You’d hardly expect a band from Melbourne in this millenium to share the musical DNA of Southern fried melodic explorers The Black Crowes, but that’s exactly what we have in Dirty York’s latest Feed The Fiction: southern blues rock heavy on the groove and without an AC/DC riff in sight. It’s glorious stuff – Shaun Brown’s vocals have a real Chris Robinson meets Rod Stewart feel to ‘em, Ammiel Warner’s keys lend proceedings a glorious Americana boogie feel, while the rhythm section of Justin Rudge and Brett Wolfenden make the “tight but loose” vibe a near-religious experience. Guitarists Luke Teys (the main songwriter here) and Benny James Pertzel slink together in a telepathically Stonesy way, combining what Keef Richards & Ronnie Woods call “the ancient art of weaving” with snake oil and magic dust so you’re never sure where one starts and the other finishes. Standouts Be Home & Alive could be Neil Young jamming with the The Black Crowes; Speechless is the not-too-distant relative of The Black Crowes’ Remedy; Sweet Sensation could be smacked-up-era Aerosmith; and gloriously, the entire album sounds like it was written while jamming, handing round a jug of moonshine and a few spliffs, and plugging into the electricity of the universe.
