Montgomery Gentry’s “Folks Like Us” is an unencumbered, straight-forward, blue collar country jam that recalls some of the duo’s best catalog hits. The rocker will resonate with anyone with a “Get the job done” mentality.
It’s not clear if Ash Bowers, Neal Coty and Adam Craig knew they were penning a MoGent song when they sat down to write “Folks Like Us,” but it’s hard to believe the trio offered it to anyone else first. It’s like giving Michael Jordan a basketball.
There’s a great sense of optimism that many songs reliant on the same blue collar tone miss. “Hard-working” does not always equal bitter or resentful. This song celebrates the soul of America’s workforce without taking aim at those who choose a white collar.
Montgomery Gentry admit they’re giving fans exactly what they want with this song, the second from an upcoming album. That’s not a bad thing, they say. It’s hard to argue the point.
