Harmonica virtuoso John O Leary is one of the legends of British blues, and in a career spanning forty years was a founder member of the Savoy Brown Blues Band, who turned British blues into a US stadium rock attraction, as well as playing with the John Dummer Blues Band, Mainsqueeze and a host of touring American bluesmen. For the last decade he has assembled line-ups of the best contemporary blues musicians for his extensive live work and recording and is a fixture at European blues festivals. This 2-CD set comprises the 2004 studio album Sins , previously privately released by John, and a previously unreleased live album recorded at Mr. Kyps club in Poole, Dorset.
O'Leary was simply superb. Bearing down on the reeds with such powerful, precise tone on numbers such as 'Snatch It Back & Hold It' and 'Checking On My Baby', he lifted the performance to a higher level every time he took to the stage... --The Times

New York State band Waydown Wailers are set to release their third album, Backland Blues. They like to call their music ‘Outlaw Jam’, which sounds more like a new variety of Robertsons than the mix of blues, country, pop and, yes, the Grateful Dead approach to guitar structures and soloing they actually convey. What cannot be denied is their ability to fuse these genres into an enjoyable offering that sees them deliver eight original compositions and three covers… a classic Elmore James, a similarly classic Byrds and a surprising version of a Larry Williams hit.
It all starts with a 12-bar blues, fresh from a raucous roadhouse. Back Door Woman Blues doesn’t surprise, but it is a well-crafted rendering of a classic style. The guitars are backed by the Professor on piano and they make a great noise together: the solo follows classic patterns too, but it still ticks all the boxes. I Want Your Soul has an interesting intro as Christian utilizes a B-bender on his guitar. This is a device attached to the guitar that, via a lever, can ‘bend’ the string (usually the B string) by up to a minor 1/3rd. It makes it sound like a pedal-steel slide and gives a lovely tone to all that follows. The solo is neat too as it expands over a great drum pattern. Elmore James’ Done Somebody Wrong gets the full slide treatment as befits a master of the bottleneck. This is well executed and flies across an almost jungle drum sound which takes it away from the original while maintaining credibility. A really strong interpretation of a true classic. Another Bump in the Road sees the band summon up their country influences backed again by Professor Louie on piano. This rolls along at a good pace and benefits from a very Doors like guitar solo. Their jam claims are justified on No Mercy, as the Dead references abound throughout the funky treat which has a great riff and a clever slide/picked duet in the middle: then add a layer of glorious keys from the Prof. and this is clearly the best of a good bunch. The surprise cover comes next… written by Larry Williams in 1958 but probably made most famous by four blokes from Liverpool. Dizzy Miss Lizzy almost works: it is still an enjoyable chunk of rock ‘n’ roll but, for me, it somehow jars with the rest of the album and, when your mind can’t get past Lennon and Harrison it is difficult to appreciate fully. That is forgotten as we get back into a country vein again. Every Passing Mile has twin guitars and vocal harmonies that give this a slightly aggressive feel, rather than the usual country droll and roll, and it’s all the better for that! Back to the Dead allusions on Somewhere in the Middle as we get the rock/country/folk blend they were masters of. Here the folk gives way to rock for the jam feel of the soloing on the outro, with a captivating keyboard…if you listen closely. There is a distinct Dylan feel to the storytelling and the intonation. I’m On the Hunt takes us, happily, into blues with a rock edge. Played in a minor key beloved of many bluesmen, this one works a treat. In fact, it is so familiar, I can hear Alice Cooper’s Blue Turk crossed with his Is It My Body… it is still damn good. The next track, State Of the Union, is a ‘remix’ of the song from their debut album and is a comment on err, the state of the union. It comes across as a bit reggae (the Wailers part perhaps?). It has a hint of CCR or the Outlaws on top of that reggae backing. It does work courtesy of a thoughtful solo but isn’t my favourite. Final track is a cover of The Byrds’ Lover of the Bayou… here it sounds as if Dylan and Knopfler were fronting the band, but the Waydown Wailers do it more than justice. The Hammond solo is a gem too from the venerable Professor Louie.

This is the fourth production project for Charlotte, NC songwriter/producer duo Cagle & Nash Greg Cagle and Rick Nash both grew up in the town of Concord back when it was hip to listen to cats like James Brown and Otis Reading and Wilson Picket. They actually crossed paths for the first time at the young ages of 15 &16 respectively. Back then they called them “basement” bands. Doug & the Soul Review, the Tamrons, Then there were the serious bands like Sugarcreek where both Greg & Rick worked on a couple of different occasions. Sometime along the way Cagle lured Nash to UNC-Charlotte where Cagle went for Theater stuff and Nash was chasing that Music Composition dream
Cagle continued to build his catalog of original material and honing his composing and arranging skills while Nash went on to study studio recording and production under non other than Mark Williams, Engineer on projects of R.E.M, Don Dixon, James Brown fame while pursuing his day gig as Marketing Manager for a B2B manufacturer in the Charlotte area. Cagle and Nash still kept in touch on a close friendship level but were not afforded the opportunity to write and record together again until . . .
Fast-forward to Late December 2007 they got together again to to write and record. In 2009 the first Cagle & Nash titled CD - Soul Complete was released. Two years later this prolific duo is on their fourth release with Red Herring Redux and already have two other projects in the works.

The blues is to be found wherever one goes; not the “state” of the blues, but blues music specifically. In every town regardless of size, there are guitarists playing the blues. Sometimes they make a living at it, but, more often, they could be but chose to keep their hand in while getting on with avoiding the state of the blues, or, to be more specific, making a living and raising a family. And it’s no surprise that among those are many whose abilities are such that they could have made a living, of sorts, as a player, singer and writer, but were not in a position to let life’s responsibilities slide while they played their slide.
London, Ontario, a medium sized city in Canada just may have more blues guitarists per capita than any other municipality above the 49th parallel, and Larry Benoit is recognized as one of the very best of them.
Benoit is one of those who took his responsibilities to his family seriously, and he accepted the role that life had handed him. Yet, he never stopped playing, but also never found the time to put his music down on an album until now.
Titled I’m Your Man, Benoit's CD differs from many of its type simply by presenting original material over the standard blues covers one can find on albums by too many others. All but two of the songs are his own, and all are equal to any other new blues you’re likely to hear this year.
Benoit's talents as a guitarist and singer are, naturally, featured throughout but as proof of the respect due him, his support musicians are all among the very best.
Doug Varty, Jim Corbett and Ed Pranskus are all members of the Jack Richardson London Music Hall of Fame, after a lifetime spent by each making a living from music alone. Others who came out to play with national reputations included Maple Blues Award honouree Chris Murphy; Randy Bachman’s drummer Dale Ann Brendon; nationally respected keys player Lance Anderson and drummer Ted Peacock, and on.
Benoit produced the album himself, with engineering help from Darren Morrison
(Bill Durst’s producer) and Kyle Ashbourne, along with Juno winning producer Dan Brodbeck looking after the mastering of the finished product.
This album is, in fact, not just another disc to be used to get more gigs in more bars. Instead, it is a fine piece of work, guaranteed to please all fans of fine blues music anywhere, and highly likely to make Larry Benoit’s name known well beyond the 519 Area Code, all things being equal. Watch for him on a stage in your town soon.

12. Johnson's Blues - 2:04
13. True Love - 3:46
14. Mean Streets - 6:34
15. Sweet Darlin' - 3:24

Music genre includes Blues, Rock and Country with a touch of Jazz. Strong lyrics complemented by innovative lead guitar, piano and a five piece band.
Archie Clark was born on the wild West Coast of New Zealand's South Island and raised in the legendary coal-mining town of Blackball. He started his musical apprenticeship there, playing on the West Coast with his first band The Blackball Shufflers before moving with his young family to Christchurch to follow music full-time and tour the South Island with blues-rockers The Wrongway Corrigan Band.
Archie continued to play in bands around the Christchurch and the mid-Canterbury area during the 1980s in bands including Streetlife, Stop that Train, Naked by Mistake and Rio & the Hurricane Horn Section. He was also writing songs, but a growing family and a developing career in the telecommunications industry required a move to Wellington and meant that music took a back seat for the next 15 years. A move to Tauranga in The Bay of Plenty in 2005 reignited the flame.
The fifteen tracks on this album are for the most part true stories, half of them written in recent years while travelling through China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, and India, including the title track “50 Days In Asia”. Other songs, such as the iconic blues stomp “Elephant Blues”, date back to those early Christchurch days. Musically the album's vibe is that of accessible mainstream rock with a solid dose of blues and a scattering of country and jazz.
Recorded at Boatshed Studio in Tauranga, in New Zealand's Bay of Plenty, 50 Days In Asia features some of the Bay's premier players and was produced by The Boatshed's Nigel Masters, noted for albums he has made with Shona Laing, Jan Preston, Kokomo, Brilleaux and many other top New Zealand acts.

New rock and roll from America's sacred blues and roots traditions/
I wanted to do a project that honored America’s “sacred roots”/”sacred blues” tradition. On “Myth and Truth,” I marshaled the talents of a dozen or so Chicago-area musicians, styled as the David Danced Collective, to cover songs from that unique canon – or songs derived from or connected to that tradition – and added a couple of my own compositions. I gave them a rock update, with musical elements ranging from country honky-tonk, deep swampy blues, jazz funk, psychedelic rock, even some hip-hop… and an acoustic track made thoroughly and quirkily tasty by a closing clarinet solo and a suitcase harmophone.
We recorded, engineered and mastered the work at Chicago’s Rax Trax studios, with Noam Wallenberg (Alan Parsons, NEEDTOBREATHE, Dee Snider, Bun E. Carlos) as producer. Many of the musicians are veterans of the Chicago independent music scene, delivering first-rate session work to the project. They include frequent Chicago Bluesfest artist Jamiah Rogers; guitarist/keyboardist Packy Lundholm of I Fight Dragons; vocalists Jennifer Hall and CHAR of the popular Steely Dan cover band Deacon Blues; area rapper Melo Tripp, and veteran drummer Larry Beers.

Well, Rob Chapman has stepped up the audio and video quality to a whole new level.
The hammy acting in the video aside (at this level he needs a screenwriter and director), the production is right up with "pro" stuff and he's clearly targeting the big money pool of the US by reinventing himself into a more mainstream dirty blues rock vibe as opposed to the metalhead, T-shirt wearing, short wearing dude niche he has inhabited to date.

Guitar & lead vocals - Rob Chapman

For singer-songwriter and Nimmo Brothers cofront man Stevie Nimmo, song writing isn't something that you plan; it's something that you need to do. Born and raised in Glasgow, Scotland there was always music around as Stevie was growing up. After honing his skills with local bands, Stevie and Brother Alan formed The Nimmo Brothers. The Nimmo Brothers have toured all over the UK, Europe and America for over 15 years, with five successful electric and acoustic CDs to their name. Following a diagnosis of cancer Stevie, now living in France, was forced in 2009 to ease back on his touring schedule with The Nimmo Brothers and spend some months in recovery after a major operation. During this period, focusing on the style of music Stevie listens to 'off the park', he wrote most of the songs that now make up The Wynds of Life.

"When it comes to the blues, Mike Griffin is the real deal. Lots of players claim to be blues musicians, but all it takes is one listen to realize that Griffin not only plays the blues - he LIVES the blues. From his smoky, soulful vocals to his stinging, singing guitar playing, Griffin makes music that penetrates right to the bone with emotion that you can feel as well as hear. It's a sensation that will chill you, thrill you, and full-fill you."
Sittin' Here With Nothing is Griffin's third Waldoxy release, and as the saying goes, "The third times the charm." Recorded at Alabama's legendary Muscle Shoals Sound studio, the album captures Griffin and the band at their best - relaxed, upbeat and burning. Griffin's guitar solos talk as if they were directly linked to his powerful, gruff singing. When it comes to the blues, he can play it all whether it's uptown and jazzy or lowdown and rockin'. For a taste of his versatility, check out his funky rhythm work on "The Last Thing I Need" his melodic, sophisticated solos on "He Can't Do It" and his gritty slide on the album's title track.
Griffin's stellar backup band adds just the right amount of spice and substance to the music. From his gospel-inspired piano licks to his fat, Staxlike organ rhythms, Clayton Ivey turns in a smoking keyboard performance, which is highlighted by his solos on several cuts. Bassist David Hood and drummer Pat O'Connor provide a swinging grooving backbone that propels the songs like a '50 Mercury running on rocket fuel. You'd be hard pressed to find a better horn section than Terry Townsend (trumpet) and Dennis Taylor (sax), whose lively accompaniment adorns several songs with the potent punch of a heavyweight champion. Add guest drummer/percussionist Paul H. Lee and you've got a surefire recipe for 100% blues satisfaction". Chris Gill, Associate Editor, Guitar Player magazine
