*Vienna Session* is an acoustic blues album—recorded in Vienna using traditional methods—featuring wonderful blues gems from the 1930s through the 1960s, rounded out by original compositions from the two musicians. Walter Baumgartner—a Swiss singer, harmonica player, and 2016 Swiss Blues Award winner—teamed up with his friend Hannes Kasehs, an Austrian singer and guitarist, to record this spontaneous, exciting, and blues-infused album in Vienna over the course of just a few days. Comprising nine tracks by artists such as Lightnin’ Hopkins and Big Walter Horton, alongside two original compositions, the album traces a cohesive musical arc across various blues styles—with touches of country and gospel—all performed acoustically and stripped down to the essentials..
Walter Baumgartner (vocals, harmonica) has been connected to the blues—likely before he even realized it himself—for ages. Consequently, he turned his former hobby, music, into his profession years ago. With his voice and harmonica, he captivates audiences, successfully championing this fundamental, down-to-earth, and pioneering musical style born among Black musicians in the American South.
Currently, his musical work focuses primarily on the band project "Walt’s Blues Box" and various duo formations—such as those with Acoustic Blues Drifter, Hannes Kasehs, and Michael Dolmetsch. He regularly tours both domestically and abroad with his fellow musicians. To date, he has contributed to over 23 CD productions, including 10 albums of his own. In 2016, Walter Baumgartner won the Swiss Blues Award in Basel.
Hannes Kasehs (vocals, guitar) is a passionate and brilliant blues guitarist and singer from Vienna who has spent over 20 years touring across Europe. He has shared the stage with many stars of the scene—such as John Primer (USA), Dave Myers (USA), Abi Wallenstein (DE), Larry Garner (USA), Katie Webster (USA), Louisiana Red (USA), Christian Dozzler (AT), 4some Blues (CH/A), and Norbert Schneider (A), to name but a few. He lives and breathes traditional blues music with genuine authenticity; his love for the genre is beautifully expressed through his guitar playing and vocals.
