Mother Of The Crossroads is Brigitte Purdy's second album, a record on which traditional blues, soul, and blues rock are given a contemporary interpretation. This distinctive interpretation is partly thanks to the great architect behind this album, producer and multi-instrumentalist Dave Osti. Brigitte Purdy, originally from Los Angeles, has been active in the music world for years. She has shared the stage with Walter Trout, Sugaray Rayford, Dionne Warwick, and Dolly Parton, among others, and provided backing vocals for The Who and Paul Rodgers. Her voice is versatile, powerful, soulful, and warm. Brigitte is an admirer of B.B. King, a mandate she gave Dave Osti, but emphatically in her own direction.
Dave Osti is no stranger; he has performed as a one-man band, released albums under the name Dirty Dave Osti, and is the owner of Grooveyard Records. He wrote all nine compositions, six of which were co-written with Brigitte Purdy, and handles the majority of the instrumentation. From guitars and piano to bass and drums: Dave puts his stamp on every song, without taking away Brigitte's role. On the contrary, his clear production creates exactly the space in which Brigitte comes into her own. Hammond player Drake Shining makes an important contribution to the album; his warm B3 tones bring an extra dimension.

From the opener “Sugar Fried Candy,” it becomes clear that Brigitte Purdy did not intend to make a traditional twelve-bar blues record. The solid groove, subtle guitar work, and approach give the song a fresh feel. “Blues Collar Woman” also combines blues with funk and soul, supported by a strong organ part from Drake Shining and a convincing vocal performance from Brigitte.
“Memphis Hotline” is followed by a swaying shuffle, a tribute to the birthplace of the blues, while the title track “Mother Of The Crossroads” forms the mystical heart of the record. Without falling into clichés, Brigitte sings about the rich mythology surrounding 'the Crossroads'. “Losin Time For Love” and “Too Full Of You” lean more on southern blues rock, complete with tasteful slide guitar, while “Make Love Higher” makes room for a subdued, soulful ballad. On “Come To Mama,” the tempo picks up again and Dave Osti demonstrates that he is also an excellent guitarist; the harmonica is played by Michael Fell. The closer, “Rise Like The Water,” is a song Brigitte has had in her repertoire for some time, and it convincingly rounds off the album in a powerful, almost gospel-like atmosphere. What impresses most is the natural balance between tradition and new directions that Brigitte and Dave captured. Brigitte Purdy possesses a voice that effortlessly switches between power and vulnerability, with songs that offer enough variety to keep the album interesting from start to finish.
