 6. Wishing Tree - 7:03

The mighty fine but little known Southern rock outfit, Edgehill Avenue, are back with Just Out of Sight, another workmanlike effort worthy of your consideration. After Rambler, their excellent full-length debut, showed off their musical chops and songwriting capabilities they followed it with a brief live CD, Off the Edge, that proved they're also a great stage band. As with all of Dixie's best rockers this Kentucky quintet functions as a complete unit. They put the band and the music ahead of personality or stardom. Their new release is an honest, six-song EP that relies on heartfelt lyrics, an appropriately earthy lead singer (Drew Perkins) who complements the songs perfectly, and good musicianship from everyone involved. Even though this mid-tempo disc is not as eclectic as their debut you will still find a lot to like about it, right down to the pleasing cover art. While Southern rock was extremely popular in the 70s, and it never completely went away, the days when groups like The Allman Brothers Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and The Outlaws all reached the top of the American music charts are long gone. There are a lot of rock fans who miss the genuineness these bands offered and we should be grateful to Perkins and his group for their attempts to help the South rise again. Dickie Betts once wrote a song for the Allmans' called "Revival" and that is just what we need. Hopefully Edgehill Avenue can lead the way.

What makes our band unique and eclectic is that each member brings his own influence to the music. We all come from different backgrounds in our musical pursuits and this is evident in our sound. When it comes to hard-hitting blues guitar, Kenny 'Blue' Ray is the real deal. Every once in a while someone comes along who pleasantly reminds one that there is some uncharted talent ready to explode on the blues scene, and this is the moment for Ray! A Bay Area resident, Ray is considered one of the top guitarists around; certainly one of the most prolific performers on the West Coast, if not the country. He performed in London, England from 1969-72 and he has 14 solo albums released, all of which have received strong reviews - the British publication, Blues & Rhythm, has consistently listed his releases among the top 10 selling albums in England. Ray is a guitar instrumentalist of the less is more school, who conveys a control and mastery of each note; a musician who knows no limit to tone. In Mick Rainsford's review of Ray's "Pull the Strings"album in Blues & Rhythm magazine, he wrote "...if you have any interest whatsoever in blues guitar playing of the highest quality, be it that big fat Texas tone of Albert Collins, the slashing chords and swing of T-Bone Walker, Hendrix-inspired distorted aggression, the deep blues tone and feel of all the Kings, or searing licks we associate with SRV, then you have no option other than to discover for yourself what Kenny Blue Ray is all about." Kenny 'Blue' Ray was a long-time fixture in the Marcia Ball Band while living in Texas and teamed with Stevie Ray Vaughan on Ball's "Soulful Dress" album on Rounder. He has also performed with Albert Collins, Ronnie Earl, Earl King, Hollywood Fats, William Clarke, Big Joe Turner and Pee Wee Crayton, to name a few.

Edgehill Avenue - Rambler

Tracks Listing:
 1. Rambler - 4:50

 8. Holding On - 6:02
 9. Out of Time - 5:14
10. Justified - 0:42
11. Justified (Radio Edit) - 3:54

Dense with bold Southern rock-style anthems, Allman Brothers-like swirling jams, and jangly countrified folk-rock – Edgehill Avenue’s  album Rambler is powerful, memorable music. The opening title cut is a heavy statement, a blues-rocker about abolitionist Frederick Douglass. The smoldering guitars are overlaid with big slabs of organ chords, and Drew Perkins’ voice is rich and dramatic. The driving “With These Hands” that follows is one of my favorites – again, Paul Nevitt provides soaring organ riffs, and the harmonic chorus lingers in my head. “Just Another Day” is simply wondrous – ringing guitars, another lusty vocal turn from Perkins, and an overall lilting, psychedelic feel like a good Allmans tune. The guys take a bluesy turn with the Black Crowes-esque “Don’t Come Around Here Anymore.” Lead guitarist “Hurricane” Mike McLaughlin fires off stinging lines, and Daphne Luster contributes soulful backing vocals. And “I’ll Be Leaving Now” is a nice detour, a pretty acoustic-based folk number. Another mellow delight, “Out Of Time,” comes later in the disc – McLaughlin’s crisp solo on that one is a treat, and a departure from his searing electric work.
“Just Don’t Care Anymore” is a nifty partyin’ song, choogling along at a brisk rockabilly clip with more blasts of Hurricane’s guitar and sweeps of barrelhouse piano from Nevitt. “Holding On” is richly textured atop the deep groove of John Poole’s bass and Lamont Melson’s drums – every instrument is given a chance to soar on this, the disc’s longest track. The set ends with the gospel/jazz/soul of “Justified,” a socially conscious bookend to the opening track. It’s as musically adventurous as “Holding On,” and the solos are brilliant. Edgehill Avenue’s Rambler inhabits a unique spot at the crossroads where heady jams meet down-home roots rock. And this is a band I would love to see and hear perform.

12. That's The Way Things Go - 2:50

Unlike most other current practitioners of the blues, guitarist-singer Cleveland Fats sticks pretty exclusively to the blues rather than peppering his set with rock, soul, blues ballads and pop songs. His passionate guitar solos and colorful vocals, along with a very good sense of timing and pacing, make The Way Things Go a superior blues set. Fats uses a basic quartet (with one of three keyboardists) and welcomes saxophonist Doc Thomas to six songs and the great veteran guitarist Robert Lockwood, Jr. and Billy Branch on harmonica to four numbers apiece. Tempos and moods change from song to song with an occasional instrumental tossed in for variety. Not only does Cleveland Fats' CD feature music that blues lovers will enjoy, but it is particularly recommended to listeners who think that all of the blues sound alike.© Scott Yanow /TiVo
