BASIC BLUE, the follow up to 2008’s debut effort “Eyes of the City”, consists of twelve selections all written produced and arranged by Agwada who again shows that he can span the gamut moving smoothly through a variety of styles. From the gutsy slide riff of the opening “Chi-Town State of Mind” to the infectious guitar riff and slick string arrangement of the title track “Basic Blue” Other highlights include “Blindsided” a rocker that features killer fretwork from Agwada who remains in top form all throughout this outing, the funky clavinet-laden “President”, “Black Rain” an atmospheric slow Blues that showcases blazing fretwork by Agwada and “Head Too Tight” a funky instrumental that is sure to remind listeners that the spirit of Albert Collins is alive and well in third-generation Bluesmen such as Agwada. A few surprises ensue, with former Rolling Stone and harmonica wunderkind, Sugar Blue as special guest on “Shake it Up” and “Right on Time”. Blues powerhouse Larry McCray contributes some tasty guitar to “Right on Time” as well. The Chicago Horns also return for an encore performance on “Shake it Up”/

Blues Traveler's frontman goes solo again, with an album that sounds a lot like the past. When members of bands go off on their own to do solo projects, it’s usually to fill a creative need they can’t shoehorn into their main gig. There are bouts of ego that come into play, but leaving cynicism aside, the majority of solo albums arise from artistic wanderlust, the idea that there’s always something new to try out. These flights of fancy don’t always work, and many times they become the cause of frustration both from band members who feel unappreciated, and from fans who can’t understand how the solo leanings of their favorite artists fit into their own notions of what music should be. Once in a while, however, a solo album will be confusing for a different reason; we can’t understand why it needed to be made at all. When John Popper stepped outside the limits of Blues Traveler with his first solo album, Zygote, at the height of their popularity, the reasons were obvious. The songs he had written were songwriter’s songs, the kind that needed a touch and nuance his band would not have been able to bring to them. Likewise, his second solo project, the obviously titled John Popper Project, found him grafting his persona atop thick beats, another endeavor that could not have happened in Blues Traveler. Assembling the Duskray Troubadours would seem to indicate another new experience on the way, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. This new project is not an insular bout of writing, nor a foray into unfamiliar sonic territory. The band and the album feel very much like the Blues Traveler of old, with the dials turned back ever so slightly. They have been turning the guitars up as they age, laying more and more keyboards into the thick soup of their sound, while the Troubadours strip away the excess, leaving a more organic sound that echoes large patches of the first four Blues Traveler albums. The most recent Blues Traveler album, North Hollywood Shootout, was conceived as an effort to bring more melody back into the mix. While that album fell short on many levels, it set the stage for the Troubadours, who pick up where that record left off, refining the sound and making sense of the mission. The similarity of tone is what makes this new project unusual; this isn’t music that would be foreign to a Blues Traveler album. The album’s origins have no bearing on the music, which is a welcome return to form for Popper. As Blues Traveler has evolved in recent years, his trademark harmonica playing has been buried beneath layers of keyboards and growling guitars. With more sonic room to himself, the hypersonic solos he perfected have been stolen from the past, albeit slowed down to match the pace of the music. Still, hearing him playing is a welcome bout of nostalgia, which is what the record as a whole tends to be.While “Something Sweet” comes and goes without a chorus, and a few others lack a visceral punch, melody is indeed the order of the day. The hooks aren’t towering, Popper’s voice doesn’t reach for the sheer volume he requires in Blues Traveler, but his knack for melody is undiminished. Every song has a memorable vocal line, once the songs have had time to unfold on repeated listens. The Troubadours have crafted a subtle album, one that feels in line with what the leader of a band entering its twenty-fifth year might be thinking; slowing down isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The reasons for this album might be questionable, but the music isn’t. What the Troubadours have provided is a reminder of why so many people fell in love with Blues Traveler all those years ago.

Accompanying Popper on this album is Carter Beauford (of the Dave Matthews Band) on drums, and Crugie Riccio on guitar, Rob Clores, and Dave Ares/.Forming Blues Traveler in 1987 with 3 high school pals, vocalist/harmonica player John Popper continues to play 200 dates per year with his band (Popper also remains the driving force behind the hugely successful H.O.R.D.E. Festival tour). Now comes John’s highly anticipated solo album debut. 12. Meet Me In Chicago (featuring. Rob McNelly) - 3:33
13. End Of The Line - 2:52

Tom Hambridge is a triple threat and perhaps the greatest secret weapon in the blues. He's an excellent drummer, an accomplished songwriter with his partner Richard Fleming, and a helluva producer who has worked with just about everyone in the business. As a result of being one of the busiest men in all of the blues, he doesn't get much of a chance to put out his own albums. When he does put out one, like his cent release Blu Ja Vu, it's a reason to rejoice. Of course, when he peppers it with friends like Buddy Guy, Joe Bonamassa, Christone "Kingfish" Ingram, and James Cotton, it becomes a must have disc.Other musicians include Hambridge on drums, percussion, and vocals; lead and rhythm guitars Rob McNelly; Bob Britt on guitar; Tommy MacDonald on bass; and Kevin McKendree and Jon Coleman on keyboards. Background vocals are by Emil Justin. Some of the other guest musicians are Josh Smith on guitar; Chuck Leavell on keyboards; and Glenn Worf on bass. The first track kicks off with Buddy Guy joining in the fun. Ain't It Just Like Love has Guy on guitar and vocals and McKendree's piano gets a strong workout. It's a raucous number that cements my thoughts that this is going to be a fun and exciting album. Next up is That's My Home which features Joe Bonamassa on vocals and guitar. His signature pyrotechnics are in full force and this song is a great follow up to Ain't It Just Like Love. This is a strong song. The following song, Wear You Out, growls its way into your ears. Hambridge's vocals are tough and menacing and play nicely off of McNeely's guitar licks. One of the rising stars of the blues, Christone "Kingfish" Ingram, features on Blues Don't Care. The lyrics are clever, and Ingram's guitar and vocals command the spotlight. This is a highlight on an already stellar album. Rob McNelly's guitar gets a real workout on Sick With Love. It gives strength to a song that if written and played by someone else might just become too sentimental. This version is exciting and has a real bite to it. One of the great blues tropes is the American automobile and Hambridge takes one out for a spin in Automatic. Not being a car guy, I will admit to not understanding many of the lyrics, but the song still made me want to get up and dance. Symptoms Of Love is a pounding, driving number and Hambridge's drummng and MacDonald's bass carry the song.Janes Cotton guests on the hard rocking number Brother John Boogie. This instrumental runs at the speed of a runaway freight train with no brakes. Just hold on and enjoy the ride because there's nothing else you can do! No guests on Get Outta Town but don't be upset, Hambridge and Company do a great job on this number. Especially McKendree's piano. Think of it as an updated version of Get Your Kicks On Route 66 and just enjoy the stellar musicianship. Josh Smith's guitar livens up the next song, Smarter Than I Was. How many times do we come out of a relationship with a better understanding of things than we had before we went in? An homage to the late great Johnny Winter follows. Hambridge wonders why Winter is not in the Hall Of Fame. After all, Winter "should have his name up in lights." Yes, the song is presented in a lighthearted manner, but the subject is very serious. Rob McNelly plays some mean guitar on Meet Me In Chicago. The song is fast paced, just like the city, and really pushes the envelope. Sometimes it's easy to forget just how good a drummer Hambridge is because of his other strengths in songwriting (here with Robert Randolph) and producing. Great little travelogue of The Windy City. "I'm the last one to turn out the light," sings Hambridge on End Of The Line. It's a poignant way to end the album as he looks back on his life and feels like he has still more to do. I can truly identify with the song as I ponder my own mortality while trying - in my own little way - to keep the blues alive. Powerful number. Tom Hambridge's work is impeccable, and Blu Ja Vu is easily one of the best albums of the year. Given his schedule, it can be difficult to catch him live but if you hear even a whisper that he is appearing near you, immediately purchase your tickets as you won't be disappointed. He's that damn good.

Zack Walther Band - The Westerner

Bitrate: 320K/s
Year: 2019
Time: 36:11
Size: 89,7 MB
Label: Assclown Rock N Roll
Styles: Rock/Blues
Art: Front

Tracks Listing:
 1. D F W - 3:19
 2. What Kind of Man - 3:29
 3. Payin' for It Now - 4:54
 4. I'm Going out of Your Mind - 3:15
 5. When the Show Comes to Town - 3:23
 6. Bad Girl - 3:38
 7. Casualty - 3:48
 8. Meet in the Middle - 3:15
 9. Hold on, I'm Comin' - 3:18
10. Bailey's Light - 3:46

With his long-time drummer and creative partner Matt Briggs, Zack Walther reassembles his eponymous band to release The Westerner, an LP comprised of 10 songs (seven of them new) in the Texas-steeped sound of blues-country rock. Mike Atkins (keys, bass, vocals) joins the duo along with a number of other musicians, creating a diverse set of tightly composed tunes that—with the exception of one five-minute song—all range from three to four minutes in length. Recorded at Briggs’s studio, the tandem incorporate a bevy of instruments and vary their voicings in such a way that no two songs sound the same. They also demonstrate a great grasp of the importance of space and nuance in music, and thus avoid the common pitfalls of oversaturation and overproduction. The instrumentation is excellent, even if technical virtuosity rarely displayed. There is a sense that it is present, but eschewed in favor of featuring the dual foci of Walther’s soulful voice and his direct, but witty lyrics. The album is about songs, not pageantry. Harmonies and backing vocals abound, both from the core members of the band and backing singers. There isn’t one track in the set where Walther’s voice is alone, and the backing singers are usually lending a hand.Leading with the single “D F W,” the band hints at their goal of providing an authentic listening experience by opening the song with amplifier noise, and heading directly into the main guitar-riff that is joined by a tight, unison synth harmony. The nifty pairing underpins a clever retelling of a tryst. It is easily accessible with simple, but great backing vocals. “What Kind of Man” haunts with chopping piano and deeply reverberated guitar that imbues the more traditional number with an eerie, swampy feeling. One of the album’s best, it showcases Walther’s vocal abilities and cuts through with a heavily distorted, albeit brief guitar solo.Beginning with the backing vocals, “Payin’ for It Now” shifts into a synth sequence that ping-pongs in stereo. Set against unadorned piano, it makes for a dynamic contrast that works with the hard-worn blues tale, told through Walther’s rangy vocals. “I’m Going Out of Your Mind,” besides a clever title and main lyric, features the grooviest, most danceable bass line of the collection, a funky rhodes piano solo, courtesy of Adkins, and a great chorus progression.“Bad Girl” and “Casualty,” while not standouts, are solid tracks that are similar in their straightforward blues approach, excellent vocals and worthy instrumental interludes. “Meet in The Middle,” an upbeat duet, gets some credit for being tonally different than other songs on the album, but unfortunately falls flat. The band’s cover of “Hold On, I’m Comin’” follows, and succeeds as the other risky attempt of the set. Carried by a deep organ hum, a fiery harmonica solo and Briggs’s uniquely sparse drumming, it has just enough variation from the original without being overdone. The country-gospel inspired “Bailey’s Light,” focuses on great vocal arrangements and finishes on a high note.On first listening, The Westerner might appear no better or worse than any other of the many, quality Texas-rock attempts. However, a closer look reveals an album that jumps from traditional blues to country-rock, includes some soul, gospel, and isn’t afraid to try some new, unique instrumental pairings. Zack Walther Band shows ambition and creativity in their songs, and with the exception of one tune, delivers on them all. It’s a set that is serious at times, fun at others, and a great listen overall.

Adam Karch - Crossroad Diaries

 1. The Flame - 4:48
 2. Did you Get The Latest News - 3:25
 3. Just About Broken - 7:00
 4. We Ain't Goin' Home Yet - 4:02
 5. Shrapnel - 4:36
 6. Goodbye - 5:30
 7. Both Happy - 2:45
 8. In Blue - 5:38
 9. Singin' Wind - 4:07
10. Windigo Dance - 2:53
11. One More Night - 3:39

Crossroad Diaries is a middle of the road blues/rock effort that probably would have sounded fresh in, say, 1987. Coming across a bit like the Archangels without the hard edge punch and songwriting talents of Charlie Sexton, Karch's debut album runs through the blues paces on predictable track after track. From the ubiquitous guitar riff on "Did You Get the Latest News" to the Colin James' inspired "Just About Broken," Karch's youth comes off as a hindrance as he struggles to find his own voice and style. This is not to say everything is lost; the kid can definitely make the electric guitar grind (especially on the jazzy "Both Happy" and the shufflin' "Windigo Dance"), and his band-mates weigh in with some great sounding Rhodes/bass/drums. All in all though, the only crossroads this album has seen was probably on the big screen. (Justin Time)

 9. Lies - 3:32
10. The Best Part of Me - 3:28

As a faithful follower of Zack Walther’s career dating back to his Rodger Wilco days, I’m tempted to call his latest release, Into the Fray, the best album of his career. But that wouldn’t be entirely fair to his previous output. You see, Zack is the type of artist that is constantly improving, always striving to get better at his craft. With each new album of his, up to and including this one, you hear an artist that is maturing and growing with each release. Into the Fray is a snapshot into his life right now. With a wife and new baby girl, he’s opening his soul and letting the world take a peak. These songs were road tested with his band for months before they made it to the studio, so they easily capture the spontaneous spirit of their live shows. They follow him effortlessly through a gamut of subject matters: the sleazy ex-manager (“Using My Words”); missing that special someone (“The Longest Night”); we’re all here, let’s party (“Tonight”); let me share the load (“Ease Your Mind”); and a father’s love for his new daughter (“Best Part of Me”). Walther is just one hit away from the brass ring and several songs from this album fall into that category, so hopefully the right people will hear this CD. You might just be that person.
