For some time now—and a welcome trend it is—we have been witnessing a resurgence of female blues singers in France, such as Sophie Kay, Véronique Sauriat, and Gladys Amoros. Now, thanks to this album from a Nantes-based quartet, we discover the immensely talented Christelle Naggiar. She possesses charisma, vocal power, and a commanding stage presence, with a voice reminiscent of both Lou Ann Barton and Maggie Bell (of Stone the Crows).
This lovely brunette, with her captivating and deeply expressive voice, is a key asset to the band—but she isn't alone! She is joined by a superb drummer—Denis Agenet, formerly of Mudzilla and Oldbluesters—backed by the impassioned bassist Maxime Marchand. And as good surprises rarely come singly, there is the icing on the cake: a formidable guitarist with a vigorous, invigorating style—Felipe Grohan.
This superb lineup goes by the name BAD MULES, and they are serving up their first "wheel of cheese": *In Your Stall*. It is a delicious offering—bold in flavor, rich and creamy, and utterly appetizing! As friendly neighbors, pianist Cedric Legoff (of The Flyin' Saucers) and harmonica player Kevin Doublé (of Scratch My Back) add their seasoned touch to a few tracks.
The album features ten songs: seven covers and three originals penned by Christelle and Denis. From the energy of boogie-woogie and the spellbinding allure of swing to spirited shuffles and sultry slow blues, this record is pure bliss. Best of all, the feeling of stepping into a realm reserved for the gods only grows stronger with every track.
"All Right, Ok, You Win" sets the tone. They brilliantly breathe new life into JB Lenoir’s "Mojo Boogie." Moore’s "Caldonia" is deconstructed with a West Coast feel. With the superb slow blues track "Not My Man"—written by Naggiar—we get a true sense of each musician's strengths. A real gem! We’re back in the groove, swaying to Turner’s "Match Box." Then, the heavy, purring sound of the Windy band grabs our ears with Magic Sam’s "You Belong To Me." Next up is "On The Run"—featuring the Belle and the drummer—with its emphatic guitar work. On Billy Branch’s "Where’s My Money," the talent is immediately palpable, matched by a fierce desire to share the joy of playing together. Finally, the California-style phrasing of "T-Bone Intentions" unfolds with great finesse, wrapping up this expertly crafted ten-track set—a truly successful musical alchemy. Warm and sparkling!
