Queen Esther is a performance artist, solo performer, actor, songwriter, lyricist, topliner, vocalist, producer, musician and storyteller.American musician Queen Esther has created an ambitious exceptionally concept album, but it's also surprisingly a versatile roots album that impresses musically and certainly vocally.Queen Esther is a completely new name to me, but it's one I'll be keeping an eye on from now on. The New York musician has a very varied career behind her, but on Blackbirding embraces American roots music. It's American roots music that can cover a remarkably broad range, and so can the American musician's voice. Queen Esther has also opted for a unique concept album, which requires some knowledge of the American Civil War, which makes her new album even more interesting, although it's also an album with songs that are easily convincing. A fine album. Apparently it's the week of the crushing opening tracks, because after the opening track of Jay Buchanan's album, Queen Esther also managed to overwheel me with the first track of the new album Blackbirding, which I discovered through the newsletter of promoter Angela Backstrom. It's a track that musically sparks the imagination, but Queen Esther does so primarily with her skilled voice. I'd never heard of Queen Esther before, but she's been around for a while and has a handless good of albums to her name. These albums cover a broad musical spectrum, and music is reportedly just one of the many areas in which Queen Esther is active. The opening track of her new album immediately and held my attention, and the other tracks on the album are also top-notch. American roots music takes center stage on Blackbirding, but it can go in any direction. The New York musician has also created a remarkably ambitious album. Part of that is the theme, as Blackbirding is a concept album about the Battle of Gettysburg, one of the defining moments of the American Civil War. Queen Esther describes the Battle of Gettysburg from both the perspective of a Black American and a feminist perspective, which are interesting perspectives.Blackbirding is as a fascinating album musically, as secondly Queen Esther's incorporates different influences into her songs. One moment she delivers pure country soul with a beautiful role for the pedal steel, while the album as well as features jazzy songs and tracks that verever toward vintage soul and gospel, or toward R&B and pop. Blackbirding not only transitions easily between genres but also moves through time, with songs that sound contemporary and songs that could be decades old. The American musician self-produced her album, wrote the lyrics, and provided lead vocals. Her vocals are and impressive the album song by song. The New York-based musician possesses a raw soul voice, but she also has a knack for variety and beautiful delivery. It's a voice that's easily convincing, yet highly distinctive. It's a voice that compellingly tells the album's story, keeping you listeningly intent to Blackbirding.I can easily imagine the album forming the base for an interesting theatrical performance, but Blackbirding as well as makes an impression as an album. Queen Esther relies on some very competent for the music on the album. I find the guitar work particularly beautiful, but the other musicians featured on Blackbirding as well as provide the album with a very tasteful sound. It's a sound that always serves Queen Esther's voice, but is also filled with beautiful accents, especially from string instruments. The beauty of Queen Esther's Blackbirding is that it's an album that sounds more ambitious and idiosyncratic than the average American roots album, but certainly not one full of pretentiousness. I'd never heard of Queen Esther before, but her new album is very interesting(https://queen-esther.com/blog/the_latest_news/blackbirding-album-review-de-krenten-uit-de-pop.html).
