chris Chalmers and Marty Young have taken a new left of centre direction on this powerful release.
The title track, the crunchy and spine tingling, Way Back Home opens proceedings with the pair diving headlong into their love of Southern Blues on a punchy song drenched in harmonica and spooky organ (Paul Winn of DC Blues, and organ from Marty Young).
I’ve always gauged albums by the ability of an opening track being able to attract my attention; and Way Back Home certainly does that.
The mood quickly changes for Track 2, Over The Edge, a beautifully charminglaid back Bluesy love song full of steel guitar and a lilt in Chalmers’ voice that reminds me of latter day Chris Rea; the way he uses words and tones to squeeze your heartstrings with a velvet glove.
It’s not made clear which if any of the songs are based on real people and events; as everything, right from that powerful opener, sound deeply personal and ‘real,’ not least When You Start Drinking which left my mouth agape the first couple of times I played it. Sung in the first person about a lover/partner with a ‘drinking problem’ that they won’t admit to; as the singer pleads with them to give up and save the relationship.
The song also contains some of my favourite ‘lines’ that I’ve heard in a long time.
“You won’t get no sponsor
 You won’t go to AA
Don’t come asking for my kidneys when it all goes astray!”
There are plenty more couplets I wanted to quote; but I’ll leave it to you to discover them, and more yourself.
These deeply personal songs all sound as if Chalmers has been hoarding them forever, not least the haunting love song Two Blue Diamonds and the darkly charming Until I Do both of which feature some exquisite acoustic guitar playing.
For a deceptively ‘simple’ album; Chalmers and Young take us on something of an emotional and musical rollercoaster ride on an album that isn’t afraid to juxtapose the heartbreaking Six White Horses between another crusty Southern Blues in Sinking and Like a Stone that sounds as if it should be played at a New Orleans wake!
Obviously all music is subjective and your pleasure is dictated by the mood you, as the listener is in … which brings me to my Favourite song the finale, There Will Be a Light, a hymnal that features sublime backing vocals from Suzy Coyle and some very church like organ playing by John McCulloughn; on a song that sounds hugely influenced by Sam Cooke if I dare say.
That beauty is pipped at the post by the splendid God Is a Cynic; in many ways a ‘song of our times’ that sounds like a co-write between Leonard Cohen and Randy Newman … and again, sung by Chris Rea.
While many, if not all these songs are ‘sad’ in content; but that doesn’t stop the album being a ‘must listen’ exercise, especially if you’re going through your own ‘issues’ then it’s the perfect accompaniment to a strong cup of coffee and packet of Hob Nobs (https://rockingmagpie.wordpress.com).

The Bad News Blues Band is one of Arizona’s finest bands. For years they’ve played the Hot Licks Barbecue in Bisbee, Arizona and over the years some of those shows have become legendary for their stage antics, walking on the bar, etc. So it all made sense when they decided to record a live album to do it at Hot Licks and let the chips fall where they may. The result, Live at Hot Licks, comes as close to capturing the energy of Bad News at their best as you can find. The project was so successful it generated a two-disc set, one of un-recorded new originals and the other a disc of the group’s classic songs from previous releases. An ambitious project to say the least, but the result is definitely worth it.

Rock’n’Roll had a mama and they called her the Blues.
Ladies and gentlemen, may we introduce: Honey Hush. We celebrate the music that gave rise to most of today’s music—born in the American South of the 1930s, coming of age in 1950s Chicago, and gaining hype in the Swinging London of the 60s. Matured across the globe. Twelve bars—a recurring ritual that nonetheless sounds fresh with every pass. We are very proud to have taken first place at the Vestischer Blues Award in June 2024—on our very first attempt! The jury, consisting of blues experts Peter Hempowicz, Jürgen Grenz, Jochen Bottländer, Marco Böhmer, and Mike Moscheuy, selected us for the top spot on the podium!
Honey Hush is deeply rooted in American roots music. This music is straightforward, allowing Honey Hush to deliver compelling and impactful interpretations of vintage classics. Honey Hush’s songs are full of double meanings, for the blues is a secret language; for instance, calls to come into the kitchen and bake bread have little to do with the culinary arts. In their own original songs, Honey Hush explores classic blues themes alongside contemporary issues, such as our AI-driven world.

Jesper Lindell - Royal

3. Sweeter Tomorrow - 3:29
4. I Can't Stand The Rain - 2:45

7. No Easy Way Down - 2:49
8. Tryin' To Live My Life Without You - 2:49
9. Whicha Way Did It Go - 2:42

Jesper Lindell takes his soul pilgrimage to Memphis on Royal, bringing new life to classic songs originally recorded at the legendary Royal Studios. Jesper Lindell’s Royal finds the Swedish soul singer standing inside one of American music’s most hallowed spaces, Memphis’ legendary Royal Studios, bringing a lifelong passion for soul music full circle. In 2024, Lindell and his band, the Brunnsvik Sounds, crossed the Atlantic in search of the music that shaped them. With just four days booked between two iconic studios, Muscle Shoals Sound Studio in Alabama and Royal Studios in Memphis, they set out to immerse themselves in the sounds they had admired for years. The sessions yielded enough material for two albums. The first became 3614 Jackson Highway, a celebration of the Muscle Shoals legacy. Royal picks up the story in Memphis.Walking into Royal Studios meant stepping into the same room where Al Green, Ann Peebles, Otis Clay, and Syl Johnson recorded some of the defining soul records of the last century. Welcomed by studio owner and engineer Boo Mitchell, son of Hi Records legend Willie Mitchell, Lindell and his band quickly found themselves surrounded by history. The jet lag may have been real, but so was the adrenaline that came with recording in such a legendary setting. The album pays tribute to both the famous and the overlooked corners of the Memphis soul tradition. Lindell and his band put their stamp on songs associated with artists including Elvis Presley, Otis Redding, the Staple Singers, Dusty Springfield, Willie Nelson, Rod Stewart, and the Box Tops, while also shining a light on the work of Margie Joseph, Dan Penn, Donnie Fritts, Tony Joe White, and the Amazing Rhythm Aces. Their approach is rooted in admiration, treating the material as an opportunity to better understand the craft behind songs that have stood the test of time. That spirit of discovery has been central to Lindell's career. Raised in the lakeside town of Ludvika, Sweden, he built his reputation on a deep appreciation for classic soul, roots rock, and Americana. Releases like Twilights and Before the Sun established him as one of the leading voices in the growing Scandinavian soul-rock scene, blending vintage influences with songwriting that feels personal and immediate. On Royal, Lindell completes the second half of an ambitious musical pilgrimage. Recorded in one of soul music's most storied rooms, the album celebrates the enduring power of Memphis music while highlighting the universal connection that great songs create, regardless of where they originate.

One such show was recorded live on April 25, 2000, in Stuttgart, Germany, for broadcast on the Ohne Filter -- Music Pur TV program, which has been reissued for DVD as part of the ongoing In Concert series. McLagan and the Bump Band (which consists of a pair of guitarists, bass, and drums, in addition to McLagan's keys and vocals) are in fine form throughout, mixing up selections from all phases of their leader's career, including such highlights as the show-opening instrumental "Can't Be Still," as well as "I Will Follow," "Whatcha Gonna Do About It," "Cindy Incidentally," and "Warm Rain," among others.

&copy Greg Prato /TiVo

He possesses an undeniable gift for captivating an audience and building excitement—naturally, without gimmicks or flashiness—always backed by seasoned musicians who give their all while remaining slightly in the background. This quality comes through on his albums, and this release is no exception. After spending over twenty years backing soul artists, he has established himself as a leading figure on the festival circuit in Europe and the US, and as one of the artists breathing new life into the Memphis soul scene—as evidenced by his previous album, *Memphis Still Got Soul*. On this record, as on the one to follow, he pays tribute to the people who inspired him and helped him reach his current standing. This CD is sure to satisfy anyone looking to capture the essence of his live performances; it is authentic and sincere in spirit, and worlds away from the flashy, bombastic soul often produced by young artists—talented though they may be—who are manipulated by producers unwilling to grant them the creative freedom they need to flourish.

BLOSSBLUEZ creates music that appeals equally to the head, the gut, and the heart: a "soulful, funky, rocking, jazzy blues fusion"! In addition to vocals, guitar, and harmonica, the seven-piece band’s sound is shaped by its outstanding horn section. Based in Singen (Hohentwiel), the group has been active since 1980.
The seven musicians of BLOSSBLUEZ have cultivated a unique style—yet it remains blues in the truest sense, even when they perform original compositions. The band blends funk and soul elements with the blues and experiments with jazz-oriented tracks. Originally founded over 45 years ago in Freiburg, the group was revived in 2005 and now presents itself as musically mature and stylistically expanded.
BLOSSBLUEZ brings together seasoned musicians from the Lake Constance region to Freiburg; together, they explore the emotional depth of the blues and infuse it with their own personal touch.
Carlo Schultheiss (Singen) is the voice of BLOSSBLUEZ. He also plays blues harmonica and handles the Hammond organ and piano, adding a solid foundation to the band's sound.
Martin Aichele (Buchenbach near Freiburg) has played in a wide variety of groups, including a stint in Berlin with the band of blues shouter Eb Davis. He brings this wealth of experience to the band, utilizing a broad expressive range on the electric guitar.
Werner Englert (Emmendingen) is a prominent musical figure in Freiburg and the surrounding area. He enriches the band with his saxophone and flute playing, regularly captivating audiences with highly expressive improvisations. He has also received the Federal Cross of Merit for various music education projects.
Saxophonist Michael Zolg (Freiburg) was a member of the original lineup and is an outstanding soloist; he spent many years touring Europe as a professional musician. Klaus Dindorf (Pfullendorf) rounds out the band as a trombonist. An accomplished improviser, he has toured with American blues greats such as harmonica virtuoso Carey Bell.
There are few true blues bassists—musicians who specialize specifically in blues grooves—but Sebastian Lorenz (Freiburg) is one of them. When not on the road with BLOSSBLUEZ, he plays in the band of American guitarist Tino Gonzales.
Finally, Tom Wagener (Markdorf) is the quintessential blues drummer; the fact that he has accompanied blues legends like Louisiana Red, Rudy Rotta, Steve Clayton, and Carey Bell—and currently plays drums for the legendary rock band "Them"—speaks for itself.
The band frequently invites guest musicians to the stage, such as the German-American blues legend Guitar Crusher ("the big voice from New York"), with whom they toured in the autumn of 2017 and recorded the album *Cooking Live!* (Inakustik), released in 2018.
The stylistic range of BLOSSBLUEZ extends from West Coast blues to fully arranged, horn-driven urban blues. Their distinctive mix is rich in tonal color, taking the audience on an exciting musical journey that appeals not only to die-hard blues fans but also to jazz listeners who appreciate interesting, expressive improvisation.
